Title: Now that I own it, it won't stay running!
Post by daedalus on 09/25/08 at 16:26:11

Got the bike home, now it won't go anywhere.  It seems like it isnt getting enough gas to stay running.  After many tries I can get it to run if I give it gas the whole time.  The second I let off the gas, it dies.  There IS gas in it.  Using the choke doesn't seem to help-- not that its that cold yet. The PO removed the baffle from the exhaust and probably made no other adjustments to compensate.  Could this be the problem?  I am planning on reinstalling a factory muffler soon.  The lights all work fine and the starter seems to work--I would consider charging the battery to be sure that's not it if it wasnt so hard to get to!   I'm still waiting for my Clymer to arrive in the mail.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Switch the petcock to PRI. See if it keeps running & report back.

Maybe its something as simple as turning up the idle screw?
Left hand side of the carb, turn the screw in, CW I think.

Did you ride it home or trailer it home?

Trailered it in the back of my truck.

Removing the baffles would make it lean.

Is the plug on the idle mixture screw?

How low are the rpm's?

did you try and turn it up a bit?

Might need fresh gas in the tank, or a carb clean.  seafoam anyone?

I've heard wedding cake can mess things up, too.

possibly the pilot jet could be gummed up. Has the bike been sitting before you got it?

He put 2000 mi on it since January, then bought a bigger bike and let this one sit.  I will try to check some of these suggestions after work.  Of course its supposed to be pouring all day.  Thanks though!

Could be lots of causes. Did the bike start right up and idle well before you trailered it home? Did you go for a test ride of a few miles without any problems?

Poor starting and/or engine dying can come from a number of sources:

1) Crappy fuel. If left for over a month without stabilizers, fuel can degrade, water can condense and phase separate, rust can form and all sorts of things can get varnished up.   The result is a product that my not burn or will plug jets etc.  Best advice for a bike sitting a long time is to dump the tank, inspect the insides carefully for rust and particulate, and then refill it will good old fresh 87 octane. You can also add some Seafoam, STP or Techron to it, which you can find it at most auto parts stores.

2) Idle speed too low. If this is your problem, normally it will start up and run while you give it throttle but die when you lay off throttle. Since you said you were choking it at start we'll rule that out. (Even here in Florida where it rarely drops below 60 degrees, I have to give it some choke in the morning.)  The idle speed screw is on the left hand side.

3) Idle mixture too lean. This can be remedied simply by removing the brass plug and richening the mix.  Even if your problem is bad gas or idle speed, I'd recommend this mod anyway.  Price=free.

It's documented here ;> http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1221818822

4) Poor fuel flow.  The savage has a vacuum petcock and notoriously crappy vac hose. IF the hose is cracked you may not see it and it may work sometimes and then fail other times. Best advice is to buy a 1 foot length of automotive vac line (same ID, thicker OD and get matching clamps).  Lots of info on here about troubleshooting vac petc0ck probs, but if it runs on PRI but not on ON or RES you may have a bad hose or a bad petc0ck.

If you confirm that the petc0ck is working fine, you may have a carb float that is not working right, So even though the fuel flows to it, it cuts off the fuel too soon and your bowl is starved.

If the bowl is filled properly, then you could have gummed up jets.

5) Plugged air filter. Good idea to take it out and clean it anyway. Always remember to blow the air from the clean side near the carb to towards the dirty side where the air comes in.

6) Poor ignition. Spark plug removal and inspection is a good idea. From looking at it and smelling it you can get an idea if it is rich, lean or even if the PO replaced the plug with the wrong one.

Surely there are more things to consider but these should be part of any new bike inspection. The good news is that the Savage is a pretty robust bike and bounces back from moderate abuse very quickly. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

If you don't have your Clymers yet you can Google it and find electronic copies online until your book gets here.

pilot jet may have fell out - happened to my kids awhile back.

That sounds a whole lot like what happened to my bike. Stupid idiot (me) put in a pilot jet and didn't get it tight enough so it fell out. The bike would ONLY run really crappy if I held the throttle open.

Update.  Woohoo!  Finally got it out of the driveway!  Adjusted idle speed.  Will run on PRI .  Slows then dies in ON or Res position.

Cool.....   petcock bad or the hose has a leak/crack.

Inspect the hose real real close for cracks,  or just replace it.

If there is gas in the hose, the diaphram is bad. Remember to cap off the back port and cap off the vacuum port on the carb until you fix it. AND......, PRI is same as RES so watch your mileage close so you don't run out of gas.

I had the exact same problem.  Bought a bike, trucked it home, and it would not run.  After running the battery down (it was weak from sitting), and numerous failed jump start attempts, I finally tried it on PRI.  Runs like a champ, but I have no RES.

Save yourself a lot of future trouble and replace the OEM petcock vac line with thicker-walled automotive vacuum line and beefier clamps anyway. Even if the problem is the diaphragm in your petc0ck, eventually the oem tube will split or may  come loose at the cheesy little clamp.

Here's a pic of the OEM tube compared to the thicker tube I bought at Discount Auto.

Replacing the hoses sounds like a good idea.  Question-- if PRI is the same as RES, that just means it draws gas from the bottom of the tank, right?  So I don't have to worry until I get down to the last 1/3rd of a tank of gas?

True res and prime draw from the bottom of the tank, what ever there will get sucked in.   :o

Make sure you remember to turn it to "on" when you shut off or else...

So I replaced the spark plug and the vac line and that seems to have solved the problem.  Started right up and would run on any petcock setting.  Thank you everyone!  Now I have a new problem!  Will start new thread-- see Broken Clutch Bracket!?
