Title: Motor pics please
Post by mikestrikes on 09/24/08 at 13:12:15

I have been reading alot of the old threads getting info and all but so many of the older ones the pics are gone !

I would really like to see some pics of the combustion chamber, intake and exhaust ports and possibly crank and rod pics.

On motors thats had it rough does the rod bearing wear ? I see it has the needle bearings and not the lead shell type,,, is it the clutch and rings the most common to need work ?

These are the best I have. When I tear down again to replace head gasket, I'll try to remember to get better ones.

Man, I never noticed until now that there is not much room for transmission in there, is there?

I (and probably every other person here) recommend the Photo CD (http://suzukisavage.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=7).

Bought my '01 bike in pieces .  I had to split the case to inspect for flakes of aluminum (fm dead piston).  Special note, in the first & second pictures you can see both halves of the neutral switch.

The inside of the right case half with oil pump.  This is what is behind the Clutch.

The tranny, yes,  a bit old school....

This is great stuff, when I finaly get mine I'll know whats inside and what to expect before hand.

Looks like I will only need to worry about the clutch and piston/rings really. Unless they starved it of oil and messed up the top end.

Now for some head pics, I really want to see the ports !

THANKS guys/gals

now looking at these pictures of the planetary gears it makes me wonder...are the shafts constructed so the gears can be removed?  If that's the case I'd love to see how much it would cost to change 5th gear ratios to be something a little less busy.

Technically, not planetary gears (you need a big geared ring and the satellite gears revolve around the sun)

But yeah that's what I'm talking about.

You know I hadn't thought of that, I wonder...

All the gears in the tranny come out.   Some snap rings hold it together.  Top gear is closest to the output.

In my Tranny pict closest to you is 1st, then 4th, 3rd, 2nd and almost hidden is 5th.

How well does a mod'd Savage pull 2 up ?

I'm asking as I would rather mount up a real trike axle and not an ATV axle, but the trike axle is about 200 pounds with the car wheels.
The ATV with wheels would be like 100 pounds.

I'm not expecting white knuckle speed just a nice day tooling around town but dont want to over tax the motor..

And yes the clutch will be worked on to handle it.

A taller fifth gear!!!!!!!   ;D ;D ;D That would sell like hot cakes.   8-)

Not only would you get lower engine rpm's on the highway,  you would get betted MPG,  and long engine life, not affect the low speed torque that the chain conversion can do, etc,  etc..........  and you don't have to fiddle with the speedo ....

Somewhere, I got a spreadsheet where I figure if you can swap our the 5th gear set for another pair reversed (maybe 3rd) you get the apropriate 5th based on the gear ratios.

Been trying to get a bottom end w/o paying $100 just to get it to me.

When riding two up with my daughter (just over a hundred pounds) and I'm 254 and 6' the FireLizard pulls really well, but I have Lancer's performance cam, a K&N slip in filter and re-jetted carb with Jardine exhaust. Oh, and I have a heavy a$$ Girder front end as well which adds to the weight with a 6 gallon Road King tank. So the FireLizard is a bit heavier than a stock Savage/S40 and she still pulls remarkably well.

Seeing the covers off the sides of the motor made me wonder how much new seals cost?

I sure wish the DR head would fit............... reading about it they have dual plugs, nicer ports.........

new seals or new gaskets???  Seals like the output shaft seal, Gear shifter seal....

I take it you mean gaskets,  The clutch side cover gasket is about $15,  the Generator side gasket is around $9.

did anyone figure anything out about a taller 5th gear?

Title: Re: Motor pics please

I just asked about these pictures today cause I was thinking more about it.

Anyone have pictures of the gears off the shafts?  I was looking at the parts list and it's questionable how easily gears could be switched.

I don't know about swapping gears in the transmission, but the primary gear set on the 4-speed is slightly higher geared. One more tooth on the crankshaft and one less tooth on the tranny input than the 5-speed. I'm thinking a person could get a whole higher gear set (but not too high) and not have to give up their belt drive.
