Title: Kawi 454 wheels
Post by BurnPgh on 09/21/08 at 21:35:45

I noticed today, going through reviews cuz I'm lame, that the 454 ltd has the same wheel size as the savage and is belt drive. Anyone thought of the possibility of cast wheels while retaining the belt? Im intrigued.

Me too! I'd love to put cast on. I know, I know. Purists will deride me for wanting to get away from the spokes. It's not that I don't love the look, it's just that I like the tire change and flat fixing aspect of cast over spoked.

rear axle is the same diameter 17mm

front axle is the same diameter 15mm

If the bolt pattern is the same, I don't know why a cast wheel from chain driven bike couldn't be used. Chain driven Savages use the same bolt pattern rear sprockets from other Suzukis so original rear pulley should fit into same bolt pattern cast wheels. Are you sure LTD454 has the same belt profile, length and pulley so you could use the original belt?

Im pretty certain using the original belt is out of the question. Im wondering if the rear pulley from the savage could be adapted to fit the 454 wheel. If so I think the original belt could be used. The kawi belt looks narrower and I think is shorter.  Im just real interested in cast wheels for the repair/replacement aspect but Id like not to convert to chain if possible. Ive gotten spoiled not having to do anything to the belt.

I took a quick look at the kawa454 forum (online manual)
It looks like the savage pulley may be adapted to the kawa wheel.
would take one to know.   ;D

I'm guessin' that either that the bolt pattern for the savage pulley can either match up in 2 or more holes or new holes can be drilled in the hub to match the pulley.

But if'n all you want is 'mag' wheels, the works been done.  GS450, slight mod to the front disk and I think the rear is a close match.

might just check a 454 forum and see if they have done any chain conversions. and compare part #'s.

the gs450 wheels are ugly as sin. Im going to look into it more. If it's a massive PITA to work the 454 wheels then I'll go the gs450 route. For the gs450 wheels though isnt it necessary to convert to chain? Id really like to retain the belt if I can.

Gonna watch this thread closely. I wouldn't mind the Kawa wheels one bit, if it can be done. Too bad I don't have the $$$ to splurge, or I'd just go for it. Sadly I can't pioneer this one. I too, don't want to convert to chain.

kawa belt
14mm pitch
40mm wide
128 teeth
made by gates

How does this belt compare with ours?

In taking a second look, I don't think it will be easy to adapt our pulley to their hub.  Ours has a 8 spoke pattern, theirs is 6 tabs.  Ours web is on the inside whereas theirs is in the middle.  Haven't a clue whether it'll match up or not.  A precision adapter plate would need to be made.

It's the bolt pattern that matters. Plenty of GS series drum brake wheels should fit your pulley. Axles and spacers are easier to sort out. Also if the LS454 belt profile is 14M then LTD pulley will match and you may have a lot of Kawasaki wheels that could be fitted if they had the same bolt patterns.

Savage belt spec

Bando 133U 14M 40.0

I guess that means 133 teeth, 14mm pitch and 40mm wide

That might mean that the belts are compatible.

And using a Kawa spocket with a Suzi belt might work.

I'd either be looking for just the sprocket or the whole wheel and sprocket if I were looking to do this mod (which I'm not cause I already have a set of ugly wheels).

Think I'm making a payment on one of these today, at least the rear wheel, and the sprocket separately. I'll let you all know how it goes.
Hopefully I can get it back to the owner if it doesn't work.

I am using a mag wheel set from an '83 GS550, 19" front & 16" rear, same brake set up so the Savage brake mechanism slides right in.  Also using the front forks from same model/yr; but it does have a much better front disc setup so stopping power should about double.

I don't suppose the front brake disc from a GS550 could be used on our Savage front wheel?  Would love to have "stopping should be about double" effects from it!

the disk for the whole gs series (well all that I've looked at) mounts with a 6 bolt pattern.

The gs450 has the same disk thickness but different diameter.
The gs650 has a different disk thickness as well.
Quite a few gs's are dual disk.
