Title: Tube to tubeless???
Post by kasper on 09/14/08 at 13:03:02

OK, I just bought some new Metzelers and removed the back tire.  Fought like the devil to get the tire off the wheel and ruined the tub in the process.  Does anyone know if or how to go tubeless?  I hate tubes because of the damage.  Just like now, I have to try and find a tube for the bike.  I will probably just take the tire and wheel in and have the bike shop do it and take in the front tire and let them replace if I can't go tubeless.   :-/

There are places that will add a special coating to the inside of your rims to seal it and supposedly make it capable of running tubeless.  I don't know anyone who has actually done it, so I can't say how well it works.  I recall Paladin posting a place in CA that does this.  I've thought about it but I just keep a couple of spare tubes and a patch kit available.

They wouldn't do it to his rusty rim.

I rode the Savage to Wheel Works, who do the wheel sealing thing, and was told no way.  Seems they need more of a drop center than what we have.  So I went and put tubes inside my Metzelers.

They also want new rims, not a speck of rust as that speck will eventually grow and the seal will fail.

Another question, does it matter what kind of tube?  Does it have to be a Metzeler?  The reason I ask, I already know my local Suzuki dealer won't have Metzelers my size in stock.  I had to order the tires from Bike Bandit.

It's all interchangable.  I used IRC tubes ($9 rear, $10 front) and Kenda rimstrips )$1.50 ea.) from Dennis Kirk.

Good Deal!  The Metzelers are going to be hard to find.  Thanks for all the quick replys.  This is a great forum. Love it!
