Title: WHAT DO YOU USE IT FOR?
Post by alcoa on 09/08/08 at 09:31:13

I got my bike to go to work and give me some fun at the same time. 2007 stock, white, windsheild, saddlebags, drivers backrest, and seat lift. Riding home last week from work at 11pm I must have been lost in riding, I missed my turn to go home! Extra 10 miles ups. love this bike ;D

I use my bike for leisure use and on weekends I ride it to work, about 35 miles round trip.

I ride mine to work...35 miles each way.  I get 70+ miles everyday on my "beastie" :D

I have a 70-mile round trip commute to work, which was the original purpose for getting this bike (gas mileage)...

but,

I ride it just about every evening for at least an additional hour out in the countryside, for the sheer delight and pleasure of it.  My husband and I both got bikes about 3 months ago and we are hooked.  On the weekends, we have been taking longer day trips and now are pondering winter gear.  No WAY these puppies are going in the garage for 3 months.

50 years old before I discovered biking....better late than never.  Had I known how enjoyable / mind-freeing / focusing / relaxing / exciting this would be, I would have done it a long time ago.

And I LOVE my Savage...so much heart. :)
Ride safe,
Amy

I don't have my Savage anymore, but I commute on my Concours (don't use four wheels anymore unless I have too many people or need to carry things too big for me to think it's a good idea to carry on two) unless the roads are covered with ice and snow.

Summer of '04 -- the Camaro was in need of exensive rehabiltation, my attempt to buy my retired company van fell through, I needed transportation.

Wife queried, "Have you considered a motorcycle?"    :o  :D

Was looking for something fun to do and was scouting out motorcycles as I have the license and rode many years ago. Sat on a Savage in the showroom, and it felt just right. Afer 2 weeks of humming & hawing, and getting the wife ok with the idea, took the plunge and got a new Savage. I use it to commute to work, 35 mile round trip, when it isn't poring rain. I will also run errands with it, which is basically any excuse to go for a ride. And, day trips have happened on the weekends when time permits.

The Savage is by far the most funn purchase I have made in a long long time.

Ride my LS 25 miles rt to work and my wife does the same.  She talked me into getting one then we had to have another.  Never knew I was missing so much fun..we ride about everywhere we can rain or shine..unless we have the grand kids...they are too small I would be afraid they would not hang on.

Bought mine a couple years ago to help keep miles off my aging truck. Then I moved to within a mile of work. Now I don't have an "excuse" anymore, I just ride to alleviate the stress of working with the public every day. Rides great, but has trouble turning into the parking lot at work. Only happens on the way TO work, never leaving. Imagine that!!!

So far,
Weekend rides around the back roads here, or on Hwy 101 Sunday mornings when traffic is light. I am new to motorcycles and want to build my skills before I try commuting to work during peak traffic.

A few months ago out of the blue the wife says, " The way gas prices are going you should get a motorcycle".
You could have knocked me over with a feather. Momma didn't raise no fool , within two weeks I happened upon a newly used savage and use it for daily commuting and deliveries and FUN.
Now I think I have the MOD addiction,... somebody stop me please.
Just kidding ;)

I was looking through a local pawn shop a couple of years ago when I passed this rather beat-up and forlorn looking motorcycle. I went to ask it why it was so depressed and it told me that it had been sitting there on the pawn shop floor for over two years and nobody seemed to want it.

I told it, “Well, let me look at you and see what we can do to fix that.” So it rolled out of the cluster of bicycles where I could take a better look at it. It proceeded to tell me that its previous owner was a moron: “Just look at what he did to my tank and foot pegs. He dang near destroyed me because he didn’t know how to ride.”

“Yes, I see that, but buck up son, those things can be fixed.”

“Yes, but the people here in this motorcycle hell won’t even blow the dust off of me every once in a while. My battery is dead, my carb is gunked up, and would you just look at my front tire. It hurts just to stay on it because I have no tread on it any more.”

“I feel for you buddy.” I said to it. “But that too can be fixed.”

“But only if someone would buy me who knows what they are doing.” At this point a small stream of fork oil began seeping down the right fork as it began to cry. “I’m sorry, but this two year old gas in my tank has been giving me digestion problems and no one seems to care about a poor old single cylinder Savage like me.”

I couldn’t take it any more. My heart went out to it and I immediately found an employee of the pawn shop with the intention of giving them a piece of my mind for neglecting this poor little guy, but instead I asked how much, and bought it.

As I loaded it up onto my truck, who thought it was about time I bought him a baby brother the stream of fork oil increased as the bike cried more but this time in happiness. Being careful not to hurt its poor abused tires any more than I had to I strapped it down and brought it home.

I immediately flushed out the gas tank and cleaned the carburetor. Replaced the battery with a brand new one and put on new tires front and rear.

“Aaahhh, that feels so good.” The bike said as I drained the oil and put in two quarts of fresh Quaker State 10w40. “Thank you so much.”

“You are very welcome, do you have a name?”

“My previous owner did not give me one.”

“Then I shall do so. I dub thee The FireLizard.”

“I like it, thank you.” I then straddled the newly dubbed FireLizard, turned the key and pressed the starter button. VVVRRRROOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!!
To this day I have not regretted giving my heart to this remarkable motorcycle. The FireLizard has had it’s problems, but with time I have helped it solve them and I have rewarded it with certain modifications that are pleasing to us both. Such as a Road King tank, girder front end, homemade forward controls, ten inch mini apes, and front bullet turn signals.

We ride together practically every day, from just pleasure rides, to running errands, and when I am working, the FireLizard happily takes me to work and safely home again.

I ride mine every blue moon to work which is 100 mile round trip. I ride at least twice a week for leisure especially when I work from home. I had the typical Romeo and Suziet story where we first met in a stealership and she had me. It was Love at first sit. Before I knew it I had her on the back of my truck taking her home with me. We have been head over handlebars in love with each other every since.

P.S. Very cool story YonuhAdisi

And here I thought it was just me, so in love with my bike.

You folks are the greatest!

P.S. - The other day I asked my husband, if you could only keep one, which would it be - the house (which we built special) or your bike - if you couldn't buy another bike?  We both agreed on the spot:  we'd keep the bikes.   :D

Ride safe,
Amy

i bought mine because it was a deal i couldn't pass up. i have been a lifelong motorcyclist, this is probably my 20th. i don't really like commuting on mine, at 4 in the morning the deer are pretty thick, and so is the fog (i have to ride along the ohio river) but i do commute on it when i can. rode today infact, i also saw alot more deer this morning and the fog wasnt too bad. the ride home is pretty good though, and always gives me something to look forward to. my bikes are pretty much just toys for me, but they get ridden as often as possible.

One of the things I get a grin reading in here is when someone says
" I have owned over 20, or over 30, whatever, Over some tremendous number( to me, anyway, I wish I had owned 20 bikes over the years, how cool would that have been?) of bikes & they, after all those other bikes & all the chances to have a real favorite, they Like this 650. Hutch, who just doesnt come in any more, has had 37( Or thats the number that comes to mind, I Hope thats right) & of course, the Savage ranks very high on his personal opinion of" Best all round bike". Until I talked to him about the Kawasaki W 650 & he looked into it & bought one, the Savage was #1! I am buying his first one & he found another in better shape. I dont intend to let go of the Savage.
It's just too fun to ride.

Bought mine when I started spending monday's wages to get the truck to work the other four days of the week.  Then I got hooked and started riding for the fun of it.

I have determined I'll ride it to work every day there isn't snow or ice on the roads, as long as it'll run when it gets really cold.  Right now I'm making an eighty-mile round trip.  Costs me about seven bucks instead of twenty five.

I just recently saved enough in gas money that the bike has paid for itself.

My 2007 s40 is my first bike, bought it for my daily 20mile round trip work commute.  Great gas milage, fun to ride, and saves wear and tear on my car.

I live in Chicagoland and will continue riding it to work until late October weather permitting.

It is my daily driver. I do a minimum of forty miles a day to work and back. Only problem I have is now that the wife has her license we fight over it. Cant wait for the tax man to show up with the money for another bike.

I read recently that there are two things a wife will never say to her husband.
(1 ) Honey why don't you go out and buy a motor cycle.
(2) Honey I think you should drink a little more.
I guess there is only one thing now.

Sam Avellino in Revere (Mass) was the local and he couldn't get one for 3 months..and at 20 in June, I just couuldn't get with that plan.  say hi for me next time you talk.

I use mine for to-and-from work on any day it's above 35 and not raining.  That's good for about 35 miles a day.

I don't get near enough mental health rides.

I started looking for a bike the first time I spent $100 on the weekly fillup for the truck. I had never even sat on a motorcycle. Happened upon a Savage and then started researching them, and found this site.  I bought an 01 with 2k miles and drive it 45 miles roundtrip whenever it is dry.  I figure I am saving 25 cents a mile in fuel costs, 10 -15 more in depreciation on the truck and making a killing in the fun quotient.

I try not to think about the costs for all the toys and accessories; and the medical costs from the separated shoulder on day 1  :-[

What do I use it for? Just about everything! I go to work on it, about a 60 mile round trip. I go to the store, run errands, etc. The only thing I haven't done yet is take a long trip on it, but that's giong to change. Sorry, I will not take pictures. I'll be going to Lubbock, and frankly, noone should have to see that.

A previous poster had mentioned wanting one once it really started hurting to fill up a truck. I have a F150 I have for work because I am a contractor, and it too was costing me a lot of money to fill up. I am originally from around Chicago, but I came down to W. Lafayette, IN to finish my bachelor's degree and to go visit family and friends costs me a hundred dollars round trip which led to far fewer visits.

I had wanted a motorcycle for years and finally just said I was going to buy one but I didn't want to spend a lot of money. I went to a local motor sports store around my house and I saw it and I thought it would be just perfect and bought it on the spot. This was not too long ago and I bought my S40/Savage brand new. I love the bike, and I love the community that surrounds this bike. The feeling you get after doing a custom modification that is not typically done because of the lack of aftermarket parts so exiting ones for and from other bikes must be modified is so satisfying. A Savage seems to be unique from other bikes because it truly is a bike you make your own because the customizations on each an every bike from every single owner on this page is more or less unique to that individual owner.

I have made a few mods to mine and every time I look at it I think, "That is MY bike"

This is my first motorcycle over 200cc. I bought it new in May from the dealership even though they kept trying to get me to buy a kawasaki vulcan 500. Now I commute almost every day (even sometimes in the rain, but that only happens if it starts raining after I'm already halfway to work) it is above freezing. I wish the summer wasn't ending, winters get pretty brutal here in Fargo and snow removal leaves something to be desired.

got my bike for commuting... but enjoy rides too.  This weekend I'll be going on the longest ride on it (the PA Savage ride).  It will probably only be 300 hundred miles but will leave home at around 9 or 9:30 and go till 4 or so then anonther 45 minute ride home after we eat.

I always said I was going to get my motorcycle endorsement, and finally this past June I took the class and did it!
Originally I planned to just ride on the weekends for fun, but that quickly went by the wayside when I bought my Savage.  Now I ride to work for fun-as much as possible!!! Unfortunately, its only about 35 miles round trip.  I gotta admit though, my lunch breaks are no longer spent eating in the lunch room with a book... I find any excuse to go out, even if it means skipping my lunch and eating quickly at my desk when I return.
I hate the days when its raining (I'm not hardcore) or I have too much stuff to carry (like a work picnic... I decided that it would be too hard to carry the crockpot of bakedbeans on my back!)  I think this winter it will be hard to be confined to my cage, but I try to make sure that i tell her I still love her even though there's a new love in my life!!! :-*
