Title: POP!  NOOOOOOO!!!!
Post by eanon on 09/06/08 at 16:08:51

Well, while removing the clutch cover to see if my cam chain tensioner mod was to long/tight, I broke the Release cam right in half!  DOH!  I was using the release arm as a leverage point and snap!  Wasn't even using much force!  Seeing as how it's not something I can pick up at home depot, anybody got an extra laying around?  :-[ :-[ :-[

part number 23

Makes me wonder if it didnt just die at home instead of on the road. It gets more pressure when the clutch lwever gets pulled than what I can put on by hand, right?

Don't know, but I wasn't using much force at all.  Guess I'll be ordering some parts....

What amazes me is that the Clymers (but then we know how accurate a Clymers can be) actually says to remove the clutch cover, actuate the clutch arm to break the cover free.

It finally hit me as I read this thread again.  That little piece looks just like one of my moulding bits for my router.  I've been in there twice now, and it looked familiar, but I couldn't nail down the reason.

Next time I have my cover off (which I hope isn't until about 10 o'clock next summer) I'm going to look at it more closely.  Maybe they'll be interchangeable.  Router bits are lots cheaper than motorcycle parts.

I think Justin is rubbing off on me. :)

I can see it now. The "Roman Ogee" mod in the tech section.  If the release cam on your cam chain tensioner fails, go to Harbor Freight and get a 12000 rpm carbide tipped Roman Ogee router bit. Part number LS650CCT. Soak it in Mobil 1 for 30 minutes....

Also, don't throw away your broken release cam. Install it in your Porter Cable Plunge router and you'll find it makes a nice decorative edge for a gun rack, lawyers bookcase, or DVD storage cabinet  ;D

It looks like it's only $5.19 from that link - surely you might as well just buy new?

yeah, I'm gonna get a new one.  Was just wondering seeing as how we have quite a few "spare" engines out there.
