Title: Clutch adjutment and Clunk into first
Post by twkenny on 09/05/08 at 15:57:54

How much "clunk" should we have when shifting into first from neutral while stopped? Mine seems to be getting worse....I tried adjusting the clutch cable but think I may have made things worse.
It's an 07 with 9600 miles on it.
Thanks!

It will always clunk

clutch should be adjusted so there's some freeplay in the lever.

pull lighty just enough to take the slack out of the cable.  There should be at least an .12" or 3mm between the lever and the mount.  If you have little hands, you can have more, but make sure you can pull the lever in enough to fully disengage the clutch.  Also check by twisting the handle bars from side to side.  Sometimes the cable get hung up and twisting from side to side will change the setting.

"Clunk" and "click" get louder the more miles you rack up -- it isn't a problem.  It is your transmission finally breaking in good.  You will note your reluctance to go into 5th is going away finally, right?

It does go into 5th easier!

Thank you both for the help.
