Title: Who's runnin a S.E. II slash cut
Post by NewThumperGuy on 09/04/08 at 10:10:44

Hello all, I just got an S.E. II (slash cut) and am curious as to what is required to install on my 97 savage? Do i need to fab a bracket to secure to frame mount or an extension of any kind? I would also like to see if any of you have any opinions on the ideal jets to use with this exhaust and the K&N air filter. Lancers kit arrived in the mail today so I'm ready to go after some feed back from all of you.

Thanks in advance to all who can help me.

Sincerely
NewThumperGuy

I am running a Black Dyna slash cut SE II right now on my bike and it bolted up without an issue, besides getting the new metric bolts for the muffler.... If you can get the old ones off your a better mechanic than me... As far as jets, and were to start.... Look at many of Lancer's posting for guidance, but each bike is it's own "savage." What works on mine in my enviroment may blow yours up..... You will just have to play with it looking for the "sweet spot."

Screaming Eagle is a Harley performance brand.  Depending on which model Harley the muffler was made for , will depend on whether it bolts right up or not.

Many of the Dyna's bolt up.   Some Sportsters require work.   Road King's, Heritage Soft-tail's, Fat Boy's etc etc require work.

Do you know what model SE II you have????

Thanks daweise1 for the info.

T Mack 1, I went in asking for Dyna and he found the pair of Eagle II's just as I mentioned using exhaust off a sporster.
The only #'s on it are on the bracket itself. (80349 00RA)
I can tell you that the bolt size is smaller on the S.E. and the distance between bolts is only about an inch compared to the 2 1/2 - 3 " on the savage stock so I found when I looked closer once I got home.
There are also a pair of rivets that hold in the baffles located behind the slash cut.
Sorry all thats all I can tell you. But from what I can see some sort of fab will need done. Just have to figure out the easiest, most effective way to do so.

Dyna...  should be easy semi-bolt up but some people add a slightly angled pipe to steer the exhaust gases away from the rear brake arm.  Just saw pict's of that posted (bobber thread).  I'm not so sure I like the change in angle in the lines of the exhaust.

The bracket on the muffler should align with one of the factory mount holes.  Since the Dyna is much lighter than the stock, one will work fine.    You will need to get a thin sheet of metal (approx 2"x6") to use at the slide on section. The Dyna is 1 3/4", but the LS650 uses metric pipes so there is a small gap.

I am so glad I found this site and that it is filled with such knowledgable and experienced riders.

T Mack 1... ty ty ty ty... you have been a huge help.

buttgoat1... ty also, very helpfull info.

So avoid exhaust on the rear brake arm??? I did notice when I set the S.E. beside the stock the slash cut did angle upwards a little. I was thinking a bracket with a little twist to level it out. Opinions???

The issue of exhaust on brake is soot/dirt.  Doesn't look pretty.  :-?

If you angle the bracket, you need to angle the inlet to the muffler.  It slides on and doesn't have much play.
I posted some pict's of my SE Clone turn-out.  It gives you a good idea of what I'm talking about.

Thanks again T Mack, your pipe looks similar, mine just doesn't "turn out" like yours. The bracket photo does look the same as mine I'm happy to say. Should have taken a couple photos for everyone to view probably would have made it easier for replies.

I should update my photo's.... I replaced the factory heat sheild with one simialr to what Vtail shows, only a bit longer.  Got two on eBay for $9.99 + S&H.   So no home made thing to attach the OEM H.S.

Finally had the work done! Sounds great!!  ;D Nice and mean in my opinion. It bolted on directly with the single bolt. I still have some backfires so some more adjusting of the mix screw is required. Still a little rich I think.
I think I will have an exhaust extension w/ 10 degree bend made up to eliminate the soot on the rear brake lever as suggested.
Can anyone recommend a new heat sheild for my new pipe??

Amazing the difference the K&N cone filter, jets and exhaust made to the bikes performance. Before I found it fought to reach 135 km/hr, now it still screams for more at 160 km/hr!!!!!!! Wont be trying that again any time soon though!  :o

NewThumperGuy - where do you hale from?

Title: Re: Who's runnin a S.E. II slash cut

I used a sampson 10" for 1 3/4" pipe. It's made well.  I got it cheaper from a private seller who never used it.

I can't remember if the SE muffle has a tapered front and whether this specific shield will work good for you or not.  Others get them from JC Whitney.

Mr. Hyde, I hale from SW Ontario, Canada. My elevation around 250m I believe.

Thanks Jim, I will do some looking around.

I was wondering after a little thinking, will I need a spacer for my exhaust bracket after the addition of the extension w/ 10 degree bend?
Does anyone know of or have any pictures of one of these extensions??

I am also having a problem with my tool cover now. The mechanic took off the top of the battery cover so the K&N would fit. Now the top off the tool cover has no where to clip in so it hangs loose. Is there something I can do to fix this? With a little more force will that top cover go on with the K&N in place??

NewGuy, the extensions are usually made by a muffler shop.  I don't know of anywhere you can buy one.  Shouldn't be more than $10.  I've got one but it's got lots of holes in it.  I was drilling and tapping it to test for various bolts to figure which would work for my custom longshot baffle!

There are a few options for the battery cover but you'll need to do some work.  By work I mean either removing the airbox and moving the battery back, or, leave it all as is and remove some of the middle of the cover and contour it around the filter.  It will still be a snug fit but you should be able to fit it which will then let you put your tool cover back on.  The only thing about this method is that much of the air around the outside of the filter gets impeded by the battery, frame and seat being so close to and cramping the filter.

Thanks for the advice Jim, much appreciated. I plan on taking it to a muffler shop in the near future and have the work done. Did you require a spacer between frame and exhaust brackets after adding the ext. w/ bend??

Apparently I will need to get deeper into the forums and prepare for the complete removal of the airbox, shifting back of the battery, the re-routing of wiring, etc. associated with this.
Any quick tips on this from those who have done it?

From a previous post of mine:

I removed the airbox today and moved the battery box back.  Here's what I did:  I made two simple brackets (don't know if flat pieces qualify as brackets).  They are 1' wide x maybe 3/16" thick steel.  I drilled 3 holes in each.  The brackets extend the base where the battery box mounts.  Essentially the front battery box bolts get moved to the back holes.  The back holes mount to the bracket.  I lengthened a few wires in order to run them in a way to conceal them cleanly.

Simon (Simontuffguy) recently moved his back as well.

I saw them laying around yesterday when I was digging for stuff for tweaking the exhaust butterlfy.  I'll take a look at them and get you the info.  PM me if I don't get it to you by later this evening.

Thx again Jim, you've been a huge help.

I saw something at home that may work but I forgot to bring them in this morn and I saw another one similar at the hardware store while out looking for something to use for my seat raise. Scrubbing down the battery box now, so it will be nice and shiny  8-)

Here's the info you wanted.  My brackets for moving the battery back are 3 1/8" long, 1" wide and 3/16" thick.

THX Jim, found a couple pieces at home about 3/4" wide, 3/16" thick and 7+ " long. I plan to cut them and redrill later today and get them in there. I want to get things put back together so I can make sure the carb adjustments worked and I'm runnin smooth again.

A couple of important details if you do the mod like I posted above.  Two things regarding the bracket on the belt side- you'll need to get a shorter bolt for the front hole and the back, belt side corner will need to be rounded a bit to fit or else the corner of the bracket will hit the frame.  You'll also need to get two slightly longer bolts for the middle holes.  When you put it together to fit you'll see what I mean.

Jim, i remembered reading that in your original post. I'm just about to cut and drill the brackets now. Off to the hardware store after that.
