Title: Cylinder head to cylinder nuts leak
Post by Rommel on 08/31/08 at 15:04:42

Hello all,

Hope you can help me here. I am new, and had the bike  for about 4 months now. As the title says these nuts leak. Upon starting the bike from cold I can see them bubble some oil, and then leak slowly. The oil does not drip all over the place, or hit the ground it just seeps all over the cylinder. If you guys or gals need a picture grab the clymer manual and turn to page 81, half way down to figure 44 and 45. I have tighten them very hard but not to the point of striping.

Question would be: would re-torquing the cylinder head ( lots of work) stop this leak or do I need to buy a new bike? ( j/k )
____------_______-------

Quick background:

1997 LS650 3300 miles, serviced at 2500 when i bought it. Not sure if 600 was done, but not near the 4000 mark yet.

Thanks,

Rommel

Those are only 2 of the 6 bolts that hold the head on.   You will need to tighten the other four.  Which ... I think ... is part of the 600 mile maintainence.

see fig 43 on same page.

OK, that seems fair because I have tighten them already to the max without cracking or striping.

So I will need to start with my carb rebuild and re-torquing of the head bolts and nuts.

Another question is since I have all this dissembled (in do time) anything else I should look at? Because possibly the 600 was not done? What I mean is anything NOT in the manual that you gurus have found out from years of experience with the suzy single?

Thanks,

Rommel

I had that leak too. I took the front nut off, and put a bit of blue loctite on the bolt and put the nut back on. It doesn't leak anymore.

Noticed mine weeping a little recently too.  Thanks, I'll try it.
