Title: Replacement Carb Screws
Post by Mattdw on 08/29/08 at 12:00:32

Where can I get some stainless hex, or 'normal' philips/flat head screws to replace top and bottom? I looked at Home Depot and Lowes. Did I look in the wrong spots?

Home Depot has it, hardware aile, in drawers.

Ace Hardware also has a good selection and somebody to open the drawer for you.

Recommend allen socket head screws.

Some Home Depots only sell limited varieties of that stuff and pre-bagged at that.  Sears has these Paint/Hardware stores that sell the allen bolts, etc., individually.  I just opened my carb a couple of weeks ago and really butcered the tops of the screws, of course, and want to replace them.  Does anyone know the exact size??  I have been putting off removing a screw and making the trip via truck.

Shadow,

I don't know the size offhand, but you can prevent such predicaments in the future by getting a metric thread gauge.  I'll bet one of those gauges is cheaper than the gas you'll use getting that part in your truck.

ACE is the place; and for the little screws inside the carb, try a hobby shop that sells RC boats, cars, and aircraft.

I just replaced all 8 bolts -top and bottom. They are all 5M x .80 Pitch. I believe the top ones are 8mm long and the bottom ones are 12mm long. I took one of each in so I would get the closest match. I bought 4 5M lock washers for the bottom bolts because the originals had them.

Everthing was stainless steel. I got them all at this "Super" Ace about four miles from me. I call it "Super" because it is huge! I went to another Ace that was closer and smaller but they didn't have any stainless steel, metric, allen head bolts. >:( The allen head bolts look 20x better and are a lot easier to take on and off.

It was well worth it. I have been tuning my carburetor and it was so much easier. Now all I need to do is remove the air box, move the the battery farther to the rear, and fabricate a mount to keep the carb from jiggling too much. Once all that is done the carb will be easy as pie to get in and out and I won't need to remove the seat or nothing.

Once I get to above mentioned mod, I will post pics but until then you all can dream about it. I will also get pics of the allen head bolts shortly.

Ride Hard! :)

The books are a lot better than either movie.  (my opinion.. the books are better than the original radio shows as well)
