Title: Muffler Recommendations Post by flcruzr on 08/28/08 at 19:54:26 I'm interested in adding a muffler to my bike and would like your opinions. I would like a direct replacement muffler so I'm considering the Jardine, Supertrapp or Mac. What do you guys recommend? Which one is cheaper??? Which one gives a good sound, not too overbearing. I've heard the sound clips and I seem to like both Jardine and Supertrapp, so looking for your personal thoughts. Thanks in advance! |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 08/28/08 at 20:07:17 One thing I recommend is that you ask Jardine if their product is currently available or on backorder. Two months I'm waiting now for my slip-on from them. 4 weeks ago they finally located my order and told me "Oh, that's back ordered right now. Should be 2-3 weeks and we'll get it out to you." I'll be installing it in the snow if it doesn't get here soon. I'm looking forward to it, and think it'll be a great modification to the bike, but I'm discouraged by the way they've handled my order. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by mick on 08/29/08 at 00:26:47 I have a Jardene slash cut drag muffler ,very pretty to look at but very noisy,I added a baffle plate in inch in from the end,you will need a welder to do this mod. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by seviersavage on 08/29/08 at 07:06:03 I bought my bike used with a jardine in place. It was a little too loud for me so I found a harley dyna drop off and like it much better. The jardine when I took it off was open all the way thru, unbaffled. I don't know if the PO modified it but the harley dyna is baffled but not as restrictive as a stock muffler. I think you need a certain amount of backpressure to run good. Anyway I listed the jardine in marketplace, looks nice but it's loud. Seviersavage |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by flcruzr on 08/29/08 at 08:27:52 I keep reading about the Jardine being very LOUD, has anyone compared the Jardine vs the Supertrapp? I'm looking for a nice semi-loud rumble, just enough to make it sound a bit tough. I'm being very carefull in selecting the right muffler because I want it to be right. Thanks again everyone for your input. |

Do you like the sound of your MAC? Is it a deep/tough sound or just a bit louder than original??? |

Sorry to hear that Sandy! This happened to me with a car part I ordered and it sucks to wait around. Hope you get it soon so you can enjoy the muffler before winter arrives. I too just saw that Dennis Kirk has two pipes in stock, I was thinking of getting one, i'm just unsure of what to get right now. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/29/08 at 11:06:19 I only have experience with the Supertrapp. It's loud compared to stock, but I hear H/D's all the time that are louder. It's not obnoxious & can be ridden so it's quiet enough to roll thru a Hospital Zone & not be afraid of disturbing the sick folks. All it takes is gentle action on the throttle. Nail it & it growls & goes. Quickly slowing, dropping thru the gears, it makes the grumbling, rumbling sounds of a hot rod, with the occasional backfire, none are shotgun type, just rumbling & occasional popping. I think it sounds very nice. I dont get people glaring at me at red lights, like I would expect if it was just a nasty sounding thing. Ohh yea, I am running 14 disks on the TRapp. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by verslagen1 on 08/29/08 at 11:30:57 I second Justin's experience, 8 disks (more or less), stock air filter, 150 main. Can converse at idle, or not while checking the throttle cable play. Loud enough to be heard at speed, 8-) (important when not seen) soft enough to hear a HD straight pipe coming from behind you. :o (also very important when passing cemetaries so as to not wake the dead) |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by gazoo07 on 08/29/08 at 14:02:34 I also have a supertrapp and I highly recommend it. You dont even have to rejet it but to reach its full power potential you eventually will probably want to. Until then just run with 4 to 6 discs and you can run 8 to 14 after you rejet for more power. Check out this link to read about it and check out the dyno graphs to see how the jardine compares. http://www.thumperpage.com/articles/ls650exh.html And if you decide its not loud enough you just run the open end cap http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=&store=Main&catId=403&productId=p44311&leafCatId=40305&mmyId= (after you rejet) Gazoo www.lubedealer.com/1lube |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by Crotchrocket on 08/29/08 at 14:24:16 Jardine customer here too. I got mine new off eBay for about 100 bucks. Slipped right on, no mods necessary. {{Just FYI, Jardine carbon slip-ons for my RC51 run about 700 bucks.}} Quiet idle, but the volume goes up significantly with throttle usage. From a low speed gurgle to full on Blat Blat Blat.I don't care for loud pipes myself, but I'm happy with the Jardines. I can be loud if I wanna, or ride carefully and be satisfied with the noise level. One last thing, I didn't make any mods to the bike. Stock jetting and so forth. The engine didn't seem to mind at all-no blueing and just occasional backfires. And I like hearing the engine making farts, pops, and the occasional loud snap. Look on eBay and good luck! Crotch |

"License and registration please. Do you know why I pulled you over?" {I'm running an open exhaust rattling windows in the next county. You think I'm stupid? Of course I know!} "No officer." He then said something about running a stop sign which rocked me "Say what? What stop sign? Where?" Short story, he lets me go with a warning, goes back and sits in his car. Behind me. With my open exhaust pointed at him. He is waiting for me to leave. Start the car without giving it any gas. Idling. pop pop pop.... First gear, feather the clutch, 1/10 throttle, pop pop pop, shift to second, pop pop pop..... Yeah, you can be quiet if you try. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by Rockin_John on 08/29/08 at 17:07:31 I've had several pipes, but on your list only the Supertrapp... Only one: a SE turnout look-alike with almost no baffle was too loud. The stock Sporty and Dyna are alright, but the Supertrapp is my favorite sounding pipe. (Not favorite looking though). Here's comparison of the Dyna (quietest); Sporty (a bit louder and more rumble); and the Supertrapp with a half dozen discs (just loud enough without being obnoxious): http://catoosatrading.com/sounds/savages_wip.mp3 |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by ed daugherty on 08/29/08 at 17:58:02 I went to the harley shop and purchased an exhaust for a road king for $25 and it sounds nice! it's a deep soft sound until you get on the throttle and it opens up and sounds real good. it didn't mount up properly but i made it work and I love it!!! |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by flcruzr on 08/29/08 at 18:37:52 Wow! You guys are Great! Thank You for taking the time to post your opinions! I did like how the Supertrapp sounds from the sound clips and now i'm leaning towards the trapp. Where can I purchase a Trapp from, I cant seem to locate them? How much am I looking at spending for a Trapp? Thanks again everyone, I appreciate your thoughts. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/29/08 at 20:01:29 Cant remember where I got mine, but, I would suggest you go ahead & buy the "6 Pack" of disks to avoid paying the freight on it later. That first pound for freight is a killer. |

I like the sound of the Supertrapp as well. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/30/08 at 05:24:38 Some have found it necessary to shorten the header to get the TRapp on far enough to line up the rear mount. IF you have to do that, be aware that if you use a grinder, sparks flying near the battery vent CAN ignite the hydrogen gas, drastically shortening the battery life. Okay, ending it immediately. You may wonder "How DOES this guy KNow this". Well, right after I installed the TRapp, I ordered & installed a Big Crank battery & had to clean corrosion causing crud for hours. Dont do what I did, its a bummer. |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by flcruzr on 08/30/08 at 09:37:20 Thanks Justin, if I decide on the Trapp I will remember that. Ess: thanks for the link, I went ahead and submitted my email for an alert on the Trapp. Do you guys think the Trapp is worth the extra money over the Jardine? |

Title: Re: Muffler Recommendations Post by EssForty on 08/30/08 at 10:11:31 Depends on your motivation for buying one over the other. If it's performance, some guy claims a 23% improvement in HP over the stock muffler. Here's his story: http://www.thumperpage.com/articles/ls650exh.html Not sure what the Jardine offers. If you have to rejet your carb for the Jardine (likely), then you'll add the cost and your time to the equation. If it's acoustics alone then it comes down to the value you put on sound and your personal choice. If you're married, then maybe I should remind you that the term "personal choice" means the maximum noise level your wife can tolerate. ;) |
