Title: 'Mystery' hoses on carburetor
Post by Mattdw on 08/25/08 at 21:54:18

While removing my carburetor I noticed 2 'mystery' hoses on the back side of the carb (side toward the rear of the cycle). Neither was connected to anything so I'm assuming they are breather hoses?
The weird thing is that the end of one of them was flared, as if it was at one time connected to a fitting somewhere, but is no longer.

Any observations or info would be greatly appreciated.

Those 2 hoses (symmetrical about the centerline) are bowl vent tubes.

Usually they're routed up into the opening in the frame just above the carb.  I suppose, if your bike flipped over, the gas would run up into the frame instead of up your nose.

Read Savage Wahine's wonderful carb cleaning post, things will become less mysterious.

They're there to relieve vapor pressure caused by gas evaporating from the float bowl. Not so mysterious afterall.

Kinda what I figured, I was just confused because the end of one of them was flared.

I came across one when I broke down, didn't know what it was for. Looked for where it may have been attached, but saw nothing.
Looked at a few carb diagrams, the only reference I saw was the California model had a hose to nowhere. Now we know.
