Title: Packing my daily luggage.
Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 08/23/08 at 19:25:31

I've been asked to post photos of my bags and the loading onto the bike thereof.  It wasn't until I got inside and looked at the pictures that I realized how grouchy I looked while staring into the sun.  My usual cherub-like demeanor is not evidenced by these photos, but the photographer had gone to see her grandma by the time I knew that.

The photos speak for themselves, I think.  If there are any questions, feel free to ask.  It takes about one minute or less to load the bags.  It takes less than that to remove them.

Nice setup Sandy, looks real solid. Thanks for sharing. Hey, what's the contraption inside your saddlebags that allows you to do without the bolt-on thingys?

I took two diamond plate aluminum front mud flaps.  I don't know what you call them exactly.  They go behind the front tire on a pickup to keep mud off your running boards.  Anyway, I just increased the bend in each one until they made an A-frame that fit the pillion pad, with a substantial overlap of the two pieces on top.  Then I drilled four holes and used carriage bolts to bolt them together.  Ran the bolts through the grommets on the saddlebag strap as well.  I punched four holes in the back of each bag and drilled corresponding holes in each plate, then laced the bags down with parachute cord.  The cooler holds the whole works on the seat once it is bungied down.

it's a downright shame that you have to live in such an ugly place.

Thank you.  It's probably not as streamlined as some of the factory supports you can buy, but I really like being able to just slip the whole works off the bike.  Makes unloading, and especially washing, the bike much less of a hassle.  It's nice to be able to pack the bags while they stand in the same positon they will ride as well.  When I take a trip, I can get all packed in the living room and then just throw everything on the bike at once.

If there is interest in copying the support, I could take it apart and shoot some pictures.  It's really pretty simple, though.  Once you have the two pieces in hand, it becomes obvious how they can be made to fit together.
