Title: Starter "Delay"
Post by twkenny on 08/22/08 at 12:29:06

When I push the starter button, there is a slight delay before the starter is activated. Less that 1/2 a second or so.....
Is this normal? It has done it since i got it and does not seem to vary at all.
Thanks

Don't know if it's normal or not, mine starts right up. As long as your not having any real problems with it, I'd stick to the old saying  "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I prefer if it's not a problem or hazard, don't fix it.  ;D

The former logic cost me a couple of parts, a door included, (and a rear bumper) on my old Jeep.

I do believe it is normal, that half second before the starter engages is when the decomp activates so it is easier for the starter to spin the engine.

You're rather observant.
What he said.   It's a thunk-spin with a delay I'd say is between .1 and .3 seconds.

"If it isn't broke, don't fix it." -- but don't skip preventative maintanance.

Yes its normal, my 2007 does the same thing.  No worries.

Should have added that it's an 06.

Thanks for the replies!

I love this bike....what I thought were engine noises turned out to be the speedo housing vibrating a bit.....bad squaek turned out to be a slightly mis-aligned belt.

Sounds like you are learning the little idiosyncrasies of our beloved Savage.  :)

It's the Suzuki Savage Squeek, rattle, and roll. I have an `08 and it has most of those squeeks and rattles. You clean up what you can and live with the rest. It would not be the same ride if didn`t do this.  The backfires can be entertaining too.
You will also notice when you hit the start button, the bike kills the lights to help save the battery.

On the newer bike.....  Not on my 2001....  :(

As for the delay... that is 100% normal.  There is a timer circuit that triggers the Decompression sloenooid first, then the starter.  The fraction of a second delay allows the mechcanical parts time to engage.

Aaaaaa...... I didn't see anything written saying you heard the solenoid engage...... I hope you hear the clunk (or maybe it is better described as a clack....)

Oh yeah, I hear the clack!

She got new brake pads today.....maybe one less squeak!

Thanks for all of the replies!
