Title: How do you find your model letter?
Post by Deja-Vu on 08/20/08 at 19:13:47

I have been looking for OEM parts online for my ls650 but they keep wanting my model letter like K/L/M/N/ or P were do you look on the bike to find it?

Plus the cheapest online sight I found is here babbittsonline.com is there any cheaper OEM sight?

On the VIN plate on my two, it says "LS650" followed by a silver box.  In that box on the '87 is an "H" and on the '88 a "J".  Kay's 2005 has the same LS650 with no letter designation after it.  Don't know if that helps.  I thought mine was a "P" for pullback handlebars until you asked and I went looking.  Maybe it is, and I'm just confusing matters.

I got a 1986 and that letter is a G, but I called A dealer to check prices and when he asked me I told him it was a G and he said they are all G's and that wasn't it.

What part are you trying to buy? If its an oil filter, tell him to hand you the flippin thing & knock off the BS, cuz they are all the same. There are differences in transmissions & electrical stuff, cam chain tensioner, but mostly, they are all the same.

( except Mine, its faster, better looking, runs 110 in 3rd & gets 90 MPG,, so there)

OHH Yea, & the brakes dont squeal & tires never wear out. I knew I was forgetting something.

It's funny that you started on an oil filter in that little fantasy, Justin. :)  I sent Kay to the dealer the other day to buy a pair of them.  I told her it would be the same filter, to quit worrying about having all the right info to give the guy.  She came home with the filters, alright, but the guy wouldn't be convinced by her say-so.  He had to look it up to be sure it was the same one for the '87 and the '05.

This is a Suzuki dealership.  The only bike they are sold out of that I can see is the Savage.  There's lots of big ol' tanks parked on the floor, but no Savages.  Wouldn't you think they'd get to know the bike a little if they sell that well?

I bought an oil filter the other day at a local bike dealer and he was arguing with me that the spin-on suzuki filter he was trying to sell me was the right one. Took a few minutes to convince him to look it up because I knew it was a cartridge. Once corrected, he then blamed the new naming scheme that Suzuki had started using. Had I said LS650 apparently he would've gotten it right....*sigh*

One has to wonder how many did they order?

I don't know where they get the model either, but my bill of sale says LS650 K8. I needed a new mirror and had to choose between K7 & K8. I don't see it on the bike anywhere.

Had a similar experience with my local stealership. They finally got the filters (and a spare set of o rings).

Funny I asked the sales guy if they had anj S40's but he said they didn't and they didn't expect to sell them as most people want more power!

I got plenty of power, my 200lbs, my wifes 130lbs, and food and drink for the drive in... had no problems getting to 80MPH with a stock bike. I think if more people knew what could be had in the savage, the stealership would have a line of them, just like my local Toyota dealer's got a front row lined up with like 20 Yaris'.

The NADA web-site has a fairly nice listing of the model numbers.
(National Automotive Dealer Assn.)
http://www.nadaguides.com

There is a letter inserted in the "Savage" model numbers to indicate Pull-back (P) or flat (F or L).  There is a K inserted in the 2001 and later models.

Adding to Verlagen's Year list:
1986 = G  .... LS650FG/PG SAVAGE
1987 = H  .... LS650LH/PH SAVAGE
1988 = J  .... LS650PG SAVAGE
1989 = K  .... not offered in USA
1990 = L  .... not offered in USA
1991 = M  .... not offered in USA
1992 = N  .... not offered in USA
1993 = P  .... not offered in USA
1994 = R  .... not offered in USA
1995 = S  .... LS650PS SAVAGE
1996 = T  .... LS650PT SAVAGE
1997 = V  .... LS650PV SAVAGE
1998 = W  .... LS650W SAVAGE  (Not sure why there's no P, possible omission at NADA site)
1999 = X  .... LS650PX SAVAGE
2000 = Y  .... LS650PY SAVAGE
2001 = 1  .... LS650PK1 SAVAGE
2002 = 2  .... LS650PK2 SAVAGE
2003 = 3  .... LS650PK3 SAVAGE
2004 = 4  .... LS650PK4 SAVAGE
2005 = 5  .... S40 BOULEVARD    (Not sure why there's no K5)
2006 = 6  .... S40K6 BOULEVARD
2007 = 7  .... S40K7 BOULEVARD
2008 = 8  .... S40K8 BOULEVARD
2009 = 9      Got  to wait.... have patience.... :D
2010 = A      Got  to wait.... have patience.... :D
