Title: What octane gas do you run in your Savage?
Post by MickeyX on 08/16/08 at 11:15:00

I have an '86 and I have been running 87 octane in my bike since I got it this spring. What are the rest of you running and why? I'm wondering if I should be running a higher grade.

Thanks

I have an 06 S40 and all I run is 87 Octane in it. So far so good.

chronic high octane use tends to load low comp engines with carbon. In high temp, running high test is okay.

I was going to hit the "Add a  poll" button, but, the only two answers I know of are:

- 87 Octane.
- The wrong octane.

What I've read here and in the MOM is that these low compession, long stroke, air cooled engines would not perform well with higher octane. So 87 is what I use.
Also, in my area, there is no 100% gasoline - I can only buy "up to 10%" ethanol. Since I dont have a choice that's what I burn. I wonder if this is slowly destroying my machine from the inside - ya know, like cholesterol, or char-grilled meats? I also eat cholesterol rich charred meats, because, um, I dont have a choice  ;)

87 Octane with 10% crapanol because I can't find any gas without it.

I even stumbled into some 85.5 octane a couple of weeks ago and ran a tank of that through the bike.  It ran just fine, and got the same mileage as when running on 87.

Next I'm going to try straight water.  In Kay's bike. :)

What ever is cheapest price wise.

Mine runs great on 85.  It has never pinged.

I've have no problems with using the 87. I was told by a guy I work with, who works on his own bikes all the time, that I should be using higher octane gas. I had never heard that before. I guess if the engine was pretty worn and needed the extra, then I would consider it but it has less than 19,000 miles on it.

Thanks for the replies.

If you write to Chervon, Mobil or any other of the oil producers who market gasoline, they will tell you that using hi-octane in an engine who's compression ratio does not require it, results in nothing other than wasting your $.  If the engine is not designed to use the octane, it won't do anything with it.  As far as the engine is concerned, the extra octane does not exist.  Nothing is left behind in the engine, there is no residual after-effect.

If the engine is running hot as can be the case in an air-cooled motorcycle engine that is sitting idling for too long on a really hot day; or on summer desert crossings; combustion chamber temperatures will also rise and the low octane gas you are using may not be enough under these conditions to avoid pre-ignition or dieseling.  Some of this site's members use high octane under these conditions.

Another reason to use high octane regardless of compression ratio is that some gasoline brands add a better detergent package to their premium brands, and this helps keep your engine even cleaner.

You can verify this easily by writing to the gasoline companies.
