Title: What's the Best DIAGNOSTIC Tach for Our Bikes?
Post by Digger on 08/11/08 at 21:22:15

I'm not interested in mounting a tach on my Savage (see signature).  I would, however, like to own a tach that I could use to spot check RPMs.  I realize I need to get one that is set up for a two-stroke engine.

What diagnostic tachs are out there that work good for our bikes?

TIA!

don't know what best means - the tinytach is cheap and very easy to use - induction through the plugwire - 3-5year battery then just toss it - reacts a little slow 1 screen update per second I think.

ENM  PT15B2 for over a year now, slow, updates every second, but works well, about $25

www.amickssuperstore.com/      type in ENM PT15B2 in their search spot $27.99 + freight ;)  wrap one wire around the sparkplug wire a few times, other wire to ground. I've got a 186.1 hrs on mine now :)

Love the idea but the site says its for a 2 stroke engine. Is there a way to set it for 4 or 2 stroke?

It works just fine on our waste spark engine as they spark every revolution like a 2 stroke, just noting there to burn on the top of the exhaust stroke normally. Max

If my engine is turning over at recommended idle, what should the speedo be saying in first gear, at idle. rolling on flat ground? Or 2nd might be better, if it will do it & not Buck & jerk.

Given that the 6500 redline is at 35mph in 1st, 1000-1200 rpm would be 6mph, give or take a 0.5. Of course this depends on what gearbox you have, chain conversion, tire size, speedometer calibration, plus the engine would still be doing work even on flat ground from rolling resistance.  Not exactly "the Best DIAGNOSTIC Tach for Our Bikes".  ;D  Easier to record the sound of the exhaust and throw it in a audio editing program that shows the waveform: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1204154431/17#17

I wonder if you could adapt one of the digital bicycle speedometers as a tach.  Snip off the sensor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall-effect_switch) and put something that closes the circuit when it detects the charge in the spark wire.  ...I guess that's what the ENM does already.  :D

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't try this on an LS650.

Why?? ........ at idle, the RPM is with no load.  But, moving in 1st or 2nd gear means there IS a load, which means your RPM would probably drop into the 800 or 900 range (maybe less).  that means the oil pressure would drop to the 1-2 PSIG range (or less)....

Already replaced a head for bad cam journal from the PO.

It will buck and jerk at anything under 1800, maybe a little lower, even when decellerating to a stop.

I like it. I just received the tach from Amicks and the Sigma is on its way. May I ask how you mounted/attached the tach (adhesive?) and how you routed the wires? I can't tell from the posted photo. It looks very professional and I want to make sure mine lasts until the battery gives up!  8-)  Thanks!

Ess,

I, also, just received the tach from Amicks.  It did not come with any instructions or documentation.  Did yours?

TIA!

My old garage sale Snap-on inductive tach works on the 2-cycle position, however the spark plug door must be off so the inductive clamp will fit the wire. I can also use it with the IV drip gasoline bottle when the tank is off. I also have a wand fly swatter type tach I think I got from Northern tool that has a pickup you just get near the plug wire. There are shop type use not permanent. Max

Digger:

I did get a very basic tech data sheet, and a dimensioned drawing, but no real installation instructions. I have it working now and it is great. Here's what I did.

Fortunately, the wiring is really simple. I placed the LCD unit on the left side handlebars at the mirror mount. Just run the positive lead down along the existing wiring harness to the spark plug wire, give it about 3-5 tight wraps around the outside of the plug wire, and then wrap electrical tape around the wraps to hold it tight. Take the other wire and run it to the battery negative or some convenient ground point.

Sounds easy, but it's the access that is a pain. I first tried to see if I could get a couple good wraps on the plug wire by reaching under the gas tank with my skinny fingers. Then I pulled the plug wire out and of course I was able to wrap it nicely, but then I could not get the darn plug wire re-seated on the spark plug.  So I took off the seat, gas tank..you know the drill.

Anyway, this allowed me to do a better job of running the wires.  Soon as I had it all back together it fired right up and worked like a charm.  I have it taped in place as I have not decided how I will permanently attach it to the handlebars.

Incidentally, I went for a one hour ride in an area you probably know very well. Headed up to Titusville, thru the KSC complex area, past the Astronaut Hall of fame, the VAB,  back thru Merritt Island, then US1 back to Melbourne.

Good luck with the install. Worth every penny of the $25 to have accurate RPMs and an hour meter.  8-)

Ess,

I appreciate the info.  I did not plan to install the tach on the bike, but I may have to if access to the plug wire is that much of a pain.

We'll see.....

Yep, I've done a little time at The Cape.  Left there in a real hurry once!

Ride safe, good luck with the oncoming storm (that is a part of southern living I don't miss)!

Digger:

Your best access for a temporary rig would be from under the front of the gas tank. There is enough play in the wire to get a few wraps of the positive around it, and then you could just twist the leading and tailing ends to hold it on for a few minutes while you take readings. Try it before you pull off the seat & tank. I wanted a permanent solution and I needed tight wraps and lots of electrical tape  so I had to go the more complex route.

Ess,

Yep, I saw that, thanks!

My plan is to get the sensor wire in place, ride the bike to warm it up, then hook up the tach unit to properly (for once) set the idle speed.

Cheers!

Tach is velcro'd to a T shaped piece of aluminum which is boltes under the mirror cinch nut. The Sigma is also velcro'd on top of the suzuki emblem on the top trippleclamp. I feel the velcro mounting reduces vibration dammage to the units. Ground on the tach is one of my windscreen bolts. Pick up for the Sigma is popriveted on a L shaped piece of aluminum (See Pict). Magnets are from Radioshack (earthmagnets, (2) on top of each other) and are NOT glued. Visible just under the mount.        http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2007/11/07/bikepics-1080772-full.jpg
