Title: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Kirk on 08/10/08 at 18:09:02 Guys, & Gals; I just stopped off and bought one of those Schwinn 12 function computers made for bicycles. I have seen where some of you have used it on the 650. The manual that came with the speedometer isnt very clear I was wondering if anyone knows what the front tire size of our bike is in millimeters? According to the booklet you need to input the tires diameter in millimeters. I still have the stock 100/90-19 IRC. Also any other installation tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 08/10/08 at 18:14:17 I'm using one of those. I wish I could find the little book for it. It seems like I entered 26.5 inches. That was months ago though. There was a chart that converted inches to mm included with it. Believe it or not, I just held a tape measure up to the thing and eyeballed it. That got me within .003 mile. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Skid Mark on 08/10/08 at 18:24:06 The conversion rate is: 1 inch = 25.24mm Sandy is right when he says you don't need to be spot on. You can calibrate the number after you run the unit and compare the speed readout to a known speed. I did mine to the bike speedometer because it was quick and easy. The next time I come across some hiway mile markers (Rare here north of the 49th) I'll recalibrate to that and have a more accurate readout. Be sure to attach the sender securely as it is mounted close the the front wheel. Any failures there will have dire consequences. Search the posts for install info. There's oodles of great ideas. That's how I figured out how to do mine. It is a very worthwhile exercise. |

Usually it's 1" = 25.4mm here in the states. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Kirk on 08/10/08 at 18:26:56 I will give that a shot as well. Thanks Sandy you are awesome!!! |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Skid Mark on 08/10/08 at 18:44:00 Good catch Verslagen. It is the same up here too. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Kirk on 08/10/08 at 18:50:49 Thanks for your feedback Skidmark and Verslagen. I cant wait to give the new speedometer a try. I get tired of having to look down while driving. Forgot to mention I almost got side swiped today by a lady not paying attention! That seems to be the norm for me here in Atlanta the cagers always seem to veer over into the left hand lane just as I am about to pass them. I am going to find out if it is legal to shoot out a tire or two here when someone puts your life in danger. >:( Sorry got a little off the topic but I was p*ssed off about it because it only takes one mistake from those morons to make someone else suffer. |

GS-18s tires are original equipment on the Suzuki LS650, selected because of their great overall performance and competitive pricing. GS-18 : FRONT 100/90-19 M/C 57H WT 667 97 2.50 2.15 GS-18 : REAR 140/80-15 M/C 67H WT 612 128 MT3.50 MT3.00 IRC says your front tire should be 667mm diameter. (7mm shorter than my Metezler.) |

Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Kirk on 08/15/08 at 14:15:18 Well I finally received my square magnet from magnet man and installed it along with my schwinn speedo. WOW what a difference it has made! I no longer have to take my eyes completely off the road to see what my speed is. It is almost dead on with my original speedometer. I used the 26.5 conversion to 2117mm and it works like a charm. The only thing I find a little annoying is that if you gun the throttle it takes the computer a couple seconds to catch up with the speedy thumpers acceleration. All and All I would highly recommend this mod to anyone looking to be alittle safer on the road. http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008/08/20/bikepics-1391547-800.jpg http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2008/08/20/bikepics-1391546-800.jpg |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Kirk on 08/20/08 at 10:52:57 I forgot to snap a photo of the magnet on the rim but thats where it is I used liquid nails to help make sure it doesnt move and I mounted the transmitter right under the fender between the two bolts. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by WebsterMark on 08/20/08 at 13:04:27 I put on a Sigma 800 model after reading a few other sites about it. Installation was easy and like you said, it is super accurate. I put mine on the right side and ran the wire down the front brake cable. One nice feature is you can see your speed or time without looking down at your tank. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by leeran on 08/20/08 at 13:57:13 Good idea. I am looking for a speedo to put on my other bike. Do you guys know if this or any other bike computer is backlit? It might get iffy trying to use that at night. I've been looking at a Trail Tech Vapor but keep getting wallet spasms everytime i do. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Kirk on 08/20/08 at 14:08:36 The Schwinn doesnt have a backlight on it. I was thinking of buying one with a backlight but my pockets werent full enough for me to buy the more expensive models. They do have some with backlights but I dont recall what models there are. Good luck on your search if I come across some I will post them on here for you though. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by WebsterMark on 08/20/08 at 16:02:20 The Sigma 800 is not backlit either. |

The Schwinn I bought at Target ($16) does have a backlight - Indiglo style. You have to hit the left button to turn it on. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Kirk on 08/21/08 at 07:15:06 Hey Meck does your speedo look like mine? I wonder if mine has a backlight too. See the picture of it above. I will have to check mine out when I get home today. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by meck on 08/21/08 at 08:49:00 No, it's a different one - picture here: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41X6D51ZB7L._SL500_AA280_.jpg The backlight looks really great, but the problem is that there is no way to keep it on. It turns off after about 10 seconds and you have to hit the left button again. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by EssForty on 08/23/08 at 12:02:20 I just installed and tested the Sigma 1106. Works great but no backlight either. Mounted mine next to my Digital Tach so I can see Speed and RPM at a glance without looking down. Like others have said-major improvement! 8-) |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by Rockin_John on 08/23/08 at 14:31:49 To the original question: My marks and measurements in the driveway led me to set mine at 2050 with a Chen Shin on front. And now that I've got the magnet problem worked out I love having a heads up style speedo. I always hated the tank speedo and wouldn't mind getting rid of it altogether with a bigger tank now. I've still got that 1-gallon larger GZ250 tank hanging on the garage wall... but I almost hate to bother without getting a big 5-gallon tank to mount. |
Title: Re: Schwinn speedometer tire size converter Post by EssForty on 08/24/08 at 18:54:15 IRC shows the 190/90-19 M/C 57H at 670 mm, not 667. Maybe there is a different tire for the S40 versus the Savage? http://www.irc-tire.com/mce/ Converting at 3.14159 for Pi yields 2105mm. I originally plugged in 2115mm and found it did not match my odometer very well. Seemed OK at first but I found I was off by about 0.6miles after about 72 miles of driving. I also made a small adjustment to my sensor placement and it stopped reading. Looks like the sensor has to be pretty well perpendicular to the magnet path. Moved it about 10 degrees closer to perpendicular and it picked up reading again. I bought the tiny Radio Shack rare earth magnets. Epoxied them to the rim, stacked edge to edge and then mounted the sensor under the fender mount bracket. Probably has about 3/16th clearance. Since my magnets are on the rim edge, I'm about as far from the axle as possible and yet it reads very accurately now that I have dialed in the circumference. |
