Title: LOUD CLICK when I try and start??
Post by savagespence on 08/05/08 at 11:40:11

Ok so im not the sharpest tool in the shed but when I hit the starter switch all it does is make a LOUD CLICK and then if I hold it down it makes another weird sound. I am totally a newbie and if Im doing something wrong just tell me Im a MORON. I hope my engine isnt seized. If someone wants to hear it, I'll call them and maybe they can diagnosis the problem. ANY ANY ANY help before this thing goes to the shop and I spend out my eyeballs..

That loud click is more than likely your decompression solenoid working. It is SUPPOSED to do that. What you probably have is a weak battery but that is just a guess with the little info you have given so far.

Please provide a bit more info.

Year
Mileage
New/Used
How long has it set
Was it running fine before this

Things of that sort.

I agree.  Sounds like a bone dead battery to me.

Sorry, Its a 96 savage and a friend of mine gave me a steal of a deal for it. They said it ran but they let it sit in the garage for a looong time(over a year). The bike LOOKS great and only has 4600 miles. She was the only owner and a trusted friend. I tried jumping it on a NON running car battery and thats the noise Im getting. So I'll go get a new battery like I thought it was. It has been sitting for awhile... Let me know what else yall think I should do.

With that info, I am even more sure it is the battery. Let us know what happens. You will also want to clean the carb and run some sea foam or equivalent through the tank especially since it's been sitting over a year.

change oil
drain gas out of tank and put in fresh.
pull spark plug, make sure engine rotates at all (put in gear, move bike forward)
drain carb bowl
clear mouse nests out of air box
clear mouse nests out of muffler (or not, that can be exciting when it first fires up)
geezzz.. lots of stuff

other comments people?

Check tires for dry rot and weather cracking as well.

If you jump start you need the car running, let it run for a couple minutes before you try to start it.

The charging system on the bike isnt meant to have a dead battery , could cook some stuff,( just my opinion, others may say "go for it" & if so,, go for it) stick a new battery in, you know you need one, be patient, do it right the 1st time. Recommend the Big Crank, or if ya just gotta ride it, get a lead acid & have fun!

Do not have the car running when jumping a motorcycle. It puts out too many amps.technically you're not suppose to even jump a bike with a car.

Have you checked to see if the motor rotates at all (either with tools or by putting it in gear and rolling it)?

I had two GR650's you could not jump start one from the other

Speaking for the cheap people like me, check the fluid level in your battery.  You'll probably have to take it out to check this level (I did),  but maybe not.  If the fluid is low, you might be able to get away with filling it up with distilled water and letting it charge a while (overnight is best) on a battery tender.  I've learned the hard way that it's important to keep an eye on that water level!

If you wanna go buy a new battery, that's great.  However IF it's just the water level, 74 cents for a gallon of distilled water would save ya some money.

AMPS=VOLTAGExRESISTANCE
In my expirience, and I am an electrical tech here at work, AMPS is only going to be the amount that the load(your starter) is pulling. Hence, a car battery is CAPABLE of producing more amps but it will not "force feed" your system. Now, if you used a 6 volt or 24 volt battery, you would have problems. But our bike uses a 12 Volt system just like a car. No problems there. Didn't mean to jump your case, but I wanted to clarify.

Max the old auto shop teacher agrees, unless you do not observe correct polarity, using a larger battery than normal won't hurt anything as long as the voltage is =. We've used D-8 group batteries( think CAT engines some were 1800 CCA, our Savage battery is about 160 and the AGM are rated at 190 CCA) for years on a hand truck to jump start vehicles below 0 in the instructional parking area. Once they came up with those nifty booster pacs, life in the winter was much easier. No 12 V to 6V systems or 24 V trucks or equipment to 12 V stuff. An be cautious around pre 55 Domestic cars with positive ground and English cars for a few years after that. Max

I've seen many of motorcycles jumped from a car and never hurt the bike
