Title: On the road again...(finally!)

Well, after 4 months of working on it, I finally got my Savage back on the road this weekend.  Fired her up on Thursday, did a little riding around on Friday to test her, then rode 150 miles on Saturday with a friend and his wife.  We only meant to go up to Oakhurst (about an hour's ride away), but when we got there, being such a beautiful day and everything working so well, we just had to ride to Glacier point in Yosemite!

Anyway, she's not all done, but mostly back together.  There's still some work to be done and I don't have pics of everything yet.  I'll post as I can.  My brother did the hard work and there are some real inovations I want to share with you, giving him the credit.  I'll get more pics up as soon as I can.

Some of the mods finished are:

  • New fiberglass full fenders
  • Full size, adjustable floorboards
  • Frame modifed to fit the new rear fender and fit the sportster seat
  • New tail light and turn signals
  • Polished front forks
  • Header painted black

Things still left to do:

  • HD Dyna muffler mounted (couldn't get the fit right in time - needs an extension with a slight bend in it to fit)
  • Get a REAL seat (maybe corbin sportster), this one HURTS
  • PAINT IT!  My dad is an ex bodyshop painter and promised to put a nice paint job on it...provided he gets to ride it.

Funny thing is no one could figure out what kind of bike it was.  I had three different guys ask me what it was (all three riders).  I asked two of them what they thought it was, both said it must be an old Harley.  I asked them if they ever heard of HD making a big single and they said no.  They were interested in it till I said it was a modified Suzuki Savage.  So when the third guy asked, I said it was a "custom".  That was good enough for him.

Bike is looking good man.  I also envy you just a tad for being close enough to Yosemite to ride there on a whim.

The full size floorboards are a real wonderful addition...SO COMFORTABLE.  I bought adjustable ones, drilled the hole larger and mounted them.  But the stop was in the wrong place.  I asked my brother to weld a stop on the piece, but he had a better idea.  He drilled a hole through the suzuki mountings for a set screw.  It allows you to adjust the angle of the floorboards.  Here are some pics show the floor board.  The bike was still incomplete at the time of the pics.

Here's a close up.  The bolt was replaced by allen set screws.

So that's a 19sorta5 Surton?  B'ZukA?
I wonder if it would CP to put a "JAP" logo on a japanese bike.

I tip my hat to your innovative brother, sweet floor board adjusters.  A chrome acorn nut would complete the look and lock those puppies in.

I think your issue with the seat comes from how much it's up in front.  Mine is even with the back of the tank so the seating portion is almost flat.  You can scooch forward and take the pressure off the tail bone.  With it tipped up like that, you have no choice but to sit in the bucket.  Or take the cover off and shave it to remove the bucket.

But my choice would be either paladin's springer or a police seat.

And I would concider radiusing the front fender trailing edge like the rear.

The floorboard "nut" is now replaced with a small set screw flush with the metal.  You don't even notice it.

My brother really likes the seat on it, however, he hasn't ridden it for over 10 minutes yet.  I do have a shaved down sportster seat that's much better.  I didn't put it on for the trip and really suffered for it.

Yes, the front fender will be changed.  It's one of the items that still need to be changed.
