Title: Another Top Speed Question
Post by ralfyguy on 08/03/08 at 07:56:05

Does this sound normal?

80F outside = 95mph Top Speed

105F outside = 85mph Top Speed

Would the heat make such a difference?
Or is  this fiction?

hotter temps = less dense air
less dense air means less oxygen for optimum combustion and less power

that is a pretty big difference though, and 95 is a bit more top end than expected, I would thing that a tail/headwind would also account for the large discrepancy.

Humidity could play a factor as well.

It's been over a hundred degrees here, and the bike really seems to be feeling the heat. Performance has been down somewhat, but not quite to the extent that you're reporting. Then again, I've never even got close to 95mph.

95 mph ! wow! when I got my bike 3 years ago top speed was 80,after a few mods,150 main jet,Jardene drag muffler,K&N filter, iridium spark plug, I can now get up to 85,with the mods I seem to get there quicker.
I think maybe your speedo is off a bit mate.

I had mine up to 80 with some throttle left. 95-100 sounds about right on a good day. :)

The other day I was riding in front and my wife behind me in the cage. I had my son on the back and we were going to the lake. He wanted to ride the motorcycle there. Speed limit was 70mph. So we were going around 75mph. My wife hept falling behind, and I had to slow down to about 65mph every now and then for her to catch up. When we got there, I asked her why she was going so slow all the time. And she said she was doing 80 most of the time and didn't wanna go any faster. So when I did 75mph on the bike, she was doing 80mph. Weird.  :o

That means yours will do 100mph by your wifes car right.

Maybe the wife's car speedo is even more off. Dunno :)

If it's anything like mine, you have throttle movement left.  When I hit 80, I'm at about 13/16 open throttle.  The rest of it gives me a whopping 3 mph.  No matter what I do, I can't seem to break 83 on the level.  That's with a 155 main.  I don't know how these guys are able to fly along at 95.

I hit around 85 the other day, and that was maxed out pretty much.  150 main jet compliments of ReelThing.  Temperature in the 90s.  I think my losing the 30 lbs I should might help my top speed.  Going 85 burns way too much gas, and it's unsafe, so I don't do it often.

every once in a while going home, I have a hill I let her have her head.  It's the kinda grade cagers slow 5 to 10 if they're not watching.  And trucks labor up.

It's my testing ground.  87 in the winter, 85 now.  wondered where the 2 miles went.  went up in the heat.

Seems to me from all that I hear that our speedos are usually not the most accurate items by a long shot. I know mine's off by 5%-10% depending on the back tire. It's never been closer than the 5% though. I've had it checked by radar, other bikes and vehicles as well as running a hundred miles of interstate markers on several occasions. Mine reads sixty, I'm usually going close to seventy.

I guess what I'm saying is is to take it out and get it checked. Either go the mile marker route or have a friendly constable check it for you. Then figure out how fast you're "really" going.

86 MPH is the most I've done (using an accurate bicycle speedo).  80 MPH at 1/2 throttle is typical.  Pod filter/turnout pipe/155 main, still can't break thru 90.  I think the biggest issue is aerodynamics.  I have a large windshield on the front that I think is producing too much drag.  Not enough HP to kick it up.

The 5-0 around here sets up those little radar stations that tell you how fast you are going and I've checked using one, I am off by about 5 mph, give or take 1-2. But I've also heard that a radar gun can range +/-7mph, its a law in alabama that a speeding ticket must be at least 7mph over the limit because of that discrepency.

I just went through this problem myself.  On the way to Mountainfest I was riding with two other bikes (a Harley and a V-Star) and they kept falling further and further back.  I kept a close else on my speedo and I was going a steady 70 mph.  Finally my buddy pulled in range and flashed his lights to pull off at the next exit.

I was MAD because they couldn't even do the speed limit on those big bikes but before I got the chance to complain, they said they were doing 80+ at times to keep up and I just kept pulling away.  So when we got back on the Interstate each of them gave a thumbs up when they hit 70 ... I was reading 63!!!

Chain mod?
Stock tire?

It's very uncommon for a speedo to underestimate the speed, very common to overestimate.  Unless you've done a mod.

I use a Veypor VR1 and compares almost dead on with the speedo.  And I do have D404 140/90-15 instead of stock.

No, still have the belt and still run stock IRCs.  It reads 6 or 8 mph less on the Interstate than what I'm actually running, but seems to be right on the money in the city.  It's like it gets worse the faster I go?!  Oh well, it's no big deal.  Someday I'll get bored and tinker with it, but for now I don't care.

I worked for a company that manufactured flow meters.  They took speedo's from a ford pinto and recalibrated them.  Inside the speedo is a magnet that can be increased in strength or decreased.  But it takes a special machine.  Tinkering with it wont do any good.  replace if it bothers you.

Ah! hears a thought, find some with the chain conversion and trade with him.  even better if he has like mileage.   ;D
