Title: How many miles?
Post by sictransitgloria on 08/02/08 at 20:07:48

How many miles are on your Savage/S40?

I am looking to buy one for commuting. Looks pretty rugged - wondering how long I might expect it to last.

Thanks,

John

I'm around 8500 right now.  My parts bike had 19,000 on it when the dumb P.O. ran it out of oil and seized up the engine.  I'm told it was running good right up until the CLUNK.

I picked up a 2000 late 2004 with just over 5K on it.  I live four miles from work, with a 8 to 38 mile daily commute (some days the bike just doesn't want to go home.)  Also ran it to OKC and back a year ago, superslab out and two-lane return.  It now has over 24K and I really really ought to at least look at the spark plug.

Just put on a set of Metezlers, so it has to last at least another 25K to wear out the front tire.

I saw one that was looking pretty ragged in a Wal mart lot with (IIRC) over 80,000 on it. Mine only has 18,000 on it & it isnt threatening to roll over & die.

2001 with 12,500 on it. I bought it in March with about 8400 on it. I'm planning on riding it until it either falls apart or I win the lottery.

Guess that means I'll have it for a long time.  :)

9,000 mi. for me on a 98 LS650. With this site,  contributer mods and synthetic oil I am optimistic about hitting 20-30k be for she gets left for a yonger, prettier smelling S40.

I bought my used 2000 two almost three years ago with 9k on it. It's got 24k on it now. I've done nothing to the engine but change the oil (synth) and goop up the rubber plug to stop the oil seep there. Oh yeah, and ride it hard all over the eastern half of the country. Still runs strong, but I'm going to do some preventative stuff (cam chain) before the next long trip (4k+) it goes on.

My '86 is my main ride.It has 14,000.'87 I'm building now has 25,000,supposedly ran good, just leaked oil.I'm pulling the engine apart anyway to check it all out.

the only major mechanical problem related to lots of miles is cam chain wear, which usually becomes a problem between 12k and 20k (it can often be fatal.)  It's not too bad of a fix if you get Verslagen's chain tensioner upgrade which prevents the assembly from separating into your engine when it extends beyond its maximum ability.

i'm just about at 25,000 on my 2006

If you do a Verslaggy cam chain modification and keep up with it every 20-30,000 miles, who knows how long you can go.  Bikes tend to die from accident or neglect -- very rarely does a bike get to wear out.

I have a 1986 like Demin with just over 14000 miles on it, still working out a few bugs but it starts and runs every time.

I've only had mine since spring. It's a new '08. Had 1.2 miles on it when I left the dealer, now pushing 2900. I run a 30 mile commute (each way) four days a week, all superslab at 60 - 65 mph. The bike performs beautifully, and gets a consistent 50mpg. With a Clymers, this forum, a few tools, and the willingness to learn to wrench, you can do the few basic maintenence items and rare repairs yourself without any trouble. It's a good bike.

Got my '08 newin the spring too. I Drive it to work and as many day trips as pratical.  It's stock with about 2,400 miles on it now. It's averaging about 65mpg (imperial gallon).

2004 that I bought 7 weeks ago.... Had 8600 on it...

Now it has 9+k on it and the commute it 60 miles per day, after I get done correcting the PO (privous owners) lack of work on the bike, I will be moding it all winter to a more elegant form....

My plans for the future of the bike..... My daugher is helping and hoping she will get to ride it ( she is 4 1/2 now) ;)

I have an 05 S40. Given by my wife and children in 2005 on the occasion of my 50th BD. It has around 6000+miles. I have 2 bikes and intentionally would like to keep my S40's mileage low for personal reasons and emotional reason. Good bike. I logged a total of more than 21,000 miles in 2and a half years.

My '02 has about 22K on it and the cam chain needs to be done.

95 with 24K.  It would have another 2-3K but I got another bike a couple months ago and I've been working on the Savage...

14,767 miles on 2000 Savage. Approximately 250 to 300 of those on top end rebuild.

2001 with 14,399 when I got off the bike at work this morning.  Bought it last July (2007) with 10,460.

18,000 on my '95. I'm the third owner, put 11,000 on myself in 2 1/2 seasons. Always starts right up, no choke or nothing, even after I rejetted the carb myself. Freakin miracle!  :D

I had just over 51,000 on mine when I finally put it to pasture.

It was still running, but needed some TLC to put it back into top shape.

I got away with no head-plug oil leak until 45,000 miles.  The cam chain and tensioner were original.

I just kept throwing on new tires, a new drive belt and oil changes every 3500 miles and she just kept on ticking....

Have a 1987, and just rolled over 15,000 miles. There's remains of gray sealer between the top and bottom parts of the cylinder, so someone's been in there before. For what I don't know, but I'll find out when I fix the oil leak during the winter.

Whoa. nice coincidence there. I bought my '01 in march with 8505 on it and rolled over 13k two days ago.

When I bought mine (see signature) it had 50 miles on it and had been sitting in a tool shed in Houston for a year.

After a thorough carb cleaning, it ran great.

I don't own a cage, but have two big road bikes.  So, I use the Savage for around town duties.

So far, so good.  I ride mine year round, in all types of weather.  It has 9000 miles on it now.

I can't think of a better urban bike.
