Title: Forward Controls
Post by Toymaker on 08/01/08 at 12:20:38

Well with Ed L. here, I went ahead ahd got a set of 4 inch forward controls.  Ed and I, (mostly Ed) put them on and this is my first impression.

WOW...........

DidI say WOW?

Yep Wow.  Yesterday, I sat on a H-D sportster custom and with Ed's controls on and my seat lift, the position is identical.  I feel like I am sitting in a cage (car).  Legs are nicely stretched, but not orverly so.  With my feet and legs faerther out, it makes the positioning on my tailend more focused toward the rear of the seat.  Much more comfortable.  We went for a little ride (about 40 minutes) and I wasn't sore, butt-numb or anything..  very very nice.

No this isn't a paid endorsement...they really do mnake it a much morte comfortable bike to ride.  The only thing that has needed adjustment was the shift lever.  Because my foot angle was different, we had to raise the lever up a bit.  But it took all of 10 seconds to do.

Am I pleased?

You bet. :)

where did you get the forward controlss and seat lift from?

Title: Re: Forward Controls

The forward control extensions came from ED_L on this site.

I also have EdL's controls, did the seat lift mod and agree, between the two are miles and miles of comfy riding. Weirdest thing about the forward controls is wind resistance. My toes pointed into the wind with original position now they point up somwhat. The wind pushes against the bottoms of my feet and I feel like I have to press my shoes into the pedals. Lately I've tried resting my heels on the pegs and find that works better.

I just put the forward controls on too, I laughed out loud first time I rode with them on. Can't wait to do a sportster seat conversion now.
I think that will complete the transformation!
Go ED L!!!! Thanks for the super fast shipping. ;D

After our ride this weekend, we all noticed a slight bend in my plates.  I Talked with Oldfeller and we came up with a mod of a mod.  I removed the frontmost bolt that goes through the footpegs and took a piece of 3/8" allthread 13 1/2 inches long and made a "bolt" out of the threaded rod.  Ran it through a 3/8 id metal pipe and tied the two footpegs together.  Tightened them down and WOW what a difference.  The two plated together act like they are much thicker...no flexing at all.  Also, I now have a place to hang a toolbag that I didn't before...or maybe an aux fuel tank...?????

:)

I've been thinking about doing that to mine, just for a little extra strength.Just haven't got around to it.

Great minds think alike.... ;)   I just did that to my ED L. extensions this weekend..

I'm a worry wart type and was concerned that the kickstand made the plate flex.  Then I noticed the flex when I pushed with my legs a bit to stretch.     The "All-thread"  made a wolrd of difference.  I painted it black then put rubber hose over it.

Title: Re: Forward Controls
Post by Toymaker on 08/06/08 at 08:09:38

I put the allthread inside a plumbing pipe, that way I could tighten the plates up on it.  Also painted it all black.  The pipe is almost the same size as the frame tubes...looks like it is meant to be there.

Yea ok......  just a little too busy to run down to the parking lot to snap a picture.  And the cellphone camera is a little lame.

Toymaker,  you should think about moving the heat shield up a little.  It almost looks like you might be burning some pants there..... NOTE: this is a pre all-thread pict.

I'm going to make the two ... two ... two plates as one (too much teevee and the doublemint gum thing springs out occasionally) as well. That's where I'll figure out a horizontal oil cooler placement. Scoop air through it from above and dump it out the bottom. My thinking on this is it;ll redirect hot air flow away from me while riding. Vertical position would have hot air from oil cooler blowing back towards legs (?).

Ed - What's your experience with a vertical oil cooler?

Title: Re: Forward Controls
Post by Ed L. on 08/07/08 at 19:03:13

If you mean a oil cooler that fills from the bottom from to the top (vertical) I've been using one off what I think was a GXS'er with no problem. At first I thought that a horizontal (side fill) cooler would have problems with air pockets and not filling but I have changed my opinion on it. There is plenty of flow at a higher RPM which will purge any trapped air in a cooler. When I first installed my set of forward controls I was using a cross bar also, had my gremlin bell hanging off it. I've been thinkng about putting it back on, it does make a difference and fills in the space between the plates. Glad everybody likes the kits, I'll be making more in the near future.

Ed,
Maybe you might want to add a bump / tab on the right plate so that the heat shield can be raised.   With the extensions, your leg is farther front thus higher on the angled exhuast pipe.

For mine, I used some alum. flatt bar put on behind the plate, and washers for spacers whereever needed (bottonm hole & top H.S. hole).  It would be easier if a tab was added......

how much were your foword controls? and do they make them for a 2000 savage? or do i have to by them for a sporster?

Post by Ed L. on 08/10/08 at 17:10:07

No, you don't need to buy a set for a sporty, don't think that they would fit. I've been making them just for the savage, PM me if interested.

Does 4" forward work with the OEM engine guard?

ED_L:    hey, I'm a newbie to both riding a cycle and learning how to modify.  I just bought an 05 S40.  I'm 6' 1" / 230.  Really found out my foot and seat position is cramped.  These forward controls and seat modification seem like the trick.  Do you make them for the 05, and would you send directions about the install.   Live in NY.  Thanks.

I'm 6'2" and just put the controls on a couple days ago. You may want to go with 5-6 inchers. The 4" are great and the more I ride with them the more I like them but I could still use a bit more stretch.

Nice thing about the LS650/S40 is that many parts are the same through out all model years.  The foot controls are one of those items.  1986 thru 2008 are interchange-able so the control extensions work on all years....

Title: Re: Forward Controls
Post by Ed L. on 09/19/08 at 13:14:13

I've been recommending the seat lift as the first mod for leg room. It give the rider a lot better position and is the easiest and best bang for the buck. I'm still making the sets, 3 inchers for shorter inseams under 30 inches and the 4 inchers for anyone with a 32 inseam or longer. Thanks to a suggestion by Toymaker (another upgrade) I am also offering a cross brace made out of 3/8 all thread and a piece of tubing that ties the two plates together. It is stuff that you can pick up just in about any hardware store but I thought it would be simpler if I started including it for $5.00 which is my cost for materials. Send me a PM if interested.

do i have to replace the footpeg for the foward control to work?

Title: Re: Forward Controls
Post by Toymaker on 09/19/08 at 20:14:10

Nope.  The footpeg assemblies bolt right up to the new plates.  It is a very easy mod to do.  I just love mine.  Your seating positon is more like that of a car.
:)

you'll need a lift or a friend though. the kickstand and left peg are part of the same assembly which you're moving so you'll need some way to support the bike.
