Title: Soution to luggage rack Post by shadowman on 07/25/08 at 15:27:17 Got one of those bags that fits over the sissy bar, which is OK except when I wanted to lash a tent and bag to the pilion -- reversing the bag caused it to droop over the tail light. Considered OEM rack, but... Cruising through Home Depot I was thinking about a possible joist hanger/spot weld fix, but then stumbled on the Closetmaid "All Purpose Hang Up" (Closetmaid Part #3545, in HD's shelving department). Total cost less than $6, 30-minute install. Sweet. Does the trick and almost looks like it was custom made. I have photos but can't load them. If anyone can help me with the pix, I'll provide instructions and visuals. |

BikePics is free and allows you to re-link pretty easily. I'm wondering the same thing too... I'm thinking about the OEM rack, but depending on how this looks, I may go a different route. (For those interested... There's a neat rack listed on EBay right now. When I looked, only $0.99 with no bids, except you can't have the sissybar in place unless you want to modify it somehow) |

Title: Re: Solution to luggage rack Post by shadowman on 07/25/08 at 16:14:26 Installation instructions: The Closetmaid All Purpose Hang Up has two pre-drilled 3/16" holes -- top and bottom. You are going to need a 3/4 x 3/16" bolt and nut and a 1 x 3/16" bolt and nut. 1) remove backrest (peel off nameplate, then two screws) 2) drill a 3/16" hole dead center between the two backrest screw holes 3) line up the bottom hole on the rack with the hole you just drilled and mark the top of the sissy bar at the top hole on the rack; drill that out. 4) thread the 3/4 x 3/16" bolt through the plate and bottom hole of the rack -- do not tighten yet, just start it. 5) rotate the rack 90 degrees so you can re-attach the back rest -- replace backrest and start the two screws but do not tighten 6) thread the 1 x 3/16" bolt through the top of the sissy bar (from front of bike to toward the back); then finish tightening the backrest 7) Rotate the rack back to vertical and push the top bolt through the top hole on the rack. 8) tighten the two bolts/nuts and you're done. Pix to follow, I hope. |

Of course, before posting the instructions and photos I conducted the Savage Owners' Standard Performance Test, i.e., a case of Yeungling. I had to wedge a hunk of 2x4 to keep it from sliding, but it only dipped about 1/8" I'll probably stick to 25-20 lbs. |
