Title: New Savage Owner
Post by itschnobigdeal on 07/25/08 at 07:21:36

Well I just picked up a 1996 Savage a couple days ago. This is my third bike, and 3rd this season (I just started this year). My first bike was a Yamaha Seca II, which I loved but the seating position sucked and it got blown around too much on the road. I thought I was getting into the whole sportbike thing, so I sold the Seca and bought an FJ1200. The FJ was great, way too much power, kinda comfy, handled great and cut through the wind, but then it started to have a ton of problems.. 2nd gear went out, it started leaking gas all over, the speedo cable fell out, all that and more and I didn't have the dough to fix it... So I sold that. I decided that a cruiser style bike looked fun and more comfy, but my budget was small and I was focused more on economy and reliability. I found the ad for the Savage, researched them (thanks to you guys partly) and went to take a look. I couldn't believe how much of a good looking bike it was, especially for the price. It looks like a new big boy-expensive bike, minus one half of a big v twin. I took it for a ride and thought it was just a riot to rip around on. It's got custom grey sparkle paint, with Savage "Big Twin" decals. It's in amazing shape and 13k miles, needs nothing, windshield, etc. I'm 5'11 205, so I feel a little cramped on it, but it's still a relief from the crotch rocket style. The best thing of all, i got the bike for $1000! There is no way a better looking, or reliable bike out there for 1000 bucks! I'm still just pumped about this thing, and I intend to hold onto it. Even if i upgrade to a bigger bike someday this will make a perfect commuter/spare/wife's bike. I'll post some pics asap, but I'm just already proud to be a part of this community!

Welcome to the party.  Sounds like you got a great deal.  At 13,000 miles, I plan to have checked my cam chain adjuster about 1000 miles ago, if you get my drift.  You might want to peek in there just to prevent any uh-oh moments later on.  It's not a huge project.  I might even do mine early, once this summer has passed.

Welcome and congratulations!  Sounds like you got a real steal on that one.  And the maintenance on the Savage won't break your bank either.  But don't worry, you'll still find things to spend money on.  No bike "needs nothing", if you get my drift.  There's always something else you just wish you had....  ;D

Now get out there and ride the heck out that baby!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I guess I have been a bit of a bikewhore... but I'm for sure sticking with this one for quite a while. Third times the charm, right? I hear people complaining about the backfiring.... I love it!!! I would like a little deeper rumble out of her though... I'll maybe be looking into a better muffler, more comfy seat if there is one, and some highway pegs. She's a little cramped for me, but only after riding it straight for an hour and a half.

Check out my springer seat, about $60 total.  http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1214704691

With the saddle in the original high position the Wife look very comfortable on it:

And she's not a shrimp like yourself -- 6'1" or 6'2" with a 36" inseam.

And then there's that Cop Seat.....

Welcome newbie

Just got done posting this for another newbie in trouble so I'll pass this bit of advise on to you... The easist way to tell how well your bike has been taken care of is to open her up and look at the cam chain adjuster.
