Title: McCuff - gas tank fill adapter
Post by 07S40rider on 07/24/08 at 08:30:34

I thought I originally heard about these on this forum but I can't seem to find the thread.  Anyway, I just placed an order for one of these and as soon as I get it in I will give a quick review here for those interested.  If anyone has already used one and has some thoughts on it, I would love to hear about it.

I hate the california vapor crap.  I always have to hold it back.  I dont know if I'd pay $20 for the convience though.

Oh my.  I watched the entire video.  Now I need a shower.  I think that guy is a McCon man.  He's selling a $20 funnel, for Pete's sake.  I would spend your money on some Mcpaper towels, or better yet, use the free ones conveniently located right next to the gas pump.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go sharpen my veg-o-matic and oil my ab master. ;D

Whoa! Free carrying case included?

For my fillups, I just hold the nozzle in the tank and watch how many gallons I'm putting in. When I see it reaching the top, I stop.

Ah, what can I say.  I am a sucker for gadgets.  Especially yellow rubber ones.   ;D  I'm not so much interested in it for the 'no spill' aspect but I do not enjoy standing their using both hands and hoovering above the tank continually clicking in .10 cents at a time for the last half-gallon of gas.

I don't enjoy it, but it doesn't bother me.  I pull back the boot and just stick the tip of the nozzle into the tank.  Will admit I have to switch to my reading glasses to see the gas approach the top, but I'm within an ounce or three before I click off.  Only do the squeeze the last bit in if I'm on a trip and will be pushing that tank.

If I had a hassle like that I bet I could find something to haul around a lot smaller than any funnel that would hold that sleeve back. We dont have them here( thankfully), but Ive seen them on TV & I think I could build a wire clip that would hold it back & be easy to haul around.

I just took the blades out of the bottom of my old 'Bass-O-Matic' pitcher and use it a fill ups. I wonder if the old fish guts will clog the carb?

Man, oh man! Reading all this certainly makes me glad that I finally escaped from the People's Republic Of Kalifornia a decade ago. I remember having to stick my key under the lip of those contraptiions to get my cars to fill up correctly, and then of course there were the ones that would seem to work correctly and then upchuck all over the side of your vehicle when you pulled it out.

I think it looks Mcstupid...and furthermore, what advertising exec decided to back up that commercial with Abba's "Dancing Queen?"  YIKES!   :o

That's exactly what I was thinking...crappy commercial.  The commercial was more about the guy riding his bike than it was the thing he was trying to sell.  Maybe if it was a chick showing it off...but not that guy, he ain't no Billy Mayes!  And needs to throw in the.... "but if you order now..." to get our attention.  A chick and a 2-for-1 value...then maybe we would be interested.

I am a retired ORT truck driver. I pulled tankers hauling HAZMAT for years. This plastic funnel is a No-No! When discharging any flammable liquid from one container to another there has to be a completed ground to both containers. This plastic funnel makes this impossiable as it insulates the metal nozzle from the rim of the gas tank. Without a ground static electricy can upset your whole day! That' all I'm going to say about that!

So how does that grounding work when you fill up your 5 gallon plastic gas 'can' for your lawnmower?

plastic can't be grounded, only metal can can be grounded. That's why a gas station is such a dangerous place . It's not the gas that's bad but fumes or vapors that causes the explosion. You have people using cell phones, maybe a guy walking around with an exposed nail in the heel of his shoe or a car rolling in with a nail or screw sticking out of his tire. Now you have the possibility of a spark. How many times have you seen some dimwit smoking in a car or around the car while it's be fueled. When I drove for Ashland Chemical I got to see many safety films and believe me a chemical explosion is not a pretty site.

That's why there is so much open space at a gas station, ventilation.  I saw a video where a guy was filling gas cans in the back of his pickup.  The vapors gathered in the bed, something sparked (friction or something) and the whole pickup bed went up with him in it.  Scary!  Main thing is ventilation, allow the vapors to dissipate.

Not an endorsement just stating some facts...

plastic can conduct electricity, either by a coating or additives to the material.

And throw a lit cig into a pool of gas and the cig will go out.

But vaporize that pool and mix it with air 14:1 and I wouldn't even want to fart in the general direction of that cloud.   :o

You guys are seriously taking all of the fun out of my new yellow rubber gadget... :P  speaking of fumes, that is about where my bike is at now so I should get a chance to use the McGoofy on my way home.  With a little luck, maybe I won't blow the entire gas station up.

FWIW -- the metal tip of the gas pump's nozzle sticks out past the McCuff,  so that's where the metal nozzle should contact your metal gas tank, providing that much needed, if momentary, ground.

As for the lawnmower or boat tank -- just get it out of the vehicle and on the ground for filling.

Yup, I saw a demonstration of gasoline's explosive power at a Power Squadron boating course -- pretty impressive how much "Pop" was in just a few drops of gasoline vapor!

outstanding.  I used the McGoofy yesterday and to my surprise, I did NOT blow up the gas station!  It also worked exactly as advertised.  Stuck it on the nozzle, filled up my tank, it clicked once and had exactly the amount of gas I like to put in my tank without me having to fart around with it at all.  Call me what you will but I think it is a handy thing to have.  Of course since I am wearing a full face helmet and  riding a big single in a world full of V-twins, shorts and half-helmets I consider myself a non-conformist rider anyway.  ;D

07S40, I just gotta know...  Is that a picture of you next to all your posts?  I can't see it very clearly because of its size, but the tinfoil hat cracks me up.  We used to deal with a guy that would call 911 to report the aliens crawling through his duct work again and again.  Finally got him to wear a tinfoil hat, and that took care of them.  They couldn't track him with their scanners as long as he wore it.

Is it twice as bad when you use a plastic gas can and plastic funnel too?

That is not a picture of me.  I dug that up on a google/images search one day due to a conspiracy oriented co-worker.  I get a kick out of it too and that is why I use it.

My kid has all those episodes on DVD.  Watching Adam work his "panty static generator" trying to blow up that gasoline cracks me up every time.

Either my Arkansas education is as bad as everyone thinks it is or I just slept through this part of english class.  If I read you correctly, you stock McCuffs (now known as the McGoofy) at your Victory dealership and can't sell them to your anal Victory customers?  If that is the case, I think it is just a matter of them being too 'manly' to carry around a goofy yellow rubber gadget.   :P

All joking aside Bill, I think you will like it.  With the pump nozzles we have in TN, it allows me to just hold until the 1st click and then I have the perfect amount of gas in my tank to get me 'full' but not overfilled to where gas leaks out of the cap while I'm riding.   Especially when riding with a group and jaw-jackin at the gas pump.  8-)  I can pay more attention to my bad jokes and don't have to be heads down focused so as to not splatter gas all over my boots.  ;D

RE the portable plastic containers. There is a sign on most pump or pump islands saying to fill them on the ground not in the bed of the PU/trailer or trunk of the car. Also any small airplane pilot knows to clip a bonding wire between the plane tank and container when refilling or your plane can be burned to the ground as a result. Some snow machine drivers have also found out the hard way when refueling hot sleds from a jostled plastic container. Max

Gas nozzle aids have been around for a long while.  Here's one that looks good for quite a bit less $$ than the McCuff (takes up less room, too):

E-Z Fill (http://www.aerostich.com/product.php?productid=17026&cat=462&page=1)

I don't own one, but might if I moved back to CA.

IHTH!
