I am taking off my stock pull back from my 86 and replacing with drag bars.  I have never replaced handlebars before and wanted to gain some expert knowledge on the correct steps in the procedure.  If anyone could provide the best explanation and guidance it would be greatly appreciated.

Place a towel/rug/pad on tank for a ding less experience.

Pry the chrome screw caps off with a small screwdriver or a big knife.

You'll need risers with those little bitty bars.   ;D

Yes I have risers and have the the handlebars off but Im concerned with the throttle, grips, brake fluid box, etc...

If you're changing stock for stock, there'll be no issues (i've done it)

Stock for non-stock, only issue is the locating hole.  Most have said just file off the pin of the controll, I drilled my bars.

That's what I did. I filed off the pin on the clutch side but drilled the bars for the throttle side when I installed my 10 inch mini apes.

I just got done swapping my stock buckhorns for some sportster low rise bars. A couple of things I'll pass along that I wish I would have known in the process.

First, it really is fairly simple, if you've used a wrench before!

Drilling the holes (which technically isn't needed, but still fairly simple) just needs a bit of measuring in order to do correctly. If you're swapping grips at the same time, just make sure that you do a mock up of where you'd like your handlebar controls to be and mark the spot where the mounting pin would hit. You could measure the old bars for placement, but a mockup works just the same

If you're swapping grips. Use some lube. It took me almost 45 minutes to get my throttle grip onto the throttle tube because I didn't lube it up first. It'll save some time in the long run.

Also, if you're concerned about routing and cables, now would be the time to change. Not always needed, but sometimes cleans things up depending on your preference.

Also make sure you aren't going to have any clearance problems from full turn to full turn. It would be a shame to get everything mounted only to hit the tank!
