Title: Savage enduro
Post by verslagen1 on 07/15/08 at 11:27:41

My dad (85 years young) took me digging for gold last month up by big bear lake.  And there are a lot of jeep trails up there going all over the place, and I got the idea that might be fun to take some of this on a bike.  At some point I want an enduro for this purpose.  In the mean time, I'm not always going to be able to go with him and will have to meet up at a later date.  You know, after camp is set up, claim staked, and dinner cooked...  ;D

So, nearly having a spare set of wheels laying about, what tires would you recomend putting on the savage for off pavement duty?  But also will see hiway duty to get there.

I would check with what the BMW GS650 crowd does as those bikes have been around a long time and see dual duty all the time.

I am jealous of you folks that have offroad trails near you.  I have a Jeep Wranger in the Chicago area with nowhere close to 'go wheeling'!

I feel your pain.  I have to drive at least 100 yards down a paved road to get to the nearest wheelin' spot.  We all have our crosses to bear I guess.

Yeah, me too...I'm just sitting pretty on 2 acres of rolling hills and a creek...if only I had time....

As far as I can tell, no one makes an Enduro tire in 15", so the rear wheel will need to be replaced by something larger in diameter.  One possibility would be Bridgestone's replacement tires for the Honda NX250:

TW39 Front 90/100-19  25.9" dia x 3.8" wide on a 1.85" rim
TW40 Rear 120/90-16   24.4" dia x 4.9" wide on a 2.5" rim

Compares with their street tires for the Savage:
G701 Front  100/90-19   27.2" dia x 3.6" wide on a 2.15" rim
G544 Rear 140/90-15   25.2" dia x 6" wide on a 3.5" rim

Front is a hair wider, but the rear is smaller than stock so it'll fit no problem.

I recall looking into on/off road tire possibilities for our Later model Savages (Most folks know that there was another 250cc Suzuki "Savage" enduro bike back in the 70s).

There weren't many choices because of the stock 15" rear wheel. A chain conversion and wheel change to 17" would really open up some different tire choices. But the swingarm may be a bit short to fit a 17" rim up.

Anyways, Bike Bandit's tire selector on their site is pretty logical to use and they have a decent selection. I recommend you surf their site.

Up to an 18" rear wheel is not a problem with slight modification of the swingarm in the front section. See Out There Kustom Shop.com for pics of one already done. K.J.

Was dat yogert?  m/c knobbies don't wear so well.  What da L?  That just pisses me off!  Dam  I may just go over to the dark side on this.  And my D404 has just about wore out...

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you.

I'm afraid I can't afford 2 bikes right now.  But 2 sets of wheels I have.   ;D

Jim, I've noticed your 18" wheel before.  How did you do that?  Did you find a wheel that works, or put a new rim and spokes on the Savage hub?

Not so sure you need bigger rear tire.  I think if you get larger (taller) shocks for the rear it would also work.

Serowbot has the starts of a LS650 "Scrambler"  ((Street bike convert to 80% Street/20% Off Road).

And then Enduro tires.....

EDIT: jst re-read Paladin's mssg....  I guess maybe have a dirt Tracker "cut" some tires for you.....

definitely going to get taller shocks.
His link didn't have any 15" enduro tires.

I don't know of any dp tires that come in 15".  Sorry.

If you're looking to raise rear shocks cheaply, shocks off of a suzuki 800 Intruder are 2" taller and bolt right up. I put'em on mine.

That certainly is what I'm talking about, add in some fist sized rocks and some... how should I say 'paint can sized' rocks here and there and you got the kind of roads we traveled.

Mine's a little better on dirt trails, washboards, dips and gravel, than the stock Savage, but it sounds like you might need a real dp bike, like my old Yamaha xt225 Serow.  That was a great one in the rough.  And it would cruise at 65mph.

Shame you're on the other coast,  my friend has a Yamamha XT 550  Enduro for sale.

Go darkside and put this on the standard rim as it will grip on slippery wet snow, so your standard mud & dirt likely isn't going to be any sort of issue to it.  It, like a set of normal knobbies, won't last all that long.   You will like the wet paved road performance of this tire a lot better than knobbies though.

Verslagen, just fly oneway to the east Coast and ride your way back  ;)

I gotta say, though...

the Savage certainly has a great engine, but the wrong riding stance.

One would need a wider, flatter set of handlebars, and pull the riding pegs a good 3 inches backwards.

AND fit taller rear suspension.

AND do the chain conversion in order to "toggle" road/off road final drive ratio with possibly a 15 & 17 tooth front sprocket to swap by the roadside.

Then, only then, could one start riding offroad.

PS To all those who've done the chain conversion, would it be possible to have two front sprockets side by side?
i.e. 17 & 13 ? (biggest and smallest)
Perhaps with two rear sprockets of compatible length, i.e. 45 & 46?
That would provide road&track ratios by a mere flip of the chain from one set of sprockets to the next  8-)
