Now I know that turning the pilot air screw IN (clockwise) on the Savage/S40 carb leans it out and turning it OUT (counter clockwise) richens it. What about other carbs?

According to the Clymers for my brothers Honda GL500, it is the same, but then we know how "accurate" a Clymer's can be.

The reason I ask is because a similar site to this one except for it being dedicated to the Honda GL/CX bikes have members there saying that it is opposite.

I just want to know who is correct before we start fiddling with my brothers carbs. He moved up to New Mexico from South Carolina and as a result in altitude change he is running a bit rich now.

Depends on the carb, ours is leaner/in, richer/out. It is blocking a small fuel passage. So in, gives less fuel.
Other carbs can be different. You have info from multiple sources that on the Honda in is rich and out is lean, go with it.

read "Lancers quick and easy carb tuning" in tech section you find the ;) medium via rpms...used the process this weekend on my ct 70 clone
while camping/fishing well above 5000'....turned out to be choke cable(choke lever on handle bar)slipped out of its retainer...but Lancers' tuning method works....

My FCR on KLX has three things that can be adjusted to affect idle and just off idle.
The idle air screw, just to the left of the main air jet looking from the filter side of the carb.
The idle jet down a hole next to the main jet, lot's of sizes available.
The idle mixture screw, underneath the carb body on the center line and towards the engine.
So there you go two screw's and a jet.
