Title: new S40 owner looking for some muffler information
Post by crownironman on 07/10/08 at 19:10:14

I just bought my wife a new S40 and I am looking for a muffler to put on her bike that is louder than the stock but not really loud, she does not want it really loud, just loud enough to be heard in traffic.  I also would like to know a good starting point for jet sizes to get rid of the backfire and go with the recommened muffler.

thanks
Jeff

I second crownironman's question!  I would like a muffler add-on that's not toooo loud nor toooo wimpy as the OEM muffler.

I either just typed this in another thread,  :-/or it's deja vu all over again.  There is a collection of recordings in the Technical section entitled "Savage Sounds."  It's a good place to start.

You can get some performance boost & better sound from HD take off muffs, a couple of types work well I think the Dyna is the better looking. Thats the lo buck approach. If you want easy carb tuning, the Supertrapp is tuneable & has a nice sound. Romp on it, it makes noise, run easy & it'll roll thru a Hospital zone & you wont go to jail. They are a bit spendy, but make tuning easy & I am happy with mine.

I agree HD take off's are the cheapest route to go and they look very nice too that's what i put on mine and it sounds like a motorcycle with or without the baffle in it . If you want to buy a new one and spend some money i would go with MAC not too expensive but higher priced than the HD takeoff's . Definately check out the muffler sound page in the tech section it will give you a good idea on what you might want to get .

this might make me sound silly, but when you say HD takeoff's do you mean getting a muffler from a HD bike?  and if so, what kind will fit our bike's?  Thanks :-[

That's exactly what we are saying. A muffler off of a Harley Davidson. A lot of folks here use the muffs off of a Dyna (which I am assuming they mean Dyna Wide Glide which is of course a Harley)

Not sure of other Harley model exhausts.

My 2006 has a Harley Sportster muffler.  It had it on the bike when I bought it.  Supposedly easy to install, according to the guy who sold me the bike.

Personally, I wish I had the stock muffler, mine is a bit loud for my taste, but then, I'm an OF.

I have a 96 savage with a Jardine exaust.  love the sound but a little loud for my tase.   Got a Dyna muffler off E-bay for 25 dollars  going to try that and see if I can quiet it down just a bit.
