Howdy Yall' I just got signed up. I am going to buy a Savage Saturday. It is a 96 model with a little over 3k. I here they need valve adjustments. How many miles do you go before you need to do your first one? Thanks, bigone

Manual says they should be checked with  your first service at 600 miles.  Ask the current owner if they ever had it done.

Its listed in your owners manual.

Valve clearance check at 600 miles, then 4000 miles, then every 3500 miles there after.

Congrats and welcome.  You've joined a great community here.  Can't advise you on the valve-adjustment, mine was done by the 'zuki dealer when I bought it.  But the info the others have supplied should be sufficient.  It usually is on here.  Have fun & be safe!

Thanks yall, I will ask him when I go there, I got a feeling it has never been done. I will get it done right away. The dealership said it was about three hour job? About $180.00. I would not have thought it would take that long, but what do I know. Thanks for yall's help. Pretty cool site. Like having a big brother!

It's not a hard job,  just a bit tedious.

.... But I did mine in about two hours the other day, maybe less for stopping for refreshments....

I think your dealer might be fibbing a bit.  I'd never done it before and it didn't take me three hours.  The second time I probably halved my first time.

I don't know what their book tells them it should take, but I would think a guy who knows what he's doing and has all the tools right handy should be able to do it in an hour.  One of these qualified wrenchers will correct me if I'm underestimating, but I think I'd call a different mechanic.

I thought it was a bit much too. He may have been talking about the complete first 5k going over? I will clarify before having done. I better get a manual if it has to be done that often. Thanks Yall.

Vroom 1776 did a top-notch write-up on how to adjust your valves.  I would still get a manual, but if you read his article, you will find that it outclasses the book.  It's in the Tech section under "Maintenance."

1st timers...

Take off tank and seat, 5 min
take out sparky, 5 min
remove valve covers, 10 min
remove timing cover 5 min if not stuck.   :o
find tdc on compression 5 min
confirm tdc 1 min
adj valves 20 min

Each step takes stoppin', drinkin' and readin' the good book.

2nd time 20 min and drink the 6 pack after.

bigone,
Don't let the apes with wrenches at the stealership near your bike!
With this site and a manual, you can do the job yourself, and feel confident. I'm not much of a wrencher, but I did my second check in about two hours, with breaks. That was with all the other checks and an oil and filter change too. More or less another 600 mile service at 2000 miles. Vroom 1776's post in the tech section is invaluable as a resource for this job. Save your money for gas.
It's been said here many times that there's nothing like the feeling of doing it yourself, and knowing how your machine is running.

One other thing, if you aren't used to turning wrenches, which I was not.  That write up has lots of details and pictures and information that makes the job sound HUGE.  If you read it while looking at the bike, though, you will see that it is not very complicated.  I printed the thing off, pictures and all, and put it in a binder.  I just packed that out to the bike, sat down with some tools, and got 'er done.

If I can do it, anyone can.

Good luck,
Sandy

Thanks Sandy. How long you had your Savage? I am a big man, I am dissabled, got a very weak leg. Love ridingbut had to go to a much lighter bike. The Savage seemed the perfect bike , 650 should be enough power, yet the lightest bike of that size out there. They are good looking too. I am going after a 96 with only 3k miles. The price is 1,850.00. Seems like a great deal to me. What yall think?

I got my Savage on April 6th this year.  Depending what you mean by "big man," it should do just fine for you.  If you are over 7 feet tall or 900 pounds, you might have some trouble.  I'm around 6'3" and probably about 185-190 right now.  I run the thing around at 70 mph all the time.  They are sneaky though.  Sometimes I look down and find that it has crept up to 80 when I was looking the other way.

I gave $1500 for my '87 with 3000 miles on it.  Many will say I paid way too much, but in this area, that's about the going rate.  It was in great condition, has been gobs of fun, and is saving me all kinds of fuel money.  I drive a 1 ton diesel when forced into my cage.  I say go for it.  It's what it's worth to you that makes it worth what it's worth.

Sandy

yup, I saw your picture. You ain't little. I am 280. Just like to ride and save on gas. I go 70 miles one way to see my girl on week ends. It would be all highway miles just about. I been pricing them around here. As long as he kept it in garage it should be a steal. Pitting and rust, might change things a bit. I will know saturday. I hope he ain't a member and reading this.LOL Take care Sandy. Keep the shiny side up.
