i had a gn400 81   uncle of the savage.  yes the ls400 were japaneese domestic models and other parts around the world.

got to watch the wiring on the japaneese domestic models,, bad rep for wiring burnouts.

i loved my 400  98,000 miles in over 25 years till i finally killed it.
but it lives on...  parts and pieces have made the trip over to thumper. most notably the fenders.

Is the LS 400 the same engine & everything? Looks like the same machine, with a smaller piston slinging up & down. So, is bore & stroke the difference?

I would assume so.

Not 100% sure.

My first bike was a '72 250 Savage. It was a great on/ off road bike. Rode the heck out of it on and off the road. Was a pretty baby blue in color. Wish I could find another just because. But every day my '07 gets better just turned 1K. ;)

Personally, I'd like to see a resurgence in bikes of 350 - 500 cc engines.

With gas prices now at realistic levels, compared to the rest of the world, maybe some of these models available only elsewhere will start slowly showing up here.

Really, 400cc is plenty for most uses, and who would complain about miles per gallon in the 70s?

The LS400 is or was marketed as a Savage in the countries listed in one of the other posts.  Fromwhat I gather from trying to search info on it for some time I have figured out that they share gas tanks fenders side panels foot controls seats and handle bar at least.

The hat was made out of Coors cans, cut up and knitted together.  The brim is flipped up in these pictures.  I think I bought it at some swap meet.

I was in the Navy then, in the days when beards were a part of the uniform!
Still have the beard, but now mostly grey.   :-[  The length varies with my ambition to trim it and the pain caused by getting it caught in the helmet strap.   :D

My first bike was a ts 250 too. 74 or 75... I was 16 and rode the snot out of that thing, solo or with a buddy on the back. Backroads, swamps and not yet opened freeways. Bought it with paper route money with 1400 miles on it. I'd delivered papers to the guy for over 3 years and finally asked about the bike under the visqueen in his garage. It never moved. He got it running and said he wanted $350 and I said I'd give him $300 and a month of free newspapers. :) He took it~! Had a friend drive it home because I had yet to learn to ride.  :o But I knew I wanted to and within a day I was tearing up my yard and the block. Flash 25 or so years later and I am getting back into riding and thought I wanted a 2 stroke dual purpose and got a nice RT 360. The thing beat me to hell so I got a Savage and sold the dirt bike and am whistling dixie since.  8-)

I have savage ls400, in my town only two such the bikes. That Kiev is the capital. I am high pleased the motorcycle. I purchased him a year ago for 2,400 dollars. I had to change overlays on wheels, to repair a carburetter. Actually, it is a very little price for old motorcycles. Mainly on Ukraine motorcycles of 400 cc, former 4000 - 5000 dollars cost in the use. Now I am flustered by the problem of repair parts to my savage. Finding original details is impossible, especially chain... But it is very pleasant to see in the internet, that in this motor cycle is yet popular the world :) I dont know how translating turned out into English, but think, you will understand me.  :)

Welcome Argo! I think the translation gave the gist of your message. Are parts still available for the LS400 in Europe? I'm thinking there are some Members over here in North America who wouldn't mind being able to order a direct bolt-on chain drive conversion?

Thank you guys for pleasant words!  I think that in spring in April will depart in the USA, in Sakramento, can be there are shops in which I will be able to find repair parts for a savage? my uncle and aunt live In Sakramento .
May be you know how many will cost a chain and sprockets for a savage? And how many will cost sending from America to Ukraine?

Title: Re: I had no idea? A 400 cc Savage?

I dont know the cost of parts, but if its hard to get parts where you are I would suggest buying the best you can get. I really dont know much about chains. Several here have years of experience with them & know which ones last the longest. Sprockets? How fast do they wear out, anyway? Should she buy more than 1 set? Maybe get some used one & a set of new, too? More than 1 chain, while she's here?
Dont forget to get tools for chains. Does she need master links? Half Links?

Post by Fourby on 11/08/08 at 17:58:20

It might be cheaper to try to find chains in Europe.  Try www.motozloch.cz/Kits_RM.pdf They have a kit for the 400
Savage on page 2 which gives sprockets teeth and chain size and length.  That may give you a head start.

One of our members posted pics after a trip to Japan,he took a picture of a very nice 400cc Savage,it was listed in the Cafe.

I believe that the 400cc Savage was initially marketed in Japan because of engine size restrictions in that country.
It was nearly the same machine as the 650 Savage or S40 with the notable exception that it had a chain drive instead of the belt.

Post by Red_Wine on 11/10/08 at 06:55:06

Polar-Pilot is right, the 400 cc version was intended for the domestic Japanese market only.  >:(
Some of them were imported into New Zealand, Australia, and Chile in the late 1980's and early to mid- 1990's.   ::) Chilean regulations enacted afterwards prohibited used vehicles from being imported,  >:( and the result was a flood of Korean, Indian and Chinese bikes which are not aging nicely.  :(
Parts for them are also scarce, expensive and not good. Even complete engines are for sale, brand new from the stealerships  :o

Argo:
My 1990 LS400 has a piston 88.0 mm in diameter and 61.0mm in height. I posted a reply from NZ on the other topic I have about this saga.
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1223416096

My suggestion is that you keep an eye on the oil level, check the timing chain regularly (if you blow the top end, you will be in serious trouble), and clean the carburetor and fuel line every six months or so.

You have been riding this beauty already, so I won't tell you how much fun it can be.

Best,

RW

PS. By the way, nice looking lady!!

Thanks for info and advices!
My savage was also imported from Japan to Odessa (Ukraine). There is a shop which trades in the used motorcycles. I  do not even know what year of issue my savage. In documents 2000 is marked year :) but I know that it  is a lie. Simply in Ukraine it is forbidden to bring in the vehicles of transports more senior than 2000 of issue, otherwise there will be enormous taxes. My savage was in the not quite good state. some details of carburetter were rotten (I do not know how to translate the names of details into English, a dictionary is translated by a "float"), old and  very dry overlays. [ch1040] good mechanic did some the work a few days with a savage, then I departed to good master which makes wares out of stainless steel. Now my motorcycle with the arcs of safety. And these arcs already declared oneself from a good side :)
last week purchased the new accumulator of VARTA, old died quite. When tried to lead a motor, black smoke went from a pipe.
In general in winter we will have a lot of work in garage :)

Hello! I have one question. He a bit not on the topic, but possibly you will be able me to help. My friend Irina wants to buy a motorcycle Suzuki SV 650. I know that in America it is purchase cheaper, than in our country. There are some American web sites on the sales of motorcycles? Where it is possible to look prices and order a motorcycle?
