David Steffen 2005 Boulevard LS650:
Best way to allign the drive belt to rear wheel cog pully? Help please.
Notches on rear fork allignment cause belt to ride against
the left hand retainer ring on rear cogpully.
I've owned: BSA Gold Star (2) BSA 441 Victor (1).
My Boulevard gets 62 mpg highway. 50mpg city. Uses no oil.
Muffler baffels removed. Stock carb. Custom solo seat. Windshield.
Fabric saddlebags. Original tires lasted 15K. miles.

Thanks for the great responses:
I measured from rear axle centerline to pivot bolt centerline and made it even. The belt traks against the outer cogpully retainer ring and squeeks. Also ran a stringling down the level road and the bike crabs
to the left. Moved right (muffler side) axle position in one full turn and the rear tire follows the front true. Cog belt still rubs against left retainer ring. Moved bike to block and ran in gear and belt still rubs on retainer ring BUT when I revv up the throttle it moves to the right
and quicly comes back to left when off the pipe. I think this is as good as it gets. Bought some spray belt dressing to help with squeeking.
The big thumper backfires great! Sounds like hell. I love it! I keep the exhaust valves at .05 a bit loose maybe but they shut tight.

You must be a 7' monster. Those seat pads yours too?

And as for the doo rags... cool, open a store in the market.

price? material? been thinking of 'suzukisavage' in a circle and com as a dot in the center. Offer a basic version and put 'er in the store.

My rear pulley was sloppy, so I cut shims from the recently deceased tube, taped them in place, havent ridden yet so no report.
To align the pulleys, I have pulled the front pulley guard, just 8 mm socket, 3 bolts, & used a string, run into the front pulley by setting it on the cogs & rolling the bike , then pulling it back to the rear pulley & sighting down it. The rear pulley gets pulled somewhat wonky on acceleration, so perfect alignment is kinda hard to get, but you can get the wheel, if thats the goal, then some looking for a way to use a string may help you. Ive heard that sometimes the marks on the swingarm arent exactly even & the marks on the tensioners arent either, the little chrome dudes, 12 mm. wrench.

Thanks to everyonw who helped
with rear pully allignment issue.
I've got it alligned as good as it gets.
After reading the chain conversion posts
I've decided to make the change when the
belt wears out. Till then I've a can of spray
belt dressing to combat squeek. I'm no fair weather
rider. I ride rain or shine. Keep the rainsuit and
boots and faceshield in the right saddlebag.
The bike is so light that the slippery streets here in
Orlando are fun after the first few minutes of rain.
My Plexifairing windshield is tops. (Bike Bandit) My
first windshield and I parted ways when a toll-gate
didn't open with my transponder and my speed was
just a bit too fast. Oil on the lane made a straight
thru slide memorable. The windshield and my helmet
made an interesting sound. Don't ever let anyone tell
you plexiglas can't shatter.
Now. About the front break sqeal........

I've been cleaning the belt with a toothbrush and water with a little dishwashing liquid in it, drying it, and spraying suzuki brand silicone lube and that usually works for a couple of weeks.

I did my little cleaning routine today and went for a blast but this time, it didn't work at all. The rear wheel is chirping really loud. I have to look into it not being the belt or allignment, and consider another issue since I've tried almost everything else. It's a 21 year old bike, so it could be anything.

From what I can tell, it's just a bad design.
I think the belt idea is a good one but the frame
is too soft. Harley frames are ridgid as hell so
the belt doesn't wander too much but it does a
little bit.
I'm going to convert to chain drive when the belt
has a bit more wear on it. I'm looking foward
to a reduction in revs. This motor doesn't need to
be running at the high reves to cruise.

Belt squeaks if it's too tight. Throw away the tension gauge (well, put it in the back of the garage..... don't every throw tools away.... 8-) )

Loosen the belt up so that you can turn it 90 degrees by hand.

I had "the squeak" for a few weeks until I found a thread on it. ;)

As for alignment, I tweaked the alignment until it was mostly centered. Took maybe a week or so.
