Title: Front brake squeel
Post by 4carbcorvair on 06/29/08 at 17:07:33

My new 07 S40, front brakes squeel pretty bad when applied. Just turned 200 miles today. Any suggestions?

Normal. The OEM pads squeak like a mouse after cheese.

You have 2 choices. Live with it or swap them for a set of aftermarket ones.

The best of the aftermarket are EBC.  I recently replaced the sinterd (gold) pads with organinc (red pads)  the reds are alot quieter, but do not have the same stopping power that the sintered ones do.

It is a balancing act between quiet operation and stopping power.  You have to compromise somehwere inbetween.

Skrapiron, the question I have is: Will your NEXT set be red or gold?  I need to start thinking about a new set soon too.  Guess I better read up on a new category of Savagery.

You can take off your pads and get a rubber like stuff to put on the backs of them,It will keep them from vibrating   thats what causes the sqeeking, all auto stores have it.

washing with soap and water will eliminate the squeak for a while.
brake dust seems to collect and I think it causes the noise.

sooner or later it will happen with the rear too.

I've never had a disc brake squeal in my LS or SV with OEM or aftermarket pads and I've ridden about 140 000 kms together on these two bikes and I've never used any anti vibration stuff. Do the Savage OEM pads really squeal if the disc's rubbed squeaky clean and pads are not glazed?

I have had about 15 bikes over the last 36 years the only brakes that squeel where the last two. Suzuki 1500 and s40

Thats what i tried for my squallering front brake and it didn't cure the problem. (Spray can)...  Walmart has that stuff cheaper than a parts store btw..
I called Suzuki Dealer and he suggested filing a beveled edge to the leading edges of the pads.. I haven't tried it yet, i'm kinda just living with it. When i have time i'll try it though..
I've tried cleaning the disc with brake cleaner & soap and water and it helps temporarily..
EBC brand brakes squeel too.

Thanks.

I figured the pads are probably metallic pads. They squeel loud, an emarassing loud, not just a light squeak. I'll try cleaning them up, if that doesn't do it, I'll either live with it or change them out.

I took off the stock pads of at 100 miles and replaced with EBC and coated the backs and they haven't sqeek since.

I'm going to stick with the reds.  Ive put nearly 5k on the bike since I installed them in April.  Nary a squeek or squeel.

It doesn't have the grab that the golds do, but I'm not interested in doing nose wheelies any time soon.
