Title: Needed: 3mm washers for the spacer mod
Post by Mr. Hyde on 06/27/08 at 11:02:48

I apologize for posting this but I have been to every hardware store, home renovation outlet and fastener shop in the city (population 125,000) and no one stocks or will order 3mm washers. I want to get the white spacer mod done on my carb and would rather use the washers and keep the spacer in tack.

If anyone has some extra or will sell me a couple and throw them in a mailing envelope I'd be mighty grateful. Thanks.

What are the dim's (OD, ID & thickness) and I'll check on the way home.

According to a graphic of the white spacer someone posted awhile ago, the actually white spacer is .267" or 6.78mm in diameter, .099" or 2.51mm thick and the center whole is .1195" or 3.04mm in diameter.
So I imagine the washer would be 1/4 to 1/3 as thick as some have used 2 or 3 to replace the OEM spacer.

At the suggestion of another thread on here (no, I don't know which one) I used standard 4-40 washers. The white spacer is about three 4-40 washers thick. I removed the spacer and put two 4-40 washers in its place, as a start. The idea was to make a minimal change, and I could always remove another (or both) washers as a next step. It didn't cure the backfire, but it did make my mileage drop from low 50s to high 40s. I put the spacer back, and the mileage went back up to low 50s. I'll live with the backfire.

Do you have an Ace Hardware store near you? If so... Check there. I've been able to locate all of the oddball hardware I've ever needed by going to the local Ace store.

No Ace hardware stores here unfortunately.

Took my spacer out alltogether, works great. I do have 152.5 main jet and a MAC performance exhaust also ;)

Ace was the only place I found that had 3mm washers. Three of the washers equals 2/3's the white spacer, and fit perfectly. There is an Ace in Alexandria Bay, NY (here are the directons: http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=44.231423,-76.481008(Kingston,%20Ontario,%20Canada)&daddr=44.33375,-75.915675(15%20Washington%20St%20Alexandria%20Bay,%20NY%2013607).

Not sure how hard it is to cross the border these days, but that's less than an hour away. You could PM me with your mailing addy, and I'll see about getting some off to you; but Texas to Canada would take a while. Let me know.
Ride safe,
Jay

Your problem got me curious, and I started checking on possibilities for a solution. My search turned up alot of Radio Control Hobby stores. They seem to carry 3mm flat wahsers. In your neck of the woods is a Store called 'Leading Edge". Unfortunately they don't list 3mm flat washers on their website, but they might be worth a call since they are local for you. Failing that, there were numerous websites that DID list 3mm flat washers in their inventory, with mail/online ordering ability. Cheap too. I've included links to some of the sites:

http://www.xlhobby.com/m20/Miniature-Aircraft-USA/p396/0003-Flat-Washer-3mm-(Large)---10-each--Retail-$2.10/product_info.html

http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=300110

http://www.bigrcmodels.com/proddetail.asp?prod=03flatwasher

This may prove to be a better solution to your problem, especially if Leading Edge has them in stock. Their website is:
http://www.leadingedgehobbies.com/oscommerce/catalog/default.php
They list their address as: Leading Edge Hobbies is located at 699 Gardiners Rd. (at the corner of Gardiners Rd. and Progress Ave).

Hope this helps. My offer of PMing me and me getting some off to you still holds if none of this pans out.
Ride safe,
Jay

Jay - I wouldn't have thought to go to a hobby shop. Popped into 'Leading Edge' this morning and they usually carry the washers but were out of stock. Go figure - must be a lot more Savages in the city then I thought.  ;D

They have ordered me a ten pack for a $1 and will give me a call next week when they arrive. Thanks for the heads up, I owe you one.

Hey, glad I could help. Lucky find on my part. I would never of thought about a hobby shop either. Hope the carb work goes smooth.
Note the orientation of that little plate when you remove it, and BE CAREFUL. There's a tiny spring under there that will fly out, and is the devil to find. Don't ask me how I know.
All the best to you.
Ride safe,
Jay
