Title: EXCITED New Owner!
Post by flcruzr on 06/26/08 at 17:56:11

Hello Everyone!  I'm so Excited, I just purchased an 08' Silver S40.  Unfortunately I have to wait till tomorrow morning to pick it up but still very excited.  Any advise for a newbie S40 owner?  Look forward to hanging out on this site and riding my new S40.  ;D

In case you're buying a brand new bike and are totally new to bikes.
Be very carefull leaving the dealership.  Brand new tires are very, very slippery!!  They have a slick coating on them that is used to release them from the tire moulds and you need to wear that of over 10 or 20 miles.
Other than that, welcome!
Be safe...

With any luck at all they already gave you the owner's manual. Browse through that. I don't want to start a war on proper break-in procedures, but the Suzuki manual gives some break-in speeds you aren't supposed to exceed for a while. I think there might be a sticker on the speedometer, too.

Dealerships are not noted for filling the gas tank on new bikes. Your first stop might be a gas station. Make sure you put the fuel selector to ON, not RES or PRI. That way, first time you run out of gas you will have the RES to fall back on.

I hope this doesn't sound like I am "talking down" to you, because it isn't meant that way. The excitement of a new bike makes it easy to overlook some rather pragmatic considerations.

NOT AT ALL!  I appreciate your feedback, Yes, I will note all you have said, I'll be at the dealer early am to get my new bike, the sales manager said it will be gassed up and ready to ride when I arrive so I'll make sure the gas lever is in the ON position and get an owners manual.  The guys at the dealer were very helpful, and I believe they were fair.  I got the bike for $5000 out the door, I was not charged for freight or set up, originally I was but I asked for that to be taken off for an instant purchase and after a few back and forths they gave me this deal.  Looking forward to riding it home! :D

Hi, as further warning about picking up a bike from a dealer... besides watching out for slick new tires; also make sure the tires are properly inflated. Twice in my life I've had dealers send me off their parking lot with deflated rear tires. One actually rolled off the rim as I turned to exit their parking lot! As long as you are kicking the tires, make sure that all the other dealer installed items are on straight and bolted down tight. Just give the whole bike a good looking over and making sure nothing wiggles that shouldn't etc... before you ever move it in the parking lot!

Agree!

I got my bike about 2 weeks ago. My first time out this past Monday, I had a few people pull out in front, not to the point where I had to slam the brakes on, closer than I like. Than the debris in the road. Than people slamming on the brakes and turning with no turn signal. On my first day out, I think I just about experienced every bad thing that could happen.  :o

Not to scare you, take it easy and watch out ahead of you.

Ride Safe. :)

I'll just carry this over from another thread - 'write down all your key codes and put the information somewhere safe'.

Congrats and welcome.

$5,000 out the door? MSRP is only $4,300 according to the Suzuki website...

Sounds a litle awkward... But still, congrats on your purchase! I grabbed a 2007 leftover from my dealer almost 8 weeks ago. It's a blast! :)

Also, according to the Suzuki owners manual, it says to take it easy on the tires for the first 100 miles.

Enjoy! :)

Mine came to just shy of $5,000 ($4,900.20). By the time they ad in sales tax, destination fees, paperwork fees, etc... etc... It doesn't take long to ad up. :(

thats why im a fan of used. $1600 + $140 (Title, reigstration, plates)+ $110 (verslavy) + $25 (oil filter cover...darn that thing) = $1875. It werent pristine but very good condition with less than 10k (which has been far surpassed in the last...idk how long, month or two.) Nothing but smiles since (and a massive scare ridding through a storm last night)

Enjoy your new scoot.

If you want you could take some time getting familiar with it before you ride off into the sunset. As others have noted dealers are notorious for not having everything "just so" before trying to send you out the door. This may also help settle your nerves and get you in the right mindset for your ride.

When doing your walk around be sure to check the oil level. Most MC's don't come filled up from the factory. I can't remember about Savages.

You got a great deal! Good on ya for gettin' the dealer prep, etc. dropped off the price. That's some smooth negotiating.
As for the bike condition off the lot, when you get it home (provided you've the shop manual) go round the bike and check the various nuts, bolts, and screws for proper tightness, referring to the book for proper torgue specs, where applicable. Some of mine were a little loose. Some are meant to be checked with the engine warm, so use your manual. Ride and enjoy!
Ride safe,
Jay

Welcome and enjoy the ride.
If you visit this site regularly, you might get caught up in the modify fever- have a cold one and relax; if it's your first season riding, except for the white spacer mod, spend your resources getting your riding skills up to snuff.  (If you have the shop do the dealer 500 mile check, maybee they'll do the spacer while they are at it, can't hurt to ask).

After a season of riding, you'll be able to more accurrately decide if the s-40 is the bike for you, etc, and then get wild.  Enjoy..

Someone mentioned the slick coating on new tires.

I think I read somewhere its best to get some soapy water and scrub the tires with a brush....and that would take the coating off.

Is that true?

I also heard you have to take it easy more than 20-30 miles.(unless you scrub the coating off)

Not sure if that 's true or not :-/

Anyone know on this?

Oh...Congrats flcruzr! I know you'll enjoy the new bike....just bring it home to rest every once in a while! ;)
