OEM fender doesn't chop to well.  Try finding a seventies jap bike fender or go the tractor route if you like the flat fender look.  Look around for pics, lots of bobbers here.
Mines not a true bobber, more of a scrambler, cause I jacked the suspension up 2" instead of lowering it.

Ok here goes:
Trailer fender(heavy gauge steel)Northern tool pt#1264(I think) will double check.7"wide coveres the 150 good.
Rear tire probably 160.I had a 150 with the belt, but it was getting a little wide for the rim.
Spring seat,3" springs Drag specialties pt#DS902011 2 reqd.
If you get a mount kit The one part bolts right to the original tank/seat mount bolts.pt#DS902014 it's called a universal front seat bracket.
The bracket that bolts to that, the one the seat actually bolts to is pt#DS902013 universal seat bracketwith square end for HD models.
I had to make the bracket to mount the springs to the frame, but it bolts to the spot the fender bolts go through the frame.
I'll get some pics tomorrow just picked up another '87...going bobber ;D

Metzeler's full line PDF lists "measured rim" and "rims permitted"  In 15" ME880 they list as permitted rims:

140/80-15:  2.75-3.75
140/90-15:  2.75-3.75
150/90-15:  3.00-4.25

Our stock rear wheel has a 2.75" rim.  To be within manufacturer's specs if you want a wider tire than a 140/90 you should lace a wider rim onto your hub.

As for the springer seat.  For my rear mount I have a length of 1" x 1/8" bar stock with a bend/twist on the ends to stretch flat between the stock rear seat mounts....

http://paladin.savageriders.com/images/springer11.jpg  http://paladin.savageriders.com/images/springer12.jpg  http://paladin.savageriders.com/images/springer13.jpg
The front mount I'm planning on a bar across the bottom, weld on two four inch risers and a spacer at the top.  This will place the saddle considerably higher and further back than the stock seating position.  Will have to see how it fit me (5'9" 31" inseam) and how it fits Wendy (wife, 6'2" 36" inseam).

May roll the rear mount 90 degrees forward to move rear mount about 1.5" forward/down, and shorten the front mount 1.5" to match.

There is no wrong way to mount a springer saddle.

Sheesh!  Some People!  I even rolled the bike out of the garage to take the pictures.

Hey settle down it was an accident guys, I was modifying the post and I guess somehow I deleted it ?  :-[

But to start over again I'm looking for ideas on trailer fenders (size, where to get), springer seat mounting ideas.

But anyway Demin if you put the kit together I'm in man because the purple bike is sick !!! I thought you bought a Yami 650 to bob ?

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by demin on 06/24/08 at 20:27:01

I did,but I've been trying for a month to buy this Savage on craigslist. The guy finally called me today. So I had to buy it.
When I start on this I'm seriously thinking putting in in the tech section.step by step.

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by strangeling on 06/24/08 at 20:33:11

Thats sounds like a perfect idea man. What do you think the fender/seat/springs and stuff cost altogether ?

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by demin on 06/24/08 at 20:38:46

Fender is around 27 bucks.
Seat 40.
springs 7 bucks ea.
mounting brackets 2 pcs 25 bucks
about 100 + or - with tax.
I did buy a silver 'Flake seat for the purple one 125 bucks, but it didn't go on it. ;)

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by strangeling on 06/24/08 at 20:49:00

Dang thats pretty cheap ! Did you make the hardtail struts yourself ?Thanks for all the info so far guys.

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by Paladin. on 06/24/08 at 20:53:09

My saddle is an Ultima High Noon 13" wide black leather, $49.95 from Jireh Cycles (get the free paper catalog, easier to use than their website)  They have a 5" wide metal flat rear fender for $35.  Don't know if it'll fit, but it's metal and cheap.  They have several pages of various fenders.

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by demin on 06/24/08 at 21:00:05

Yep,the struts are 1" solid round bar with 1/2 or 9/16 holes drilled 9" on center.Solid was probably overkill.

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by strangeling on 06/24/08 at 21:33:28

Demin, if you can confirm exactly which fender you have that would be cool because I'll order one ASAP. Part 1264 says its dimensions are  28 1/2 x 9 inch wide ?

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by punkid33 on 06/25/08 at 05:40:46

Demin, if you can confirm the fender part number that would be awesome.
Also, if you could show some detailed pics of the seat brackets so I can get a good look at whats going on that would be great and much appreciated.

What tail light and turn signals are those and what was the process to get them on the "trailer" fender.  Sorry for all the questions but I am a huge fan of what you did and looking to do the same.

Thanks for the inspiration, my 87' Savage is excited for its transformation as well!

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by wrenchbender on 06/25/08 at 11:15:24

Looks like the Sparto 'Inspired' tailight that many including JIREH sell, painted to match. It's a kool looking light assembly...however the one I had in spite of the actual casting being alloy used plastic for the mounting screw attach and that didn't hold up to vibration or being kicked as well as one would think it should have.

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by demin on 06/25/08 at 13:34:39

Yes,it is a "Sparto"It has 3 bolts. Two that go through the lite, and one from underneath.,the turn signals are from V-Twin pt #33-0629 for single filament bulbs.I'm going probably Friday to Northern Tool to pick up a fender.I will let you know the pt # for sure.
The purple bike is gone,so I don't have anymore pics. But have no fear the new '87 build is starting.

It looks like #1264 and #1267 would work as well. Do you see any reason why they wouldn't? Thanks for the tip, I have been looking around at this for quite awhile.

A couple of the part #'s are 7" wide but they are too small in diameter they are for an 8" tire .The 1264 is 9" wide, too wide for our tire,That's what I have on my Harley with a 200 tire.

Okay, here´s mine. I quess Demin has already seen it on another site.
I did the rear fender by myself. I had a problem finding a fender that fits perfectly with the tire so I decided to do it. The seat is La Pera solo seat. I painted it matt black. It´s gonna have black apehangers, headlight from an old Citroen car http://farm1.static.flickr.com/127/318858250_cef603c921.jpg?v=0 and i´m planning to paint the wheels red. I also wanna change the tank but I haven´t found a bobber-like tank that would fit in it.

I started today on the fender, but it's tooooo hot in the garage.Thermometer said 112.But it was closed up all day too.I did also find a place for round bar,I think.I didn't get a chance to call though.
I think I'm going whitewalls on this build, just can't get a color to jump out at me,I want to do another 'Flake job.The frame is getting painted this time around,it's pretty nicked up.

thats what i decided it took me several tries before i got it the way i like it.  now the springs are in the front.

to mount the fender strutless uses the stock mounting holes  a 5 inch steel barh across the two mounting holes,  in that goes the two bolt that hole the fender set the spacing with nylon spacers.  the sheet metal cover i made for the wiring comes back folds over the back hiding the struts, i also located my fuse box there.

it was just a matter of sitting there figgurine it out,  that one took 5 different ways before i got i hiden, sturdy, safe/

Ok I now have my new solo seat mounted (well at least mocked it up).

I decided to hard mount the seat as it just looked like it sat too high with the springs. So we'll see how she rides with the rigid struts once Denim has made them. If its to rough I guess I might just shorten the shocks.

I also made a metal plate to cover the ugly wiring under the seat.

I actually made the side mount plate myself out of some sheet metal and the tailight was just from a local auto shop. I just traced the shape I wanted onto the sheet metal and used a grinder to cut the shape and then just bent the tab to mount it on the shock. I think total cost was around $20.00. If anyone wants the red tailight I will sell it as I have actually changed the tailight now to this one :

nice work..  you can add the springs to the front of the seat.  the sheetmetal and airbox will support it.

also if you add matching rear pegs it give's you an alternate seating position.  more like a sport bike ride.  i use them alot on long hauls.

while it's a violation in my state, i just love the one mirror look, it says.

i just says DILLIGAF.

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by strangeling on 07/31/08 at 13:25:53

Yeah Sluggo I dig your front spring setup on your seat. We'll see how she rides once I mount the hardtail struts but it probably won't be to much different as I have the springs set at the hardest setting right now.

The one mirror thing is legal here in Utah in fact no turn signals, no helmets, lound pipes are also legal here. But I choose to keep the turn signals as I tried without them and it just seemed like more of a hassle giving hand signals than flicking a switch.

DGAF all the way  ;D

I actually made the side mount plate myself out of some sheet metal and the tailight was just from a local auto shop. I just traced the shape I wanted onto the sheet metal and used a grinder to cut the shape and then just bent the tab to mount it on the shock. I think total cost was around $20.00. If anyone wants the red tailight I will sell it as I have actually changed the tailight now to this one :

Ever thought of making it and sell it in here for profit.I'll send u $50 including tailight for u to make one custom for me.

Blacksheep,

Never really given it any thought before but seriously I'm no professional man but if you really want one I could make one for you but I definately wouldn't charge you $50. PM me and we'll talk some more.
I also have made one previously with just the tag light instead of the tailight.

Where did you acquire this speckled paint? Can local auto paint shops duplicate it? I was thinking of bringing the duplicolor speckled paint and having them color match. You think this would work?

It's called Metalflake. That is also the brand name,it comes in a powder form, and has to be mixed with a clear to spray it.

Ok I received the fender and hardtail struts today from Demin and I gotta say he did a freakin fantastic job on both of them.

Big props to you Demin  :)

Here are a couple of pics with the hardtail struts mounted.
I will post some mock up pics of the fender mounted later tonight.

Also I was messing around with a checkerboard stripe on my tank, so I need opinions - no checkerboard, fat checkerboard or thin checkerboard on the tank (see pics)

Ah, the joys of a 1/2" clearance that only a hardtail setup can bring. Nice work.  THat flat fender is lookin' good.

I'm gonna say pass on the checkerboard entirely. Bob jobs to me mean one of three paint schemes, flat, scalops, or metalflake. But thats just my 2 cents.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks bud!
How's the rigid struts ride anyway with the solo seat w/o the springs?
Mine is coming hopefully this wk!!

Blacksheep,

I've only gone for a quick ride so far but it doesn't feel to much different as I had the shocks set on the stiffest setting anyway, but I do like the way it rides and looks with the rear end dropped a couple of inches.

i'm jealous!!! man i didn't think i would like the struts but they look awsome. now i gotta get me some :'(

Post by strangeling on 08/12/08 at 15:22:11

Ok got the rear fender painted and mounted. Even though I really loved the look of the rigid struts after riding around some more it was just too rough on the roads around here so I have put my shocks back on but I think it still looks ok.

What did you start out with for a rear fender?

I usualy leave the bobber thread alone because as far as I'm conserned there is nothing as ugly as a bobber,it's not a cafe racer,it's not a chopper (also ugly) it's somewhere out there in the twilight zone.
I guess I should keep my mouth shut they are your bikes and you can do what ever the heck you want to do with them.
How about a Cafe Racer? the biggest problem with that is the wheel base ,way to long, any one have an idea if there is another frame that will fit our beast? or visa versa ?

"Ugly" and "Beauty" are such subjective terms mick ... to each his own and all that ... personally I think Bobbers are THE most attractive motorcycles ... they harken back to a time when "cool" was simple and not sophisticated 8-)

Title: Re: Its bobber time !
Post by ratdog472 on 08/14/08 at 10:03:19

I find nothing ugly about a bobber (even the goldwing bobber I saw).  They have a bit more of an outlaw look to them and really do go back to a simpler time where we didn't need all the flashy plastic and overworked metal on bikes.   Back to when bikes were there to ride and not there to be looked at as a trophy.

As far as a cafe out of a Savage?  It's completely the wrong build for it. I mean it could be done but it would look completely wrong.

A cafe from a savage. Not too bad looking but does look a little strange to me.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/dlmj1972/SKRrRz8HzkI/AAAAAAAAEus/kXNfI1_Quzw/s400/Image2.jpeg

I like this one better but it's just a Savage engine in another frame.

Personally I have seen few bobbers that I would consider ugly. But that is just me, I like cafe racers, bobs and oddball customs.

Opinions are like...you know the rest. There are some ugly ones out there, but there is also a difference between a chopper,a bobber, and a rat bike.
Bobber style:

Chopper style:http://a956.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/117/l_9ddd33b77ece57335b5c5a34d849f67b.jpg

Every bike you talk about is a different time/place in history.
Bobbers 40's-50's racers of their day
choppers60's-70's guys saying f u to Hd.
cafe(popular in the UK)60's-70's Race from a cafe
rat bikes 2000's ummm...whatever, making it look old
Each one had it's own significants in time.back in the 40's you couldn't go buy a crotchrocket. So strip down what you had,and go racing.
But,most people don't understand.
I don't think Triumph meant the Bonne' to be a cafe racer either.
Looking to see if someone makes another frame is exactly my point.
If you knew anything about the different styles, you would know, back in the day that's why it was called chopping/bobbing.Because you cut/removed parts, and made stuff fit or made the part by hand you needed.
Kinda what this site is all about in one form or another.

I personally could give a rat's a$$ if you like my bikes or not.I can't
fast enough to sell,so somebody likes'em. build them

I personally like all the looks I've seen for the Savage.  Stock, bobber, chopper, cafe, whatever custom.  I have ideas in mind that I know I'll never get to for full dress tourer and an old style leaf sprung board track racer that I think would look cool too.

Opinions can change too.  But I like knowing we can differ.
Geoff

That would be a cool build. There is another site I'm on called bobbertalk. There is a guy building a boardtracker with a 250cc Virago motor.Hand made frame, gastank, etc. It is really cool.Do it yourself,or find a welder, and slowly build it.If you don't know how, what a way to learn.

Speaking of which....

Demin
What did you come up with for a price on the bobber kit?

Anyone really thinking of tail light options?  I am thinking about either doing a sparto or Model A style.  Not much out there that really trips my trigger in the light department.
Suggestions?
