Title: 08 S40
Post by desert_rider on 06/24/08 at 11:34:50

Just bought an 08 S40 with 185 miles on it.  I put an additional 700 the first week.  I'm just wondering what kind of reaction you guys get around other riders.  I would like to go to some regional bike events, but I'm getting tired of "yes, its a 650".  My boys and I are going to look for a project bike for longer rides, but for right now I'm loving the S40.

I take it that by your name you live in the desert, which one? I live in the New Mexico desert.

As for reactions, I think the funniest one I have gotten was last week when someone asked me if the FireLizard was a Triumph. Of course it don't look like a Savage/S40 any more with the Girder front end and Road King tank.

Clovis NM, other side of the state near the Texas border Hwy 70 runs right through it.

I took my daughter for a ride last friday and stopped to take a break where alot of other bikes where parked (it was bike week last week here in N.H. and there where bikes everywhere). One of the harley guys standing next to his 1800 asked how my 250 does with two people. When I told him it's a 650 he started argueing with me about it. I explained that the 40 in S40 was c.i. and after he thought about it for a while he finally agreed with me. my daughter said she thought I was gonna fight with him. I guess I was getting upset. We had lunch, Rode through three covered bridges and then got caught in a tremendous downpour. Not a bad day.

When I rode my Savage I got nothing but positive comments and questions. Had a lot of people tell me that the way I rode, I would end up with a bigger faster MC and probably not a HD. They made it clear they were commenting about the rider, not the MC. Turns out they were right.

Just tell them it's half of a V-twin. Tell them you get the other half when it's paid for.

Well, I'm now goin' back to the good 'ol "one lung" after selling my S50 V-twin ... prior to that, I Rode a Savage for 5 seasons and it got waaaay more compliments and curious looks and questions than the S50 ... 8-)

That is the wisest statement on this whole forum ;)

(Not that others dont mention it from time to time also!)

Its not about what they think...  Its about having to deal with them.  I've found that most bikers are great, but I've never been to a rally.  That was the main question.

Well my Dad and I both have S40's and we are going to Sturgis with them so if we can live through that then you should be able to go to any meet. We go on Poker runs and charity rides and to bike nights all the time and no one has ever said a degrading thing to us so far. Usually they are really surprised by it. We get asked if its this or that kind of bike all the time, but thats because we have nothing on the bike saying what it is other than whats on the engine. Even the guys at work that have Yamaha R1's and this and that are fine with it. Its about what you like and what you feel comfortable with and make it your own. Being creative is what its all about.

That's the answer I was looking for.  I'm new to this, and I really am not sensitive to what people say.  I just don't want to be unwelcome...  Why waste my time at an event that is elitist when there's plenty of good experiences down the road.

trade it in now if your tired of talking about it.  ;D ;D

actually you will have to add 5 minutes extra at stops just to chat with people about it, as the majority of the converstions will be good ones.  we've talked about the negative comments ad nausem so lets not take this thread there.

when you buy a black one in a field of white sheep, expect to talk about it.

So far I've had one real cutie and several broken down old men comment on the bike.  Every one of them liked it.  She thought it was cooler than "Donny's Magna."  The old guys all reminisce about the bikes they rode years ago.  Given my choice, I'll listen to the oldsters' tales.  Donny is safe.

I've already got a cutie, and the stories are worth a fortune.

I get the feeling that you guys think I was badmouthing the S40.  I wasn't...  I thought I could ask an honest question without feeling bad about it... Guess I was wrong.

Nope, we know what you mean.  In this day and age everyone expects a 1000, 1200 or 1800.  So when you hit them with 650, oh? why so little? and you reply 'when you got talent, you don't need muscle'.   ;D

Title: Re: 08 S40
Post by Jay on 06/24/08 at 20:35:46

I get mostly good comments. The "bad" are usually from folks who don't recognize a 650 when they see one. A 250?! Guess their scale is off from having to stare at the sea of 1000, 1250, 1500, 1800 monstrosities out there. As was said in a previous post, if you buy a black sheep in a ocean of white, expect to have to talk about it.

I'm still waiting for the opportunity to use my favorite answer to the "Is that a single/250cc?" question. "No, it's a v-twin. I not finished overhaulin' the other half." ;)

Ride safe,
Jay

I used to spend summers in Portales, on Gpaws farm. I wonder what its like there now. Used to be a pretty awwright army surplus to walk around in,Went to see War Wagon there & when I went swimming, I stepped off the high dive, wearing some already wet trunks, tied tight at the waist. I was a skinny, I mean, skinny, kid & the legs aired up on the way down & exploded those drawers right off of me when I hit the water...some kinda embarrassing. Makes carrying a smoking muffler home look like a planned outing.

How skinny?I weighed 73 when I was 13. Dont feel sorry for me, I could do 35 pull ups..

P-Tales is allright.  I would suppose not much has changed.  Smells of roasted peanuts most of the time.

Nope, not much has changed in Portales, and it still smells of peanuts most of the time.

With the stock pipe on....   That's a cute bike......    Is that a ATV engine...

With the aftermarket Harley turn-out muffler (Loud & deep)....   Wow, that a big cylinder.......  650 single cylinder?? Do they really make a 650 single????........

I am claiming every mm I can & it says 5' 6" on the drivers license. Maybe I am,,& I weigh just under 140, so me, on Bull, running it down the road, I think we look well proportioned. I get positive response from most people, even HD riders. I guess having a smile on my face & an honest appreciation for the fact that THEY are a rider & THey like their bike, we have an immediate SOMething in common. I like looking at other bikes & I'm a friendly guy & so far, no one has ever just
"shot me down" for riding the one I ride. IF someone ever does, I wont be hurt or angry. I wont be hurt, because the only people who have opinions that matter to me are those whose thinking I RESPECT. I Give those people the power to affect how I feel, to a degree.I wont be angry, just because. Their attitude isnt important enough to allow it to affect my day, not even for a second. I would wonder what kind of person could look at such nice looking little bike &, without knowing how it rides, pulls away, grunts out of turns & feels handling the mean streets, manage to decide it is "Unworthy" of appreciation.. Now, why in the WURld would I care what a person like that thinks?

But, to answer the ?? that started the thread..

Most folks are nice. Most bikers are outgoing, more so than the average Joe or Jane Sixpakk & will treat you & your choice of motorcycle with respect & courtesy. I believe you will be well received & that is always better, even IF you dont care what they think, its better if they think good things.

You need some of these just in case the occasion arises:

"I'm saving up for the second cylinder."  "The other cylinder is in my garage for an overhaul."  (As previously mentioned.)

"One cylinder!"  Look at bike, look close behind cylinder.  "No wonder it's running rough -- it was a twin this morning!  Hey -- has anyone seen a cylinder on the road?  It's mine!"

"The dealer told me 'You got two balls, you get two cylinders', and when I told him about my unfortunate childhood accident, he sold me the single."

"It does double duty as transportation and a prostate massage!"
"It does double duty as transportation and a vibrator!"

I almost always get good response on my bike. If someone is skeptic, just offer them a test drive. :)
I've had a harley guy pulling up next to me and saying that he "wants one of those", since his bike got bad mpg and burned a lot of oil. Then he started to tilt his head looking for the other cylinder... when I told him it's a thumper he got even more interested.  ;D
