Title: Cheap nuts and bolts. Post by Starlifter on 06/21/08 at 16:27:13 Removing the seat, draining the carb, taking the headlamp apart, the bolts and other fasteners strip, and the heads chew up like they are made of balsa wood. I was passing by the stealership today and picked up seven Misc. small fasteners and was charged $11.62 for .40 cents worth of hardware! Oh, and don't get me started on the cheap plastic headlamp bucket, turn signal assemblies, or grip end-caps. If this cheap junk doesn't break while you are using it, it breaks while you are trying to maintain it. Rant over. |
Title: Re: Cheap nuts and bolts. Post by KwakNut on 06/21/08 at 17:39:01 Use eBay. I’ve bought from companies like Mr Fastener in the past, and local fastener suppliers, but the deals on eBay tend to be great. I keep thousands of stainless screws and nuts in my home workshop and always replace standard tinworm-infested items with stainless. Buy in reasonable quantities, and you get good value. |
Title: Re: Cheap nuts and bolts. Post by Todd Perry on 06/21/08 at 18:02:12 Yeah, personally, I use Small Parts (www.smallparts.com) but that's mainly because my work takes me to Miami at least several times a month, so I save shipping by picking up. There's lots of places out there, if you're willing to buy in bag-lot sizes. The way I look at it is that usually, when you buy a screw the first time, as long as you keep a decent list of what you have....you'll probably need one again. Or your buddy will - I can't TELL you the amount of social credit I've gotten by saying "hmmm... I think I got one of those. *rummage rummage rummage* yeah, here you go." |

Title: Re: Cheap nuts and bolts. Post by Cornerstore3000 on 06/21/08 at 18:46:35 When I pull something off this bike, I go to the ACE hardware just down the street and pick out the Stainless right then and there. A little anti seize and the problem is gone forever. |
Title: Re: Cheap nuts and bolts. Post by Jay on 06/21/08 at 22:01:22 Cornerstore3000's right. ACE is the place. I can also sometimes find what I need at Lowe's. Ride safe, Jay |
Title: Re: Cheap nuts and bolts. Post by Mr. Hyde on 06/22/08 at 06:12:39 There are no Ace or Lowes stores here and I can't even find 3mm washers. |
Title: Re: Cheap nuts and bolts. Post by rpgpgmr on 06/22/08 at 09:12:38 Saying that our hardware is cheap, just isn't a strong enough word. Every time I pull something off, I head to Lowes, Home Depot, or a local hardware store to replace it--am heading there in a hour or so as a matter of fact! It's a wonder the things don't literally vibrate apart. |
