Title: changing oil
Post by Keith55 on 06/20/08 at 13:47:02

Ok what kind of tool do I need to get the oil plug out. Again the clymer manual no good.  A 17mm socket won't fit. So I geuss there is a tool that came with the bike, tools that I didn't get with the bike.
Sorry for the stupid question,,,!

The oil plug is either a 17mm or 14mm wrench.

I would reccomend a combo wrench.  Place the box end on the plug.  To remove place the open end as far forward as it will go.  Then push down.  For extra leverage, slip the box end of a bigger wrench over the open end.

The oil filter is underneath a cover secured with socket head hex bolts.

Use a box end or open end wrench that is proper size for the drain plug. The oil filter cover just use the appropriate size allen wrench on the cover and the filter will fall right out into your hands.

Just think though. When you get done with it you will have intimate knowledge of every system and if something goes wrong. "Oh he!!, that's an easy fix, now where did my tools get off to?"

Yes  I didn't look at it that way. Ha!   I can take it all the why down to the tires and frame in a flash now. I have never knew a bike as well as I know this one now. When I got down to change the oil and saw where they put that drain plug I almost lost it though.. Thanks for all the help. I don't think there is a better place than this for any bike. I don't know how well I'll like the Savage yet but I love this forum...
