Title: oil change Post by Keith55 on 06/20/08 at 06:48:17 Hello all. can anyone tell me how much oil to put back in after a oil and filter change? I just got this bike and don't have a manual for it. again the clymer manual that I do have is not very clear on this. Thanks Keith |

Title: Re: oil change Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/20/08 at 07:13:52 The manual calls for 2.1 quarts. Thats 2 quarts, plus 3.2 ounces. I just toss in 2 & ride, top off later. |
Title: Re: oil change Post by T Mack 1 on 06/20/08 at 08:00:26 First time I did the oil change I bought 3 liters of MC oil. Only used a tiny bit of the 3rd ltr. Now only have to buy 2 ltrs and use the open bottle first. The last bottle has left over. I guess there will be a time where I'll need to buy a 3rd bottle but that will be a while. |
Title: Re: oil change Post by newrider55 on 06/20/08 at 08:07:46 The Manual in the tech section says 1.9 US Qt for oil change without filter and 2.5 US Qt with filter change. Are we looking at the same manual? Tony |
Title: Re: oil change Post by 4carbcorvair on 06/20/08 at 08:09:30 My owners manual says 1.9 quarts without filter, 2.1 with filter change. |
Title: Re: oil change Post by Reelthing on 06/20/08 at 08:59:00 drain/change the filter/pour in 2qts/run it to check for any leaks/let it set a couple minutes/get it vertical/check the sight glass - need the oil close to the upper mark/done |
Title: Re: oil change Post by mo.goad on 06/20/08 at 09:30:25 My manual says 1.9 Qt. without Oil Filter change and 2.1 with Filter change but, I bought a used '06 S40 from a dealer and the manual they gave me says "LS650". So I put 2 Qts in with Oil Filter change then run it for a few minutes and let rest for 3 more for oil to rest to bottom as the manual says then to check level, of course you have to level the bike up to see the level. It registered OK but then after a couple days of riding I re-checked it after running it and waiting the 3 min. allotment time to find that I had way too much. Oil totally filled the glass eye!! So I drain the excess and then some as I couldnt get the plug back in time without draining a lot more than needed. My advice is to put 1 Qt. in and a little bit of the 2nd till you get to the "Low" mark of the Glass Eye. Run for a few mins. then let rest for 3 mins. then check ( dont forget to upright the bike which can be a prob for someone who cant do both at same time ) Oil level. If still not somewhat close to the "High" mark on the glass eye, add just a little bit at a time till close or at the mark. And what I mean by a little bit at a time , thats exactly what I mean as the difference between Low and High is I think 0.3 Qt. Hope this helps |
Title: Re: oil change Post by T Mack 1 on 06/20/08 at 09:48:04 Acrtaully I don't go to the detail of measuring. I add the open bottle, then a new bottle, then some of the second new bottle and see where I'm at. Then add tiny bits till I get to the line. Start it and run for little a bit, maybe a minute & shut it down. Wait few minutes (have a beer) then check again and top-off as needed. I say bottle because the MC oil's I have seen are liter bottles which almost same as a quart but not quite. Little more I think. The manual also give liters..... |
Title: Re: oil change Post by verslagen1 on 06/20/08 at 10:07:08 Same here, except my bottle is a gallon jug. And all the bottle/jugs now a days have a clear strip and graduations. Might be as accurate as a shotgun, but it gets the job done. |
Title: Re: oil change Post by Digger on 08/02/08 at 21:18:12 I've yet to find a service manual in over 35 years of wrenchin' that gives an accurate amount of oil needed after a change. My Savage (see my signature) takes exactly 2 quarts to put the oil level midway between the marks on the window. FWIW. |
Title: Re: oil change Post by Jay on 08/03/08 at 18:05:27 When I first got mine, I measured and made sure it was exact. Then I just started putting in 2 qts. at each change. The results were the same. I do change the filter with each oil change. Otherwise, to me, it's like pouring fresh beer in someone else's dirty beer mug. Yuck. |
