how is this best way to go about getting the stock muffler off? can the muffler be got off without takeing the exhaust header loose from the engine? I got all the clamps loose and rear heat shield off, trying not to put alot of pressure on anything,but every thing seems real tite, any help would be appreciated.

There are two bolts that hold the rear of the muffler on as well. It is much easier to just take the two off at the header and foot peg because it has some kind of wrapping inside to keep it from leaking so it is usually STUCK on there pretty well. I used a rubber mallet to knock it off, it took some work but it came off. I hope that helped.

Funny you should ask. I just did this today.  It is possible to take the stock muffler off by itself but it ain't easy.  Mines been on there for 13 years and fought me all the way.  If I was starting from scratch again I would just remove the whole thing but, you know, once you're challenged its hard to back down.

What are you putting on?  I've got a Dyna but didn't get any further than getting a new bolt and lining things up.

Having snapped a header exhaust bolt, I wouldn't necessarily say take it all off.. :)

Id take off the header too, you don't want to mess up the head.

once off, wiggle it back and forth till it comes out.

also nothing wrong with putting some anti-seize on things. That will reduce your changes of stripping or snapping bolts.
