Title: Bike is cutting out.............
Post by EmersonM on 06/17/08 at 10:50:56

The other day, I took my new to me 1996 650 savage for a ride.  This bike had been sitting up for about 2 years before I bought it.  I had the carb cleaned out and refitted with a few new parts that were shot in it.  I sloshed the tank around, and have since run about 3 tanks of gas through it.  The other day when on my ride, I ran it out of gas, and had to switch to the reserve setting.  After I got to a station, and filled up, the bike ran fine for the rest of the ride there, but on the way home, the bike started cutting out on me while on the highway going about 70 mph.  Dying while I was riding it.  I got on it this morning, and the bike runs fine until you get to about 60 to 65 mph, then that is when it starts cutting out and dying, almost like no gas is getting to it.  It only cuts out at high speeds though.  What do you think it is?  Could I have picked up something out of the tank when I ran it so low?

I bought an in-line fuel filter to put on it to see if that will help, or catch any crap and crud that might be in the tank.  At least I can see if there is something in it.  I also planned on draining the bowl today to see if there is anything in there.

Please let me know if you have any suggestins.

Thanks,

Emerson

Check your vacuum line. The FireLizard was doing that exact same thing on me and it ended up being a worn and cracked vac line.

Where does that run to and from?  I did forget to mention that I added a new cone style air filter to the bike, but that has been a tank and a half ago.

Is that the one with the springy wire wrapped around it?

Yes, the vacuum line has wire wrapped around it.  Should be going from the petcock to the other (right) side of the bike.

It looks to be in good shape.

OK, upon further inspection, evidentely the bike shop put the hose on there backwards, causing the oem hose with a fairly sharp turn on it to be on the wrong end, therefore possibly cutting off the air to the other end when it was forced into a right angle?  Evidentely that was teh problem, cause just took it out on the highway, and no cutting out!  Thanks for that tid bit of information!  Only problem now is that it sounds like the tire is leaking after I got back and got it parked, LMAO.  I can't win for loosing!

Well, look at it this way.  If the tire is leaking, but didn't blow out on you and dump you on your noggin at 70 mph, you did win!

It was leaking around the base of the input nozzle where it goes in teh rim.

Hmmm... I wonder how that valve stem attaches to the tube?  It's been so long since I looked at an inner tube.  If it was coming from the base of the stem, I'd be suspicious.  Did you get it stopped somehow?

If you did, then I need to sit up and pay attention.  I might learn something.  I would have thought a leak from inside the wheel meant bad things had happened to my tube, and would have "retired" in despair. :)

After a while the place where the stem meets tube will wear so far that it will leak.

any leak is bad, replace the tube.

been sitting for 2 years?  how do the tires look?  dry?  cracked any?

another thing, if it had been sitting for a long time tires may take a flat spot.  And defects in the tire and I'd replace it as soon as you can.
