Title: S40 ? CANNOT DECIDE - PLEASE HELP
Post by EIGHTWGT on 06/15/08 at 05:14:41

Hey everyone - its my first post... for a reason - I dont have an S40 yet !
Here is my 'problem'. I have a few people telling me I wont like the S40 , and it will over heat easy... which really scares me.  I am 43, 160 lbs and have not rode in 25 years. I had a Honda CB125 that was my transportation for 2-3 years when I lived in Illinois - I now live in Jacksonville, Florida.  I want to ride up and down the coast, and just where I can - and when I saw and sat on the S40 I fell in love with it - but then everyone is trying to talk me out of it and got me looking hard at the Kawasaki 500 LTD..... because it's liquid cooled - its a twin, etc....

HELP ! :-/

I personally have never heard of an S40/Savage "overheating".  I ride around San Antonio.  It's been high 90's here for quite a while, and I ride all the time. All you need to do is make sure you have the correct oil weight.
You will overheat before the bike does!!
I'm 53, 220 pounds (I think).  This was my first bike after a 30 year "lapse of sanity".  I've had it 18 months and put almost 15 thousand miles on it.
Is it the bike for everyone?  Absolutely not.  Read through the messages and see some of the issues.
Is it the bike for me? ABSOLUTELY!

I agree with youz, I was out of biking for over 25 years when I got my 2005 s40. Never had an overheating issue. I've put 12,000 miles on it in two full seasons and i'm looking forward to the next 12,000. I'd put on alot more miles if i lived in a warmer climate. I may look for a larger bike in the future but for now this is the perfect bike for me.

There are WAAAY too many happy S-40 owners( I am one) who would disagree. Its light enough so I can be sloppy at a stop sign & NOt wind up doing the powersplits on the way down. My daughter( 21) rides it easy enough, In fact, when I got mine, I was JUSt starting to get out of the house, after months & years of serious illness, to the point of being unable to even drive a car, But I could handle this little bike..And do the maintenance. It Rips away from stopsigns  (& Some Harleys), if it had more power, all it would do is cost more, use more gas & the power would be For What? Any faster away from the light & I'd be getting a ticket. For the $$$, the power, fuel economy, dependability & looks, the fun I have,, I bought it new, cuz I thought I needed a warranty, But naaaah, If I had found this place first, I woulda shopped for used.
IF you get an S-40 & simply dont like the bike, let me know, Okay? I have been so shocked as that in all my life & I want to see if I could even survive it!!

I hope ya get it, & join in with this bunch. VERY smart , some of these folks, very talented, widely diversified bunch. You can hang out here, even If you dont own one, THATS how mean they are..

Buy it, You'll Liiike it. They pull so sweet coming thru a turn, just a throaty roar, not some Crotch Rocket scream, that makes cops ears perk up. I can rip a turn on this that, If I was having as much fun in a car, I would be in legal trouble. This is fun at much lower speeds & Cheap on gas, I get ( just checked it) 47.5 MPG riding the snot out of it. Siome better riding easy, but 47 MPG,, while giggling? Thats too cool..

Overheating? are you grid locked?
Of course it is air cooled, and you gotta keep movin' to keep it cool or shut down.
I commute daily, jump on the freeway and ride for a half hour.  In the summer it can be 100°+ and when I get off the freeway it is toasty.  But as long as you can keep rollin' it won't over heat.  One route occasionally had a long wait for a left just as I get off the freeway, so instead I turn right and then a left into a residential area and a nice cool down instead of a leg scorching wait.

108'f today in Tucson.  I'm doing 80 miles.  Figure to I'll lose 4 to 6lbs.  The bike will be fine.

A final answer to "overheating" is to switch to a synthetic oil immediately after your break in period is over.  (you must use dino oil to get a proper break in as synthetic will not allow the same amount of wear in to take place).

Synthetic is good to engine temperatures your bike simply can't get up to, so "overheating" becomes a non-issue, even if stalled in traffic for hours on a 100+ day.

=========================

Now for some balance, your other choice is a nice bike too.  It costs more though.   Are you paying for the bike or is someone else footing the bill?  If someone is getting the bike for you -- then show them a SV650 since it is the "same size" as the Savage, it is water cooled and has all them H2O advantages and is still moderately priced.

It is also the bike that your local race clubs (personally owned race bike riders) take to the track on track days and ride during the rest of the week.  Why that one?  Because it wins or places every weekend .....

Eightwt,  I live in Central Texas.  Its hot here in the summer.  11:12 Am and its 96 right now.  I have put over 2000 miles on my S40 since March 29 and its never stopped on me.  Does it get hot?   Yes, but not as wilted as I get.   Tomorrow I am riding with our BACA group.  This means wearing a leather vest to go to support a child.   We will be in court so we have to have a decent appearance.  To look decent, I will ride in one shirt and have another in my saddle bags for court.   The bike will be fine.  Will I?  I am 69 and weigh 195.

Tuesday, I have a 90 mile round trip will wear mesh as I am going on the highway.  I will wet a T shirt to put under the mesh.  The bike will be fine.  I hope I will.

One thing that is so important in hot weather is to check your tire pressure daily.   I have been losing 3-5 pounds every few days because of the heating - cooling cycle.  I checked the valve cores on both tires and they are fine.  Mechanic said its normal for motorcycle tires to lose this amount of air so check your tires daily.

Having supported the S40 so far in this thread, I am wanting to do some long distance touring so I will be trading in the 40 for a C 50T.  However, the S40 has been a great bike for me.

Similar are we.  I also rode a small bike for years, didn't ride for 18 years, started looking for something to be a daily ride.  A Suzuki GZ250 would suffice for what you ask, as it would have sufficed for what I asked.  I also saw and sat on a Savage.  Also love at first sit.   Three and a half years / 19,000 miles later I still love riding it.  It serves as my daily transportation, has taken a couple of 350 mile overnight jaunts in the Mojave under the full moon, has taken me to OKC and back -- first two legs were 1085 miles in 36 hours.  It is the little bike that can.  Were it to die tomorrow I would have a new S40 the day after.

When riding a motorcycle, collision avoidance is a high priority.  To avoid colliding with things you need to know where everything is and going to; which means you have to be observing all around you all the time -- back, sides, a half mile forward.  IF you have to devote attention to operating the motorcycle it takes attention away from observing and avoiding.  Therefore, IMHO, the PRIMARY factor in choosing a motorcycle must be how comfortable you are sitting on it.

Just make sure that your butt and the seat can agree with eachother on those long trips lol
Ok, I haven't rode in 30 years and wanted a bike, I chose the S-40 because of how it felt on me at the Suzuki store..
I've had my 05 S-40 for just over a month now, Longest trip i've been on it was 220 miles on back roads. The bike performed beautifully and flawlessly.
It never came close to acting like it was overheating. The parts dude at Suzuki didn't really recommend the synthetic unless it was a race bike or something like that. For normal driving in the summer to use 20/50 wt. I went with Suzuki OEM 20/50.
The S-40 hauls my 225 pounds around everywhere without thinking twice about it. I love this bike!!!
Mine came with a windscreen and after having it on since day 1 i thought i'd try it without it.. It's quicker without it a little but with it it's a much more enjoyable ride so it's going back on tomorrow..
I have just one concern about it and thats the Interstate @ 70 MPH. It just sounds and feels like i'm working it alot to make it happen and i'm not sure if it's hurting it any to go that fast for 20 or 30 minute runs.. (Anyone ??)
BTW.. We're close in age and lapse in years of riding, So when you get on it the first time, dont treat it like a 125, this bike has torque and will have you saying OHH SH%T if you you crank down on the throttle. Once you get used to the power you're gonna have alot of fun on this bike because i sure do!!! Also you cant beat the price of it, New $4399.!!!

Seems like you can't swing a stick on this forum without hitting someone from Texas, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina...    Surely if there were problems with the bike overheating, at least one of them would have said something by now.  After all, they've been making the exact same bike for 32 or so years.  It must be sorta reliable, or they would have changed it by now.

I love mine.  I'm about 190 pounds and it trucks me all over the place at 70 mph.  With all my junk strapped on, it's probably closer to 210 pounds.

Liquid cooled, twin, all boils down to one thing for a guy like me:  More stuff to go wrong.  This bike is so easy to maintain and repair that even I can do it.  Get it.  You'll love it.

Gotta jump in to.  I ride bumper to bumper in Atlanta heat for up to an hour and a half, 16 miles, and have never had a problem with the bike.  On the other hand I get pretty crispy.

First Id like to say thanks for all the replies - keep them coming...  I was really starting to sway towards the 500 LTD, or even a s50.... but you guys are really turning me back around.... The bike just seems such a logical choice as a 'get back into biking' bike.....
I amglad to hear about all the warm climate riders.......

(the following post is PURE DRIPPING SARCHASM)

No, you'll hate it!

The bike is assembled with bubble-gum and good intentions.  The motor is so anemic you'll have to get off and push it over a curb.  You'll own it for a week and then trade it in on an ElectraGlide.  The bike is garbage!  All of the people here that say they're 'happy' with the S40 are a bunch of deluded wanna-bes.  The bike sucks...

Ok, now that thats out of the way....

Almost everyone I've run into that have run-down my Savage have never sat on one, let alone ridden one.  If you ask a Harley guy, he'll tell you there are no bikes other than Harley.  Ask a Yamaha guy about a V-star and he'll tell you they can ride on water.  Ask any of  them about a Savage and they'll tell you the bike sucks......

If you have a chance, take one for a test ride.  Hopefully, you can find dealers that also sells Yammies and Hondas.  Ride the S40, then ride a VLX 600, then a Shadow 750 and finally the V-Star 650.  Each bike has its strengths and each has its weaknesses.  I settled on the Savage (S40) and haven't looked back since.  I'll be topping 40,000 miles on mine before the end of summer.  Never once had a mechanical failure and never once had any trouble keeping up with bigger bikes.

My wife and I were out yesterday on a short cruise and need to pass a slower vehicle (probably running around 45) ... was running in third or fourth and when I popped open the throttle, plenty of power! The S-40 is certainly not a bad little bike and one you should feel pretty comfortable on after being away from riding for several years. It does have plenty of low-end torque so be aware of that!

Been here in Daytona for three years and ride in 95+ heat during the summer with no problems. A rejet and carb tune up helps a lot keeping the engine cool beside that the big single is a tough bike.

Sorry I did go back and read the first posts.

I know when I bought my Savage alot of people tried to talk me into a bigger bike....but my conclusion was, after listening to all their comments ....most just didnt like the one cyclinder!! And not that there was a problem with the one clyinder! ;)

Some even tried to talk me into a smaller 2 cyclinder. ;)

That's my experience, but I havent had any problem with the Savage,at all. And,its HOT here ;)

Were'nt originally all or most bikes a one cylinder? :-/ For a long time?

Free Spirit, we already covered that.  Remember?  You were supposed to soak a do-rag in water and then ride around in a thong to see if it kept you cool.  You promised the group that you would run the experiment and then post pictures documenting your conclusions.  :P

Staying cool? For a little while, its easy. I spray myself down with the hose before I ride away. The Tee shirt, under the long sleeve is well wetted, the outter shirt, too.I have a pump up spray bottle, with a Mister Nozzle I drilled out, so it squirts more, so I can rewet at a light. Its strapped to the right shock, I should move it to the left, so it wouldnt get the water so hot. I wet it, too, so the ride cools it, but its so close to the muffler, its hot anyway. But, hot water cools off as soon as I ride away from the stop.

I've put quite a few thousand miles on both a Savage and an LTD500 (Vulcan). There's a whole lot of difference between the two, but your concerns (and your buddies comments) about the Savage overheating are unfounded.

My first bike is my 2007 S40 that I picked up about... 7 weeks ago. It's been a blast driving it and I'm glad I went with this bike.

It's short (perfect for me at 5'6"), it's light, and it's got a good bit of power, certainly enough for me and my jaunts around town.

Another big seller? The price tag...

I'm 45 and 171 lbs. I just did 125 miles (much of it at 70-75 MPH) on my 98 Savage yesterday in 101° F heat without a problem.  I did the same thing at 230 lbs in 105° F heat without a problem.  I use full synthetic oil to hedge my bets but that's about it so far as cooling is concerned.

As you've heard, the S40/Savage is a great "little" bike.

One thing about about it that I want to emphasize is the easy maintenance and simplicity it has.  I have a Honda Shadow 1100 as well as a Savage.  Doing any work on the Shadow is almost an impossibility, it's too complex for me.  The Savage I done ALL the work on myself with ease (and fun), and I have never taken it to the shop.  Let me just say that I am NOT a mechanic!  But I have found the Savage an easy bike to work on and modify as I want to.  It's given me confidence to know that I'm not dependent on a shop to change my oil or change my brake pads.  I've worked on the carb, drained and replaced the fork oil, did the chain conversion, replaced clutch springs, and am now in the middle of a total change in the look, all by myself.  I know everything about the little bike and it has become a real "friend" to me.  Sure, I like riding my Shadow 1100, but if I had to get rid of one of my bikes, it would not be the my Savage that would go.   ;)

I too had a long lay off from riding - 40 years.

I bought my 2006 S40 in April, and have only put 500 miles on it.

As for comfort issues - it's fine for me at 5'11" and 190 pounds.

This past Sat., a local HD dealership had what they call "Demo Ride Day", when the factory brings a dozen bikes of all HD sizes, and you sign up for a nice 15 minute ride, all in caravan.

My buddy went with me - he rode his Ducatti and I rode my S40 to the Harley dealership.  We signed up for two demo rides.

First, I had a 1200 Custom Sportster and for the second ride, I had a Dyna Low Rider.

Both were horrible.  Terribly uncomfortable seats, the family jewels were against the gas tank on the Sportster.

The Low Rider vibrated so badly in the foot pegs, and to downshift it I had to take my foot off of the peg and heave down on the shifter like I was crushing a beer can.  Clunk, clunk, went each gear.

Sure, the power of both of them was nice, but that was all.

I'll take my little S40's comfort level any day over those Harleys.

I can't speak to overheating - I haven't experienced any, but in 500 miles, that's not much experience.

The other great thing about the Savage is this forum. Just in case you haven't noticed these people here know their stuff. I trust their knowledge over and above my (old) mechanic.

I've been reading old posts just to get up to speed and have been stunned by the help these people are willing to give. You can't say that just anywhere.

I don't really stay cool unless I'm moving, I wear a mesh jacket, not leather in the summer. Beside that I just sweat and drink a lot of water which reminds me that I might wash my jacket this year. The hear is not that bad unless you get caught in traffic.

This looks like a good spot.

Hi y'all.

I have many of the same questions about this bike as I see answered here. They are the most popular questions asked about the S40 and certainly are the ones most on my mind. Great thread.

It's good to see so many Texas riders. That's where I'll be riding.

The main purpose of me getting a bike is to use as a commuter that gets better than the 22mpg I get now in a truck. My commute is 60 miles round trip, mostly interstate, 60-70 mph. I cross the DFW on 820, 183 and 30. Think the S40 is up to it?

Given it were well maintained (and that doesn't mean rebuilt every other month) and driven as this type of commuter, how many miles are these bikes good for?

Thanks.

It'll handle commuting no problem.  Depending on how steady that speed is, you should get 50-60 mpg.

50 weeks/year, 5 days/week, 60 mile/day = 15,000 miles/year.  At $4/gallon = $2,727 at 22 mpg versus $1,200 at 50 mpg.

If I were to be doing a 60 mile city freeway commute I'd be looking at the 250 Ninja, assuming I didn't think it was fugly.  The super scooters are also an option, especially if you get dressed up for work.  But not much can touch the Savage when it comes to fun factor, and that big upright single is a great ice breaker/conversation starter.

I bought a brand new Savage in August 2003 ... last Oct. I sold it and bought an '06 S50 ... fine Bike too ... went like stink, had 2 cylinders and it looked real good ... but I wasn't happy ... I missed my LS650 the minute it's new owner rolled out of my driveway with it and I never stopped missing it ... so 2 weeks ago I sold the S50 and I am picking up an '05 S40 on Saturday and will have to Ride it 350mi to get it home! I can't wait!!!

Oh, and how is it riding 2-up if we each weigh about 200 pounds? What's the max weight limit? It's not on the OEM site.

I've been wondering about that myself. The 2002 Owner's manual I found online says GVWR for that year was 785 pounds. Unfortunately, the weight of the cycle is 352 pounds, and I'm assuming that's "dry" (i.e. with an empty tank). It's got a 2.8 gallon tank, and a gallon of gas weighs about 6.5 pounds.

Sooo....

785-352-(6.5x2.8)= 414.8 pounds available for passengers and accessories (which includes things like bags, etc.)

(am I forgetting anything, guys?)

So you should be ok, but pack light ;)

EIGHTWGT, I live just about half an hour north of you in kingsland, GA and I've been riding my s40 around, mostly to and from work and I haven't had any overheating problems.

I also live in Jacksonville and ride my 05 s40 all over town and have never had a heating problem. I am about 260 lbs and this bike zips me all over with no problems, completlely stock, no mods. IF you want to see or ride mine, send an email.
