Title: Price of a 2000 Savage...
Post by Bleemus on 06/14/08 at 11:21:17

Local 68 yr old lady has a 2000 Savage in her driveway with a For Sale sign on it. It is the green one with only 1200 miles on it. She said she bought it for her 60th birthday and just doesn't ride it enough.  Aftermarket windshield is cracked which she said happened when it fell over in the garage and hit the wall.

Checking KellyBlueBook.com they say it is avg retail of $2175 assuming 11k on the engine.

She is asking $3200 which seems a bit steep to me despite this bike being in great shape. I thought I saw where people bought brand new ones for $3900.

Can anyone tell me what the ballpark for this bike would be so I can negotiate in good faith?

Cheers,
Bleemus

I'd start with Blue book and work my way down.
cracked windshield isn't worth anything unless you can repair it.
low mileage is as bad as high, as you might need to work on it to get it running right, or is an indication that it isn't right.

And do some haggleing ;) Or take a good haggler with you!

That price seems too high to me!

Thanks all for your help. I just went by and they were not home. I think they listed it at that price because it is $100 more than one on Craigslist with 18k miles. They just don't realize how overpriced that one is and figured that hers, with so few miles, had to be worth more.

Hoping to be a Savage owner by tomorrow night!

I just bought one off craigslist with 1800 miles for $1800 and mines a 2001 so yes that is a bit much, or I just have a silver tongue.

I may have just gotten really lucky...or really unlucky...but I bought one just 2 hours ago with 1K miles, sitting in a garage, will need a battery and the pet thingy was left to "prime" so gas has probably flowed through the carb and it has leaked out the side...for the modest sum of $1,000.

I'm psyched, but hopefully not prematurely.  We didn't get to start it up, so we're taking a chance.  Theres a good chance I just walked in to a fantastic deal.  The seller is a girl, who lives with a girl I work with.  I'm sure she's not trying to hide any problems with the bike.  She just didn't know how to store it properly and isn't interested in riding it.

I looked at the Kelly blue book trade in value=$1,500 and retail is about $2175.

By the way, I'm new here, so "Good to meet you all!"  :)

"Thingy?"  Ugggh.  What's wrong with thingy!?  :P

I paid $2200 for a 2003 with 1800 miles on it a year ago - and that was from a dealer.

I have noticed that used motorcycles have gone up in price since fuel prices have gone up.  Since the LS650 is quite a nice commuter / around town gas saver, I'd imagine they would be worth a little more than they would be if gasoline was cheaper.  Still, that seems high to me - even if it was perfect.

Great feedback from all. Thanks. I may have a hard time educating the owner on the proper pricing of this bike. I would pay $2200 just to get it done but feel that we are so far apart on price that it may not happen.

In my search for a bike one of the prime criteria was a supportive forum where I could ask silly questions and learn a ton about fixing the bike. This forum and the f650.com forum are the two best I have found so I have narrowed my choices to these bikes. Thanks to all for your help and I hope to be a Savage owner soon!

For comparisons sake, I bought a 2000 Savage with 6k mi.  for only 1850.  Probably in similar shape as yours.  That was the asking price, and so I didn't feel like haggling with the guy over the price.  I felt it was fair.  This was in the Chicago area just last month.  Again, just for comparisons sake.

If you're not in a tremendous hurry and you want that bike, go and make her a fair offer and leave her with your telephone number.  I doubt she will sell it at that price (unless a very naive person comes along) and her education about market value will come soon enough (as she stares at the bike every day in her garage or driveway).

Good advice. As soon as I  see they are back home I plan on knocking on the door. I have printed  replies from here as well as Kelly data to leave with her. Hopefully she sees the light.

Everyone puts a high price on there stuff because they know people with talk them down you shouldn't have a problem offering here what you want to pay, if its reasonable she'll take it.

And she could very well be thinking....high gas prices, more people riding= more money for motorcycles now.

Did someone already mention this? :-/

But,if people are going to ride MC's due to high gas prices, they probably will still shop for the best deal.

So,you shouldnt have a problem,at least not a big one :)

But,you can always shop around for even a better deal.Or..IF,that one should fall through.
I used CycleTrader, online classified ,etc....I shopped about a month or 6 weeks to get what I wanted and felt that it was the best or at least a good deal.
(and a awesome color also-custom painted pearl white + a special thing painted on the tank...I liked it ...felt, this is it! ;)

Just a thought! But/and...I was new to shopping for a MC and new to riding one,(doing all this mostly on my own)....had always been a passenger before.

You may have much more experience than I had!

Take a piece of paper, write down your name and number.

Put down your cash offer and hand it to her and leave.

In a few months maybe she'll come to her senses and give you a call.

Some people you just can't rush, especially when they've made up their mind.  Tell her to call a dealer and ask if they got a new c50 and how much would her s40 be worth in trade.  Make sure she's sitting down.   :o

I paid $2500 for my 04 with 600 miles.  That was with leatherlyke bags.

Maybe print out this thread and show it to the seller.

Just FYI, I saw a low mileage 96 on craigslist at $1000,  today I saw the guy had relisted it at $1300 couse so many people offered that sight unseen!  Stupid him for not checking pricies better, and tacky for raising the $ once he figured it out.

In my area (Mass) every $400 bike is selling for $800 or more.  Unbelieveable.  Watch Craigslist.  Another s40 will come along.

In the meantime, I agree with the poster that suggested handing her a paper with your name, number and cash offer.

The bike is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it... I'm sure that SOMEONE is willing to pay that for her bike (that doesn't mean they wouldn't be dumb, but... Yanno)...

I agree with the above. Just give her a cash offer and that's all you can do... If not, you'll find another.

I bought a 2002 for $1700 w/9500 miles on it  w/sb & windshield & new tires.  The seller was asking $2300.  The bike had been dropped in his drive and had a cracked front right turn signal.  Replaced for $5.

I bought my 2000 from a pawn shop for 1200.00 with just over 12000 miles on it.

I bought my 97 for $1800 w/ 5600 mi. Windshield/bags and factory backrest as extras. M40 grabrails installed. I got it off Craigslist, but think it would have gotten about 22 on fleabay.

Now that I am armed with enough info to negotiate the owners seem to be out of town. Nobody home day or night but when I knock I hear a dog barking so they must have a pet sitter. I will keep trying and hope to get this Savage in MY garage soon. I know one of their neighbors and will ask them tomorrow if they know what is up. Fingers crossed.

Great forum here as I really appreciate everyone chiming in with their pricing. A rare bunch you all are and I toast you all!
