Title: What does this go to??
Post by meck on 06/09/08 at 15:47:12

I had dropped the speedo washer while putting the cable back on, so I went fishing for it with my magnetic pickup jobber... and up came this:

It is about 14mm OD and kind of rubbery-coated. I pulled it up from the well by the starter.

That is the seal for the speedo cable.Goes between cable, and engine.U side toward the engine.

Wow... I guess it must have fallen out of the cable when I took it off in the first place. There actually was another thin metal washer in the speedo cable, so I thought that was the one I was supposed to hang on to. I will get that metal washer out of there and put this one back in.

Thanks!

I could have made a thousand of those out of the electrical tape I've used to keep track of the one I have.

The first time I took my tank off, I had already read about the vanishing seal, so I very carefully put a baggy over the end of the cable and taped it on. The seal was still there when I removed the bag, but that pesky seal vanished into thin air by the time that I got all the pieces together and connected to the transmission.  >:(

I went down to the local hardware store and got an o-ring just big enough to hang up on the inside of the threaded housing. It works, and will probably stay in the next time that I have to remove the speedometer cable.
