Title: heat sink under the passenger seatpad?
Post by Seth on 06/09/08 at 15:04:39

I was looking at the fender, under the rear seatpad, and noticed what appears to be a heat sink of some sort there...I didn't have time to take everything off and try to identify it, but can anyone tell me what that goes to?  I was going to put my saddlebags on the bike, they're the laceup style, but I don't want to do that if they're going to be cutting off all air to that heatsink, if that's what it is.

That little heat sink is the rectifier.
If it's in your way there are several places you can move it.
Doesn't need much airflow if it's working right, and it is buried under the seat.  It's also got the fender as an additional heat sink.

I tried to remove the rectifier when we had the fender repainted on our '86 and that sucker was screwed down tight.  After seeing how expensive they are to replace I didn't want to take a chance messing it up and just left it on.  The shop taped it off real good during the paint job and everything turned out nice.  I now have an impact driver and maybe that would help, but penetrating oil and a screwdriver wouldn't budge it.
