Title: chain conversion revisited
Post by rigidchop on 06/06/08 at 18:57:55

got my new sprocket yesterday and promptly installed it. ended up with a 16 front 43 rear. still has plenty of take off power, and at an indicated 70 mph seemed like it was running a little easier. can anyone tell me the reduction percentage with this combo? all in all i like it so far. planning a trip to NC later in the month and hope to be riding the savage. we shall see.

I think there's a chart in the tech section on it

found ... so if you calc you ratio at a bit under 10% - looks to me like 70mph is really 77mph - but you likely need a gps to be sure as some of these bike speedos seem to over estimate the speed about 10% - heck you might be right on now

that was me. originally i went with a 16/45 combo. the 16/43 works much better.

How many links in chain for the 16 43 combo?
I am guessing 108 links?

That's the one I am considering as I calculate that it's 10% longer which makes it easy to calc your road speed compared to speedo reading.
Also consider milage covered for service and oil change will be out compared to odometer by 10%.

i originally bought a 120 link chain, i didnt count how many i took out. and if i change my oil around 2000 miles it really wont matter if its exact, as i'm using synthetic.

did a little road testing today, and the speedo is indeed off, anything up to around 20 mph is ok, then as speed increases the error margin gets larger. so at 40 mph i'm doing 43, and at 65 i'm doing 70, of course i tested this with my new GPS.

Thats 7.5% at 40 & 7.69% error at65( speedo reading).
I wish I had more samples, to see how the speedo error varied thru the different speeds.
HEY! Thats a great reason to go ride... hint, hint

not gonna happen today buddy 8-) but as i plan on commuting more, i was planning on taking the gps with me, but the one i have isnt really designed for mc travel, so i'm gonna trade it in on a better one.
