Title: her gas mileage sucks
Post by smitty58 on 06/04/08 at 08:49:34

the wifes 2001 savage, gas mileage sucks. she gets 35 mpg. the bike runs excellent, but shouldn't she get better mpg  than that?  should I decrease the main jet

cone air filter
#55 Slow jet,
#157.5 main jet,
drag pipe
white spacer mod

thanks

Gas mileage that low seems pretty bad.  I run a  #150/#50 w/2/3 spacer and get 60mpg.  I am at 2500ft elevation, if you're lower than that you need to be richer than me, but maybe not so rich as you are now.  Try a #152.5/ #50.  The pilot will affect cruising mileage most.

Suggest to her that she stops riding at 80+ mph WOT

Also check the brakes to make sure they are not rubbing.

The white washer is what your riding on most of the time is yours out or just cut down.

Older bike, right?  What size is the rear tire?  If my summation is correct, she's running a 140/90-15 on the back, right?

More supposition:  She rides entirely around town, doesn't she?  All stop-and-go traffic?

Conclusion, she's getting exactly the mileage she should be getting.

Here's why:

With the larger than stock rear tire, the accuracy of the speedometer has been thrown off even more than stock (where it can be as much as 10% off to begin with!).  The odometer is affected by the larger tire as well.  When the speedo indicates 45mph, the bike can be running as fast as 55mph.  That means your wife is riding faster and further than she thinks she is.

Stock, the bike will turn in 45-50 mpg in all city driving. With the spacer mod, the large (157.5 is huge!) main jet, cone filter and the drag pipe, it stands to reason that the bike is going to drop well below stock mpg.

If I'm right, the bike is running just how it should given the setup.....

I would agree the big jet is probably most of it, but...

would not be true on my wife's bike at least.  Her speedo says she's going about 7% faster than she actually is, so a bigger tire would make it more accurate.  From what I know about metric bikes, it's more common for their speedos to read high, not low.  Oddly, HD speedos are normally right on.

bike is 2001 with 4500 miles

the mileage is pretty accurate  because I put one of those bike computers on for the trip meter it is probably more accurate than the the stock speedo

I am trying to see if Lancer has any more Jet kits
thanks
