Title: Your favorite mod.
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/31/08 at 07:26:41

Not just for performance, but what have you done that made working on, riding  or looking at, your bike better for you? If you were just getting your bike, whats the first thing you would do, to make it more "user friendly"?

As often as the seat has to come off, the first thing I would have done would have been the Long Allen heads with the jam nuts. Whoever thought that one up was on the ball. That, & the plug door.

I will hijack my own thread for a sec. Last night ( after topping the oil) I grabbed my washer, cut to fit the slot & mounted on a bolt, & twisted on the timing plug. NO Sweat, came right off, even tho I added a bit of grunt after it bottomed out when I put it in last. Looing at it, I could see I had used antisieze, so I doctored it again & slapped it in. Antisieze, a Must Have.

My seat.  Definitely my seat.  Or my trip meter.  Or the XM radio.  Maybe the brighter headlight...    Nope, it's the seat.

I'm not tracking on that washer setup.  Sounds like just what I need though.  Gotta pic?

Hijackers work better in pairs, don't they?

Favourite mod?  Progressive rear shocks. (made all the difference in the world!)

Most effective mod?  Removing the white spacer and tuning the carb.

Most difficult mod?  Installing the sportster pipe.  (wasn't hard at all, but was the hardest thing I did.)

Changing the handle bars and risers to fit me has to rank number 1 according to the definition of this thread.
#2 would be the speed pins holding my sportster seat on.
#3 is my verslavy.
#4 is going tubeless.

Progressive shocks, here in the north where the ground freezes the roads can get pretty rough,I couldn't have road this bike with the stock shocks.

1) Lifting the front of the seat for butt comfort
2) Changing the handle bars from the stock buckhorns to lower and  flatter
3) Rejet and white spacer mod

Five words that thrill:

I needed transportation, the deal to get my retired company van fell thru, the wife asked, "Have you considered a motorcycle"

My bike is my primary transportation, it takes me to work, takes me shopping, etc..  I need sufficient lockable storage.  The first thing I got for the bike were my Leatherlyke saddle bags.  Love 'em.

The washer to pull & install the timing plug.
I had a bolt( 5/16thish) with an upset at the end of about 1/2 inch of threads, (but 2 nuts jammed would do it). I found a washer, about 2 inches across, about 1/8th thick , as thick as you can find & still fit in the slot is what ya want. Before mounting the washer on the bolt, tho, fit it to the slot. Cut it almost flat across one side, so that it fills the length of the slot & the contour allows it to go to the bottom of the slot. Then, I used a smaller washer to support the main washer. It goes out almost to the edge & is cut to almost be touching the plug when the main wsher is in the slot. So, what ya have is, a couple of washers, with a bolt going thru & nuts on each side of the washers, to keep them on the bolt. My bolt is about 4". So far, I havent had to crank on it hard enough to bend the washe. I bet I never do. I wouldntr be afraid to just use the one heavy washer. IIRC, the reason the second washer is there is because the upset on the bolt & that washer were made for each other, so using it was kinf of a Have To deal.

I hope that wasnt too spastic an explanation, Sandy. If so, let me know..Ill try again

Think I got it.  I was picturing a washer welded to the end of the bolt, with a ratchet to turn the whole works.  I'm not much of a welder.  What you are describing is much more my speed.  Just spastic enough to come down to my level.

Thanks.

1: Right now,  the 30" fishtail pipe and wrapped exhaust header. I can't stop looking at it. And the sound. Wicked Pissah!
2: O-ring grips and pegs and on highway bar.
3: Started working on jet kit and spacer mod today, not finished yet, but hopefully another great mod.

I'm starting to enjoy tweeking on the bike much more than I thought I would.  :D

* The stock seat exchange to gel, a small riser, and with a new sheepskin pad now!  :)

* The saddlebags. Although not what I ultimately want, they are used daily, so I am good for now.  BTW - I have stuck my ballet tutu in the saddlebag, so my next set has to be able to fit that too!

* The elkhide hand grips - warmer than the stock in winter, cool in summer, and just enough bigger in diameter to be more comfortable. Hmmm...Sluggo, dont say a word about this text!! :o

I've gotta admit, I'm not much for mods to the bike, but I did mount a garage door opener to the handle bars.  Does that count?   ;D
And I got some aftermarket foot pegs.  They were for a harley, but I took them to my brother's machine shop and drilled out the male mounts to fit a metric.  For $20 they fit way better than the $200 Kuryakyns that were on it when I bought it.

I think the next mod I will do will be to slot the oil drain plug so I can drizzle oil out easily when I overfill. My measuring cup, which is a plastic mixing funnel, is OFF. I did a pint, 4 times & it was over by several ounces.

OHH, yea, I like the rear brake mod, Big Time. I can romp on it pretty good before it locks.

Whadja do to your rear brake?

Title: Re: Your favorite mod.
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/01/08 at 20:10:29

Used an angle grinder & cut 4 slots across each shoe, & tapered the leading edge, eliminating near 1/2 of the shoe/drum contact area. I also adjusted the pedal so it was a bit of a push before it would grab all the way, so the first "Thought" about slowing down doesnt make the rear tire slide.

Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 06/01/08 at 20:25:27

Oh.  I see.  I hadn't heard about that one, but so far I haven't had any trouble with the brakes.  Other than the hideous screech from the front one.  It works better than the horn for gettng attention.

Title: Re: Your favorite mod.
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/01/08 at 20:41:37

As far as I know, I am the only one who has done it. I kept locking the rear & decided I needed to do something.

If I had to pick just one, it would be the JC Whitney trunk.

I don't own a cage, so my Savage is my daily driver.

It's amazing what you can carry with a trunk and some mailing tape to strap stuff to the back seat.

My saddlebags are an accessory, not a mod.  My big mods are the 7: headlight and the springer saddle.  While the headlight looks good and improved lighting, the saddle had improved comfort considerably and has to rate as the best mod I have done.

Tough question. I would go with the larger tires. Major difference whether on the freeway rain grooves or the urban jungle. Still working to make extension tabs to get the front fender back on. Time has been the obstacle.

Second would be the Dyna muff and carb rejet-what a difference!3

Third would be the Progressive shocks.

Post by Oldfeller on 08/09/08 at 04:07:07

Larger tires help with rain grooves.  IRC tires are miserable on rain grooves and seams in concrete roads -- any wider better tire will improve on these points.

Post by Oldfeller on 08/09/08 at 04:24:34

Mounting a set of saddle bags.

Brighter headlight.

Bigger rear tire.

Better front tire (BMW touring style).

Better front brake pads (no squeal).

Title: Re: Your favorite mod.
Post by Oldfeller on 08/09/08 at 05:47:24

Justin brings up a point about our rear brakes -- they can exceed the grip capacity of the rear tires if suddenly actuated.

But this is common to every bike I have ever ridden.  Our rear brake can be gently applied or moderately applied or stomped violently and you get the response you expected to get from the input you gave it.

If you have to intentionally neuter your rear brake to keep from killing yourself, I would expect that you lived up in the mountains somewhere.

Our rear brakes ARE dangerous up in the mountains, as are our flat lander rear braking habits.
